✧Battle Cry✧
So this chapter is inspired by the song Battle Cry by Imagine Dragons. I have left the video link for the Lyric video over to the side so check it out! But warning, it is kinda flashy I guess and I'm not sure if all of you would be okay with that? I dunno but still check it out!
Chapter 28 ✧Battle Cry✧
I quickly slid out of the passenger seat of Isaac's rental car as he and I moved towards the building. It was Chris Argent's but, according to Stiles, Scott and Kira had taken Satomi's pack here.
"You know, it's okay if you want to leave," Isaac said, hesitating to open the door's that would lead us inside.
"I'm not going to back down, Isaac," I told him. I looked up at his eyes, a mirror image of my own, a replication of our mothers. They creased ever to slightly as Isaac gave me a small smile.
"You've grown up," He decided, "And I'm not sure if I like it. I still want to protect you."
I let out a quick, shaky laugh, "I won't complain if you do."
"I'll hold you to that," Isaac chuckled before finally pulling the door open and leading us inside.
Through the maze of construction and plastic sheets, Isaac managed to catch the scent of Scott and lead me to him. Once we got to the True Alpha we saw he was accompanied by a good portion of Satomi's pack that had apparently survived the supernatural smallpox epidemic, Kira, and Chris Argent.
Scott beamed at me when he saw my brother and I walking side by side. He and Isaac did that weird slap-hands-and-then-hug-thing that buys are just so fond of doing before he turned to look at me, "Happy Birthday, Charlotte."
"It's your birthday?" Kira questioned and I nodded in response, "Happy Birthday!"
"As a big of a deal it is to turn fifteen, I'm afraid we'll have to celebrate later," Chris cut into our conversation.
"The hunter is right," It was Derek's turn to speak as he arrived with Braeden by his side, "We have to get ready for a battle."
"You definitely haven't changed," Isaac noted, eyeing Derek before taking notice of Braeden with wide eyes, "You're her, that girl that saved me from the alpha's."
"That I am," Braeden agreed with a small smirk, "Good to see you're still alive, Isaac."
"Right back at ya."
Around us, people began moving to their positions. Those who couldn't fight were put into safe places, Chris got some help setting up some traps, and Derek began sorting out what little weapons we had. It seemed like it was literally going to be us against the world. How lovely.
I walked over to Scott after he finished talking to Satomi. She seemed to like him, probably sensing the fact that he was indeed a true alpha.
"We need to start coming up with better plans," I murmured to him. Past him I saw Brett staring at us and I quickly cast my eyes to the ground. I might want to be able to help my friends but that doesn't mean I can start going out and making new ones. I'm still not ready for that.
"I'm not sure that's ever going to happen," Scott said, a sense of seriousness behind his joking tone as he did so.
I let out a sigh and nodded before I felt a hand on my shoulder. I turned to see my brother looking down to me. The height difference between the two of us was almost comedic.
"We needed to talk," Isaac explained, pulling me away from Scott slightly, "When all of this fighting goes down I don't want you to be in the middle of this. You need to hide."
"You mean like I would when dad would beat you?" I questioned without even thinking. The sudden memory of what our father would do to us left a look of evident shock on my brother's face. "Look, Isaac, I can't just keep letting the people I love most get hurt. I've seen Boyd, Erica, Aiden, Jackson, and Allison all slip away from us and I can't- I won't watch another person die. I won't be able to survive that."
Isaac's eyes began to get glassy as he nodded before gently pushing some hair away from my face, "I love you, Char."
"I love you, too."
Isaac nodded knowingly, a weak smile flickering across his face, "Good. Stay if you really want but if things get bad, if it get's too dangerous, I want you to go with the others, the one's who can't fight."
"I will, I promise," I told my older brother. Putting my hand over his as it cupped my face. He nodded solemnly before he kissed the top of my head. After a moment of silence we turned and walked over to be a part of the conversation Scott, Kira, Braeden and Derek were having.
"Scott, have you heard anything from Stiles or Lydia yet?" Braeden asked the teen wolf.
"Lydia is still talking to Meredith," Scott explained, "Stiles and Malia are heading to the lake house. They're trying to stop it."
"What if their is no stopping it?" Isaac asked his old team mate. I gave my brother a small frown. Isaac's negativity was surely something Stiles would've commented on if he were here.
"Yeah," Brett called to us as he stepped in front of his pack, "What if it doesn't end until we're all dead?"
Everyone got silent. It was definitely a possibility that that'd happen. Even if we do survive tonight, who's to say we'll survive the next time this happens. More and more people are getting the hit list and there's less of us being able to survive. Things are getting even more dangerous by the second, especially now that the sun is visibly setting. Once darkness nestles in the hunter's will be coming out.
"Then let's send a message," Derek decided, breaking the terrified silence with a heroic tone that was becoming his new trademark, "Let's make tonight perfectly clear to anyone with a copy of that list." Derek began to back away from our little group, his voice getting louder so he can address everyone, "It doesn't matter if they're professional assassins or hunters, or an ametuer who just picked up a gun. Anyone who thinks that they can hunt and kill us for money is gonna be put on another list, our list. They get to be a name on our deadpool."
