Chapter 16
"You're next?" I said out loud "What does that even mean?"
I got my answer soon after, I heard a huge crash behind me and turned around to see my apartment in flames.
"Oh no!" Taylor exclaimed as she ran towards the building, but I grabbed her hand.
"Don't!" I said.
"But Kaylee's in there, you fool!" She exclaimed, panic evident in her face.
I called 911 to report the incident, and soon firetrucks and ambulances had reached the scene. I sat on a bench nearby praying that they'd save Kaylee. She had all the information we needed, and she was also my friend.
Taylor sat beside me.
"I'm sure she'll be fine, I mean she has her inventions, I'm sure she'll save herself," She said, but I could sense that she didn't entirely mean it.
I was staring anxiously at the stretchers coming out of the building, paramedics rushing to save lives. I couldn't help but feel guilty if I wasn't so hell-bent on finding this person, all these innocents would be safe. Kaylee would be safe.
I couldn't make out who the people on the stretchers were due to the blankets covered on them, but I couldn't identify a few physical features, and none matched Kaylee's. I'd recognise her brown fluffy hair anywhere. Did she burn to ashes? No!
All the ambulances had left long before with the patients, and the firetruck left too. What about Kaylee? Did they not find her.
I wanted to rush to the hospital, but before I could two police officers approached us, to investigate the fire.
"What happened?" One asked.
I wanted to tell them everything, about C.A and all the clues we had. But something stopped me.
"I don't know, I came back home from jogging and suddenly the buildings burst into flames," I said with tears in my eyes.
They asked a few more, pretty random questions to both me and Taylor before leaving.
"Arya!" A familiar voice exclaimed.
"Ethan?" I asked not expecting to see him here.
"I'm so glad you're ok! I was so worried when I heard about the fire" He said catching his breath.
"Who told you about the fire?" Taylor asked.
"Oh, My mom did," He said quickly before turning back to me.
"You know you're always welcome to stay in my place," He said "My parents would love to have you"
"Thanks, but no, she's staying with me," Taylor said before dragging me to her car. We got inside and drove off. I felt kinda bad ditching Ethan, but we had somewhere to be.
We pulled up in front of the hospital and ran to the reception.
"Where's Kaylee?" I asked.
"Surname?" The receptionist asked.
Taylor and I both stared at each other, realizing we either never knew or didn't remember her surname.
"From the fire accident in Merivale apartments, today," Taylor said trying to handle the situation.
"She would've come in about an hour ago," I said trying to help. The receptionist looked up from her computer and I was afraid she was going to say Kaylee wasn't here.
"All patients from that accident are in Section 107, floor 4," She said. We ran towards the lift.
"They were probably too busy saving lives they didn't note down everyone's name yet," Taylor said.
"Yeah" I nodded.
We asked a nurse where section 107 was and ran there. Oh no! It was the ICU section. I and Taylor peeked through the windows trying to find Kaylee, but it was a little difficult with all the doctors fussing over the patients.
We sat in the waiting room, hoping Kaylee was ok, and it was nothing life-threatening. But looking at the way doctors were running around, I wasn't so sure. I could no longer stop the tears that came out of my eyes and down my cheek. This was my fault, I roped Kaylee and Taylor into my mess, and now not only them but so many random people are in danger. Should I stop? Is finding the killer worth risking so many lives?
It was eventually got dark, and the doctors seemed to be relatively calm. I approached one doctor to ask him about Kaylee.
"Doctor? Is Kaylee alright?" I asked.
"Are you her family member?" He asked.
"I'm a close friend, we sort of live together," I said awkwardly.
"Ah! Right! We've been struggling to find a relative of Kaylee's we're glad you're here" He said.
"What happened to her?" I asked.
"She's one of our luckier patients, she received third-degree burns on her arm and abdomen, but it's been treated," The doctor said.
He went on to explain the do's and dont's and all that stuff. We slept at a motel near the hospital and decided to visit Kaylee the next day. I woke feeling so much more relieved, I didn't bring any clothes, but I didn't care, I ran to the hospital.
I slowly opened the door and saw Kaylee in a classic hospital gown, eating food from a tray.
"I'm so sorry," I said walking towards her.
"This wasn't your fault. I chose to help you, and I'll never leave your side" she said squeezing my hand.
Taylor entered had a little chat with Kaylee before we got to the point.
"You said you know where the sidekick lives" I started.
"1730, Robson Street," She said.
"I doubt this information will help us," Taylor said.
"What do you mean?" I asked.
"What will we get by knowing where a sidekick lives? I doubt she'd reveal anything about C.A" She said.
"When we were spying on them she mentioned having kids, maybe C.A was threatening her and her children, she didn't seem interested in being evil" Kaylee pointed out.
"Which means even if we find her alone, she may not reveal anything for her children's sake" I finished.
"At least it's something," Kaylee said trying to lighten the mood.
"Ok, how about this" Taylor started "Arya, you stay here with Kaylee, and I'll find out more about the Adams family"
"Good idea!" I said "Kaylee can use the dragonfly to warn you if anything happens"
Taylor nodded, put on her coat and walked out of the room, I followed after her and grabbed her hand. She turned around and our eyes locked.
"Be careful"
She nodded and left, I went back inside and pulled up a chair near her bed. I took control of the dragonfly while Kaylee looked through the monitor.
We watched as Taylor got inside her car and drove towards Newton street, where the crematorium was. She got outside and, didn't do anything for a while. I assumed she was thinking of a plan.
She spent the next two hours making phone calls, and other stuff with her phone, she even went into a cafe and sat with her laptop.
"She's probably looking them up online" Kaylee suggested.
Suddenly the video started glitching, and it just stopped playing!
"What the heck?" I exclaimed in shock.
"Oh no! I think it's broken, I'll have to repair it later on" She said frowning.
"What do we do now?" I asked.
"We hope she finds something useful," She said sighing. I got a phone call from my mom so I went outside to answer. She asked about the fire, where I was going to live and all that stuff. I'm old enough to take care of myself, why is she so annoying?
I went back in to keep her company, being stuck in a hospital bed with nothing to do must be awful.
"Do you think you'll ever find the killer?" She asked.
"What do you mean?" I asked.
"You've had such close encounters with this person, like the time you were kidnapped, and you're not even close to the answer," She said.
"I don't know, I guess I just have faith," I said. "And after all this, it'd be stupid to stop"
"I guess, I would just really hate for this to end with one or all of us dead," She said grimly.
"W-What?" I stuttered.
"You and I saw how easy it is for them to kill people, why not us?" She asked.
"If you want to back out-" I started but was interrupted by Kaylee.
"It's not about wanting to back out, it's about realizing what we're up against," She said raising her voice.
"You're right," I said "We'll need to be more careful, until this all over at least"
"Your optimism is admirable" Was all Kaylee had to say to me.
"We just need a plan," I said. "One that'll lead us straight to C.A"
"It's getting late," She said.
"I should get going"
I walked out of the hospital and into the motel. I realized all my stuff burnt in the fire, and I'd have to go shopping the next day. I lay my head on the pillow and wrapped the blanket around me. I turned off every illuminating object in the room, being left with only darkness. I shut my eyes and prayed this would all end soon.
I woke up the next day, with something I'd never had.
A plan.
Author's note: Hey guys! What'd you think of the chapter? I know a lot of chapters end with them having a new idea, but I have a feeling this one will work :) Also, I want to start writing the story in the third person p.o.v, or at least change p.o.v's from chapter to chapter, I feel like the story is only being told from Arya's side, and I want that to change. Is it too late to change? Let me know. Anyway, vote and comment and stuff, I'll see you next week! Bye!
