✧Not Another Loss✧
Chapter 14- ✧Not Another Loss✧
“Please, Derek, please get me out of here,” I begged through my pounding headache. I felt like anxiety was crushing my lungs and I knew I just had to get out of this school. It was a reminder that I was stuck being useless while everyone else was out doing something to save lives. And worst of all, they were all in danger. I could lose any my friends at any moment and there is absolutely nothing I can do about it.
Derek nodded slowly as he wrapped an arm around my still shaking body and led me out of the school as Malia tailed behind us. Derek quickly and silently packed me into the car as he and Malia climbed into the front seats.
“Do you want me to take you back home?” Derek asked as he began to pull out of the school’s parking lot.
“No,” I said quickly, causing a stunned Derek Hale to look back at me through the rear view mirror. “I-I don’t want to just sit around worrying. Can you take me to like the animal clinic?”
Derek nodded and turned in the direction of the animal clinic. On the way there he told me about how he and Malia were going to try to track down the rest of Brett’s pack, not that I really cared but I think he was just trying to get my mind off of everything else. I appreciated his attempt even though it wasn’t working to well.
“I’ll tell Scott you’re here,” Derek offered and I simply nodded my head before hopping out of the car. Derek and Malia then sped away as I walking into the animal clinic, causing the bells on the door to chime.
“Charlotte,” Deaton looked surprised once he came out and saw me standing in the waiting area of the clinic, “Is there something I can help you with?”
“I-I don’t’ know,” I admitted as tears began to resurface all over again as I plopped down in one of the empty chairs, “I don’t even know why I’m here.”
Deaton came over to me and knelt in front of me, “Why don’t you tell me what’s wrong.”
I shrugged my shoulders as I rubbed some tears away. “I’m so useless.”
“Charlotte I feel like you don’t remember the first time we met,” Deaton said and I looked up at him, not entirely sure what the subject had to do with anything. Deaton smiled, knowing he had caught my attention, “The first time you came here was for your brother when we were trying to get back the memories that the alpha’s had taken. You made sure that you were there for Isaac and that he didn’t get hurt when we put him under. You don’t realize it but you’re a strong young girl.”
I shook my head. “That’s different, the reason I was there was because I was scared of losing Isaac, not because I was strong.”
“Well what are you scared of this time?” Deaton asked softly.
“I’m scared of losing Liam,” I admitted. I haven’t known Liam for that long and yet I was just so terrified of even the thought of losing him. I hadn’t realized how much he meant to me or how much he has helped me until now. And I just can’t lose him.
I can’t lose him because I like him.
Since Mason had made me realize that I did indeed feel something towards the lacrosse player, I tried to push the thoughts away and deny it. That obviously hadn’t worked. I’d fallen way harder for Liam then I had even thought possible and of course I had to realize that in a moment like this.
“And you think you’re here because you think can’t help him?” Deaton clarified. I simply nodded my head in response. “I don’t think that’s quite it. I think you want to do something, maybe you want to help me.”
“With what?” I asked seeing as Deaton seemed to have known all the answers.
“Well for starters I could use help with Brett,” Deaton stood up and led me to the back room where Brett was still passed out.
“What can I do?” I asked; eager to do anything useful. I watched as Deaton went to get a wash cloth and got it wet before ringing it out.
“Put this on his forehead for now,” Deaton instructed, “I’d imagine he’ll be waking up soon too.”
I nodded and gingerly put the wash cloth on the unconscious boy’s forehead. Deaton nodded to show I was doing everything correctly.
“Good, now can you stay with him until he wakes up?” Deaton asked which caused me to quickly nod. “Alright, I’ll be back to check on you in a little while.”
I didn’t argue with the veterinarian as he left me with Brett. Every so often I would pat at his face and I was just beyond glad to be able to do something useful. Sure, it may not be lifesaving but it was still something.
It probably was at least an hour of me holding the wash cloth and struggling with myself not to look down at Brett’s bare chest before he finally sat up straight with his eyes wide.
“Where am I? What’s going on?” He asked as his attention turned to me. “You’re the girl, the one that came into the locker rooms and then took me into the car.”
“I-um yeah I am,” I stumbled out nervously as I suddenly remembered how strong he had been last night when Deaton was trying to save him.
“And you were also with Liam,” He remembered and I just nodded, allowing him to collect his very much jumbled up thoughts. “I still don’t know what’s going on.”
“Do you um, do you remember last night?” I questioned uncertainly. I’m not entirely sure how I’m supposed to explain things to him when I can hardly get out a sentence. Plus, Brett was kind of intimidating and his bulging muscles definitely didn’t calm my nerves.
Brett furrowed his eyebrows as he fought with his amnesia to remember the previous night’s events. “You and some other people were holding me down. I was in so much pain.”
“It’s because you were p-poisoned,” I stuttered. “By wolfs bane.”
Brett eyed me for a second, probably wondering what my problem is, before saying, “That sure as hell didn’t feel like wolfs bane.”
