Chapter 11
"WHAT!" I yelled taken aback by the news. I knew she was useful, that's why I let her come. But I didn't know she was so smart.
Although, the universe hates me and nice things never happen to me so I was a little sceptical. "How are you so sure?"
"Well, I actually made an invention that was able to locate the background in the image," She said in a professional tone.
"You're a scientist?" I asked loudly, with my eyes wide open.
"Well, not exactly. I want to be a scientist, but am never noticed" She said looking down sadly "I actually do freelance teaching for a living and make inventions because it's my passion"
I regretted asking since it appeared as a sensitive topic, so I tried to change the subject.
"Where should we go?" I asked.
"I wasn't able to pinpoint the location, but I know it's in Ottawa, Canterbury Ave," She said.
"The only school I know in that area is Canterbury high school," I said scratching my chin. "This is huge! I'm texting Taylor"
"Wait no" Kaylee said hesitantly.
"What is it?" I asked worried that it was something bad.
"I just don't think you need to call her all the time" She went on "I know you guys know each other longer than you know me, but she's a busy person with a full-time job. Can she really make it here every time we need her?"
I was gobsmacked by what she said. I couldn't help but admit she was right, but I couldn't hide this information from Taylor. She'd be heartbroken if she found out.
"What do you say, Arya?" She asked.
I stayed silent for a few seconds before saying, "Ok"
We got on to her bike and she started driving. I kinda liked riding on a bike than a cab, the wind blowing in my face was incredible.
I saw a sign that read "Canterbury Ave" So I knew we were close. She drove for some more time, before stopping in front of a huge building which I recognised, as Olivia went here too so she told me a lot about it.
Lucky for us, it was a Sunday which meant there'd be no one inside apart from security staff.
"We're in luck, today's Sunday so the school is probably empty," Kaylee said removing her helmet.
"Except security people" I completed.
"So all we have to do is sneak in without them noticing, and we'll be fine," She said enthusiastically.
"But, what will do after that?" I asked, just realizing that we didn't have a solid plan.
"We'll deal with that later, come in," She said and started walking. I quickly caught up with her. The front gate was guarded by someone, so we needed to find another way in.
We walked to the other side of the fence surrounding the fence.
"We need something that'll help us climb over this," I suggested.
"But I don't see anything around," She said looking around.
"Just use one of your inventions" I joked.
"I don't carry them all with me you know." She said rolling her eyes.
"Wait, just bring your bike here!" I said excited that I had a good idea for once. "Then we can stand over it and go"
"Good idea," She said and ran away. While she was gone, my phone kept spamming me with notifications, so I switched it off. I wouldn't want my phone to cause any problems when we go inside.
Soon enough Kaylee was back with her bike, and we got inside one by one. We stayed close to the bushes so we could hide anytime we saw a guard coming.
We got inside the building and started to climb up the stairs. I was too busy looking around that I didn't notice a guard until we bumped right into him.
"Crap!" I say.
"Forgeto," Kaylee says and drags me away.
"What the hell was that!" I yelled.
"Keep it down," She said with her index finger on her lips. "I used this invention of mine, it makes people forget what happened in the last ten five minutes"
"Isn't that a little risky?" I asked. Her inventions seemed so dangerous.
"I know how to control them, believe me. I've been in training, and I can handle it" She said shrugging it off. We walked a little further until I read a sign that said 'LIBRARY'.
"What are we doing in a library? And how did you know this was the way to the library?" I asked. Maybe Taylor was right and we couldn't trust people we just met.
She looked away for a few seconds before replying "I used to study here"
"Why didn't you tell me?" I asked seeing no point in hiding that from someone.
"I just never found the need to," She said.
We entered the library, and there were huge shelves all stacked with books.
"So, what's the plan?" I asked.
"We find old annual publications, and try to find this mystery blond girl," She said, looking proud of herself.
"What exactly is an annual publication?" I asked, I knew I sounded dumb but it was better than being clueless the whole time.
"It's a book of pictures of stuff that happened in the school year, I guess I'm not sure how to explain it," She said awkwardly.
"Kind of like a yearbook?" I asked.
"Yeah, if that's what you call it," She said.
"But how will we know what year the blond girl was in school?" I asked.
"I'm not sure, you mentioned her winning in the year 2013, that might be worth checking out," She said.
"Great idea!" I replied and began looking around. It was pretty time-taking, for a while I could only spot dictionaries, novels and other stuff which I wasn't looking for.
"Arya, over here!" Kaylee whispered as to not draw too much attention.
"Did you find it?" I asked hopefully.
"Not yet, but this shelf has previous yearbooks, we just need to find the one we need," She said.
My eyes scanned the shelf, and I found the yearbook almost immediately.
"Hurry! I think someone's coming" Kaylee said in a panicked tone.
"Let's grab some other books, just to be safe," I said and grabbed everything I could and stuffed them all in my bag.
Suddenly, I heard the door creak open, and a gruff voice spoke.
"Who's inside?"
I thought we were gonna get caught for sure, but Kaylee could just make him forget if we got caught, so I felt a little confident. I looked at Kaylee who was pointing towards another exit to the library.
I heard the guard's footsteps go to the other side of the library. Kaylee nodded assertively, and we sprinted out of the library, and down the hall. We smashed a few things over, but we cared only about escaping.
"We have a problem," I said when we found somewhere to hide.
"What is it?" She asked.
"How will we climb up the fence without your bike? And what if they find your bike and the cops are involved?" I said panting.
"I'll just use my machine again!" she said and walked right up to the front gate.
"Who are you?" A guard asked with a raised eyebrow.
"Forgeto!!" She screamed, pushed him aside and we ran back to her bike. We hopped in, and she started driving.
I heaved a sigh of relief when we exited Canterbury ave, now that we had the yearbooks in hand, we could go through them whenever we wanted.
We came back to my apartment, and I opened the door. Kaylee opened her bag, and all the yearbooks fell out.
"That was intense!" She said.
"Ikr!!" I said.
I made us some pancakes and got some leftover poutine from yesterday and laid it out on the dining table. I was starving!
"What should we do now?" I asked.
"We should obviously go through these books," She said with her mouth full "Then maybe we can find her name"
I nodded my head and continued eating.
"You can look through them, I have something I need to do anyway," Kaylee said.
"What is it?" I asked.
"My inventions" She started "Are not always 'perfect'. Since I make them alone, there's no one to help me improve them. They usually stop working after a few uses, especially machines as convoluted as a memory eraser."
"So you need to fix it?" I guessed.
"Yep," She said. "But you'll be fine without me. How hard is it to go through a few books"
"True," I said. "I can always call Taylor for help"
"Taylor... Right of course" She said looking uncomfortable.
She left soon after she finished eating. I closed the door my head spinning with a million thoughts inside.
It was obvious she didn't like Taylor and didn't want her to help us. Which is weird because she seemed so friendly yesterday. Was it all an act? Couldn't she just talk it out with Taylor? Why did she lie to me?
My thoughts were cut short when I saw a message pop up on my screen.
"We need to meet"
WAS THERE ANYONE I COULD TRUST!!?!?!?!?!?!?
Author's note: Hey! How was the chapter? Pretty action-packed right? I have a feeling this book will end soon, but I don't know lol. Anyway, vote and comment and stuff, byee.
