Chapter 10
I was annoyed! I quickly dialled Taylor's number to tell her about the news.
"You won't believe what I just got! Come over quick!" I said in an agitated tone.
"Ok!" She exclaimed and hung up.
While waiting for her, I decided to the most of my time creating a mystery board. It was supposed to contain all the clues we had gotten so far. I printed pictures of premature deaths and newspaper clippings of murders and stuck them on.
I heard the bell ring and figured it was Taylor. I greeted her and she came inside.
"What's this?" She asked discomposed as she saw the board.
"Oh, it's a mystery board. I figured it was better to keep things organised" I said looking shy. Would she think I'm lame? I hoped not.
"What did you want to show me?" She asked sitting down on the couch. I opened the message and gave her my phone.
"This is horrible! We have to back down. We can't let ourselves get killed" She said worriedly.
"I was thinking quite the opposite honestly," I said rubbing my shoulders "This blond kid obviously feels threatened, which means we just need to find out who it is"
"I guess, but do you remember the last time you got a threat?" She asked looking at her shoulders.
I really wanted to go forward with this investigation, but I couldn't force Taylor into something she didn't want to do.
"But, since it's so important to you" She started.
My face lit up. "You'll do it?"
"Yes," she said and giggled.
"We can image search this photo" I suggested.
"But why would a high school graduation photo come?" She asked looking unconvinced.
"I know, but it's worth a shot. And we've got nothing to lose" I encouraged. She nodded in an affirmative manner.
"Check it out!" I yelled.
"What is it?" She asked coming closer to my face.
"Lorian Hemingway story competition winner of 2016" I readout.
"She's a writer?" Taylor asked surprised.
"Seems like it," I said. "This could be our only chance to find her name"
I opened the link that came up and scrolled down a little. There was a paragraph dedicated to the woman who had won the contest.
"Oh no," I frowned.
"What now?" She asked.
"It only mentions the pen name she used in the award, not her real name!" I exclaimed frustrated. The one time we get close to figuring it out, something like this happens.
"Does it at least mention where she studied?" Taylor asked.
"Let me check," I said feeling motivated by the idea.
"Nope" I sighed and rested my head on the couch.
"Well, what's her pen name?" She asked hopefully.
"Death Scribe," I said and grinned at the ridiculous name.
"Maybe we can contact anyone managing the awards? She won first place, they've got to have records somewhere" Taylor suggested.
"Good idea!" I said and went to the contact section of the website. I found a LinkedIn profile, a phone number and an email address.
I dialled the number given, but it went straight to voicemail.
"Shit!" I said
"It's fine, they might call back. Besides don't you have classes today" She asked.
"Oh silly me! I didn't tell you?" I asked cheerfully "I dropped out"
"Why would you do that silly girl?" She asked keeping her hand on her head.
"It was a distraction anyway, plus I never liked what I studied, I've always wanted to be a bass player for a band," I said holding my hand on my heart to make her feel bad.
"Uh, ok... It's your life, I won't bother you" She said and turned her gaze towards the mystery board.
"I need a coffee break," I said.
"Same! Let's go" She said as we headed out. We decided to walk since we're energetic people.
But as we were walking a black truck came in front of us!
"Help!!" I screamed. It was going to dash me but Taylor grabbed my shoulder as we rolled to the other side of the street.
Some men came out all armed with guns.
"You should've listened to her" One said in a gruff voice.
"Grr," Taylor said. I took a box of chilli powder from my bag along with a spoon. I took some and threw it at him. But before they got closer, I heard a few gunshots. I closed my eyes in fear and when I opened them I found a few of the men dead.
The ones that remained were shot by the police who had just arrived at the scene. I heaved a sigh of relief.
The mysterious person who saved us came out of the shadows. She wasn't the prettiest but wasn't bad either.
"You guys ok?" She asked in a British accent.
"Y-yes" I managed to say in shock.
"What's your name and age?" Taylor asked.
"Oh I'm Kaylee McClerk and I am 23 years old," She said trying to sound friendly.
"If you don't me asking, why did those buffoons try to kill you?" She continued. I looked at Taylor, not knowing whether or not to tell Kaylee.
"Excuse us for a second, we need to discuss something," Taylor said dragging me aside.
"You're not gonna tell her are you?" She whispered.
"I don't know, she seems helpful. She has a gun and everything! We could use someone like her" I said trying to sound convincing.
"I really don't think it's a good idea to trust some stranger who owns a gun which probably isn't even legal," She said trying to scare me. But I wouldn't get scared, I'm brave.
"I trusted you didn't I?" I asked in an attempt to make a fair point.
"You made a mistake, and I'll make sure it doesn't happen again," She said not backing down.
"You'll realize that this is a good decision," I said and walked off before she could reply.
I told her everything, from Olivia's death to the threats and even the kidnapping. To say she was shocked is an understatement.
"Wow," she said at a loss for words "I can help with the investigation you know"
"That would be awesome" I exclaimed.
Kaylee reached out her hand to Taylor in an attempt to tame her, but Taylor just stared down at her in pure rage. Kaylee pulled her hand back when she realized how badly Taylor detested her. But it didn't stop her from coming along.
We reached my house, and I showed her the mystery board. She took a while to observe the pictures and finally spoke up.
"This is impressive!" She exclaimed.
I felt a little bad for not giving Taylor a chance to say anything, but I could read people like a book. I knew she genuinely wanted to help me, and she had already proved herself by saving us. So why shouldn't we let her help?
"I really hope you don't plan on sticking around until we find the killer," She said coldly.
"I- I was planning on it to be honest," She said awkwardly.
Geez! Why did she have to be so rude? I decided to change the topic, I didn't want them to fight.
"What do you guys want for dinner?" I asked trying to sound enthusiastic to lighten up the mood. I don't know if they fell for it, or just acted but they went along with it.
"I'll cook" Taylor offered and I agreed. I don't normally let guests cook, but her meals were to die for. So I just couldn't help myself.
At dinner, I half expected her to make trash food so Kaylee would suffer, but she didn't. It was actually amazing! She made Calgary beef along with some poutine, while the dish was pretty basic, her way of cooking was just too awesome.
Once we had dinner, Taylor left for her house and Kaylee stayed over with me.
"Thanks for letting me stay," She said politely.
"You don't need to thank me, I should be thanking you. You are helping me with this investigation" I said gratefully.
"I'm not so sure it's a good idea. Taylor doesn't seem to like me" She said apologetically "I don't want to ruin your friendship"
"Nonsense!" I exclaimed "She'll get over it, and she'll also realize how awesome you are"
I hoped that it would cheer her up, and I think it worked. I set my alarm for 7:00 and went to sleep. I was woken up by constant patting on my shoulder and a voice calling out to me.
"Arya, get up!" Kaylee said.
"What is it?" I groaned half asleep. Before I knew it, Kaylee splashed some water on my face to get me awake.
"What the hell Kaylee!" I cried out loud.
"Forget that," She said brushing it off.
"I think I know what the picture means"