Braeden cocked her gun as if that were a declaration of agreement to Derek's speech. His words settled with everyone and suddenly there were no more questions. Derek had somehow sparked something in everyone and nobody was ready to give up their lives tonight.
Suddenly, something crashed to the ground. The sound of breaking glass shattered our valiantly placed silence that Derek had conjured. Everyone jumped, some to their battle positions while others to their hiding spots. Then, gunfire to the place of the sound of shattering glass. Isaac moved in front of me, his claws suddenly exposed as his eyes began to glow golden.
"Charlotte," Isaac shouted back at me, his voice distorted as it rang past his fangs, "This is when you run."
I huffed reluctantly, knowing he was right. As much as I wanted to help I knew I was no good. I had no claws or fangs or even supernatural healing abilities. I was just a little teenage girl who would end up getting in the way.
I gave my brother one last fleeting glance before I turned and ran to the far corner where I knew some of Satomi's pack would be hiding. I pushed back the plastic acting as a curtain that was shielding a girl my age and couple who looked to be in their late thirties. I hastily squeezed myself against the wall next to the girl before allowing the plastic to fall back into place.
Beyond the plastic, the fighting commenced. The plastic was like watching the fighting through a hazy mirror, I couldn't see exactly what was happening, I could just blobs of body masses that were colliding, running, and being thrown around. I could hear everything, though. I flinched with every growl, yelp, scream, plead, and howl that echoed throughout the building. The teenaged girl next to me seemed to be shaking almost as much as I was and for once my fear didn't seem to be completely and totally irrational.
Suddenly, bullets ripped through the plastic and tore into the chest of the man also hiding with us. The woman with him let out a shrill, high pitched shriek but I was too horrified to make any noise as I watch the effect the impact had on him. Just as blood began percolating from the side of him lips I was stumbling out of the hiding place with the girl by my side.
The two of us rushed away from what we had just witnessed. Together, we slowly made our way through the wreckage without stumbling into the middle of a full blown fighting scene. I was practically stumbling over my own feet, to terrified to even be able to produce a simple sound. But the girl I was with somehow found the strength the call out a name.
"Brett? Brett, where are you?"
But Brett did not come to our rescue. Instead, stepping out in front of us was a man clad in so much protective gear he resembled a member of a SWAT team. In his hands was an assault rifle that he held up so it was aimed straight for us.
Neither the girl nor myself moved as we knew it would do us no good. Instead, we huddled closer together. Two petrified strangers banding together in a moment of terror, knowing that they were being dragged to death's door together. I grasped her hand tightly and we both closed our eyes. The fear I had now almost greater than any fear I had ever felt. I held my breathe and felt a tear trickle down my cheek. Not even now, in my very last moments, could I manage to be brave.
The impact of the bullet never came to take the life away from my body. The girl next to me was still squeezing my hand which told me she too was alive. Suddenly, I heard a gun clattering to the ground and my eyes snapped open once more.
Scott McCall.
Atop the man who was just about to kill me and the teenaged werewolf grasping my hand was the red-eyed werewolf. He knocked the hunter to the ground and began beating him. A growl tore its way from Scott's throat, almost like a battle cry.
The sudden change in events caused the girl and I to stumble backwards and ultimately fall to the ground. Without even attempting to get up, we began crawling away from the fighting until we reached a support beam. Then I looked back to see Scott still on top of my almost-murderer. Something was off, though. Scott's face was darker, more distorted, more wolf-like.
All of the sudden the gunfire ceased. Those attacking us simultaneously backed down and disappeared into the shadows almost as well as the Oni had. I let out a heavy breathe, finally remembering that I needed to breath.
I looked back to Scott whose face was back to it's usual werewolf form. Whatever I had seen before must've simply just been a trick of the lighting.
"Charlotte!" My brother's worried voice rang out as he slid to his knees beside me.
"I-I'm okay," I croaked out, forcing myself to sit up better. But even though I was indeed okay, a cry raked through my body and I felt myself heaving for air. Isaac pulled me to his chest as he sat on the ground next to me, letting me cry all my fears and worries away in his arms like I had done so many times before.
"Sh, sh, Charlotte, I'm here, okay? I've got you. Nobody will hurt you as long as I'm here," Isaac swore, rocking back and forth slightly as he did so. My body drug out one last sob and with a final hiccup I managed to pull myself together enough to look into my brothers eyes.
"We're alive?" I asked. It seemed like a foolish thing to do but I just needed the confirmation.
"Yeah we're alive," Isaac let out a half-hearted laugh, "I'm sure your boyfriend will be overjoyed to hear that."
For now, I choose to ignore that comment and with help from my brother, I made my way to my feet. Braeden and Derek appeared through a veil of plastic and soon Kira was limping to a bloodied Scott's side.
"Is it over?" Kira asked the question on all of our minds, "Is it really over?"
A slightly stunned looking Scott looked over at the Kitsune and nodded once.