“I-it was a rare kind.”
Everything seemed to slowly set in on Brett as he ran a hand through his hair. He then hopped down from the metal table, his abs moving flawlessly as we did so. “I need to get back to my pack.”
I bit my lip as I tried to come up with something to say. Luckily I didn’t need to as Deaton came in, “Good you’re awake,” Deaton noted as he looked at Brett. Then the veterinarian turned his attention to me, “Scott might be in trouble and I’m going to go out and find him, I’ll be back soon though.”
As soon as I heard that Scott might be in trouble, I felt like all my senses went on high alert. I quickly left behind Brett and walked after Deaton. “What do you mean Scott might be in trouble?”
“Chris Argent has a… hunch about it,” Deaton explained as he grabbed his keys.
“Take me with you.” I wasn’t sure if I was making a demand or just pleading with Deaton but either way Deaton seemed to smile softly.
“It could be dangerous,” He warned.
“If Scott’s in trouble then I want to help.”
Deaton sighed before telling Brett that we’ll be right back and then leading me out to his car. Once we began driving I finally had the nerve to ask questions.
“How much trouble is Scott in exactly?” I asked quietly. Knowing Scott, he was probably on the verge of death as he fought of the devil to save his loved ones but maybe he decided to do a ‘Switcheroo’ as Stiles would put it.
“Well it all depends on if they’re after him or not,” Deaton answered.
“Who?”
Deaton looked at me out of the corner of his eye, “Berserkers.”
All of a sudden the stories that Stiles and Scott had told me about the berserkers came rushing through my mind. Scott had made them seem so invincible seeing as he and Malia couldn’t defeat one of them. When more of the Berserkers showed up the two were-creatures thought their doom was upon them. Even when Kira showed up to help Scott had thought that they were still facing a million to one odds. Malia had even said that as soon as Peter had just heard the Berserkers the ex-alpha had sprinted in the opposite direction. So the thought of Scott, one of the people who I hold close to my heart, was facing off these monsters almost threw me into an anxiety attack right then and there.
“Charlotte, are you okay?” Deaton asked with a concern-filled voice. I just nodded my head as I tightly gripped the seat. “You know it’s very brave of you to come out here.”
“I just don’t like it when Scott’s in trouble,” I admitted quietly.
“Trust me, neither do I,” Deaton chuckled slightly which made me feel a tiny bit better, “But he’s strong, one of the strongest werewolves I’ve ever met. He can take care of himself.”
“If he can take care of himself then why does he need a vet to come help him?”
Deaton faltered for a second before he could come up with an adequate response. “Everyone needs a little help sometimes.”
I nodded and sat back in my seat some. The rest of the car ride was quiet up until when I could practically hear my heart pounding in my ears once we arrived at our destination. Out of the three cars that were there one was wrecked, another was deserted, and the other had Chris Argent stepping out of it while he held a phone to his ear. Without a moment’s hesitation, I unbuckled myself and jumped out of the car the moment the car had come to a stop.
There were bodies scattered around the wrecked car. The first two that I saw were Mr.McCall and a barely conscious Sheriff Stilinski. Next I saw Scott who was just wreathing in pain. Lastly there was a bloody Garrett who – from the looks of the gaping hole in his chest—seemed to be dead or close to it. Naturally, I rushed over to Scott’s side.
“Scott! Oh my god, Scott!” I shouted feebly as I feel to my knees next to him. Lodged into his side was some form of a dagger that looked like it was causing him an insane amount of pain. “Please don’t be dead or dying.”
“Char?” Scott groaned out. So he’s not dead but I’m not so sure about the dying part.
“I’m here Scott. I’m right here.” I promised softly as tears filled my eyes. I could almost feel his pain and it was too much for me. People like Scott and his mom should never know that pain is even a real thing.
Scott then let out a voice that resembled the sound of a puppy whimpering before his half-opened eyes closed completely as he slipped away into unconsciousness. One of my tears dripped down from my face and onto his jacket before I could even stop it.
“Stay with me Scott,” I whispered as I hugged as close as I could without further injuring him. “I’ve already lost Isaac and now I can’t lose you and Liam. Not in the same day.”
“Charlotte, is he okay?” Chris rushed over to me as he looked down with worry at Scott.
I slowly made myself nod, “He’s just unconscious for now.”
By this point Deaton had already made it over to us. “I just called an ambulance for the others but right now I think we’ve got to get Scott back to the animal clinic.”
Again I was slowly nodding as I let Scott go and let the two men load him into Deaton’s car. Then I hopped into the passenger seat which was the perfect angle for me to be able to keep looking back at Scott. All this worry seemed to be bubbling up inside of me and it felt like it was turning into hot lava. Right now one of my closest friends was bleeding out in a seat behind me while Liam is still missing. It’s been almost a whole day since he’s been missing and it still doesn’t hurt any less knowing I can’t help him. And now that Garrett is dead does that mean I’ll never see him again? Have I lost yet another person that I let myself care for?
