The shadows were chasing after me. I can't run. I'm cemented to the ground, preventing me from fleeing and leaving me no choice but to watch as the shadows approach, my heartbeat speeding as they approached closer and closer, emitting an intimidating aura that made my skin crawl. I closed my eyes, humming a happy tune silently, but I stopped constantly to swallow my own spit. Each time I stopped, my eyes clenched tighter and tighter. The moment I opened my eyes, the shadow was right in front of me, eyes parallel with mine, staring right into my soul. I screamed as the rest of its kin surrounded me, forming a prison that's preventing me from escaping.
"Kotoneeeeeee..." They called, sing-song like but only with a much more creepier tune.
Like a group of dead children's souls reenacting their happiest moments.
"Koooootoooooneeeeeee..."
"KOTONE!"
My eyes snapped open as I bolted upright, sweat glistening on my forehead.
'Do I really have to call your name THREE times to wake you up? You are a deep sleeper.'
"Right... Sorry Mum. I was just having a nightmare."
'Right. Well, honey, don't fall asleep in the car again.'
"Sorry."
'Well, we're here. Your new junior high school.'
"Bye Mum, have a nice day."
'You too!'
I closed the door behind me, taking a good look at my new Junior high. I had to move from Tokyo to Osaka since my dad found a new job there, It was kinda hard leaving the house that I had grown up in, hard leaving the friends I've bonded with, and hard leaving the neighbors that I had become friends with.
The school gates were open wide open, it was welcoming the students with warm arms. The school building itself was painted a shiny shade of silver that glistened in the Spring sun. It was approximately three stories tall, with the words "暁中学校" in bronze font on the front of the school. 2Sakura trees surrounded the school grounds, the light wind made it rain pink as the petals fell from the trees, gracefully gliding to the ground.
I stepped inside the school gates, and I took a good look at everything around me. The students were piling in, girls in white sailor fuku uniforms chattering amongst themselves while boys in white blouses laughed at a joke. Nobody seemed to notice the new girl standing nervously at the gate, examining her surroundings.
I thought today was gonna be a normal school day.
I was wrong.
DEAD WRONG.
"I know right? And then Hinata-"
Something bumped into me, knocking me off my feet and collapsing on the ground. Great. A new bruise is PERFECT.
"Oh my god, I am so sorry, are you alright?" A girl said as two other voices made concerned noises.
I looked up, facing a girl with rose hair tied back into pigtails with messy but cute bangs covering her forehead. One girl behind her was blond with shining blue eyes, and the other one's hair was short and turquoise. All wearing matching sailor fuku uniforms.
"Wait... You're new..." She suddenly realised.
'Y-yes, I'm new here. Senritsu Kotone, You?'
"You don't need to know my name." The pink haired girl scoffed as her two friends giggled.
'Don't tell me that these girls are the bullies here.' I thought to myself as the three girls giggled.
"So... Tell me the poem of the Sakura tree."
'I... I don't know...'
"And the West wing?"
'West wing? I... What?'
"What about Yoshiro-kun?"
'Yoshiro? Who's that?'
"Hear that girls? This girl doesn't know anything about this place! She's probably dyslexic or she's just plain stupid. Probably both."
They all laughed.
"But hey Sakura, Imagine what we'll get this girl to do for us? Threaten to lower her test scores if she doesn't get us 350,000 yen? A slave is definitely worth it." The Turquoise haired girl laughed, followed by her friends. 'Besides, it's been a while since we had a new plaything.'
"And what's with that hair? We hardly ever see people with Green hair 'round here." The blond girl teased, pointing to my hair with a polished nail.
'That's enough you three.' A voice came behind me. When the three girls looked up with an annoyed look to see who it was, they just stared.
'Now, I've had enough of you three. If you continue to bully the people here, I'm afraid I'll have to expel you.'
They just groaned before turning away, while Sakura turned around, looking me dead in the eye.
'I'll get you soon.' She growled between clenched teeth.
"Who... Who were they?" I asked, turning around.
It was a boy, around the same age as me, only with hair the colour of lemons. Heck, he even smelled like them. He wore the normal summer uniform for boys, a typical white shirt with black pants, but on his arm, was a red armband, with the words 生徒会 written on it.
'Bullies, I've beginning to get tired of them. I have to admit, Girl bullies are much MUCH more worse than guys.' He groaned, rubbing his neck with his eyes closed and eyebrows angled downwards.
'Oh, Sorry, I forgot to introduce myself, Hakumei Hideyoshi. School council leader and Principal's son. You can call me Hide if you want.'
"Thanks Hide, I appreciate it. Who knows, they would have poisoned my 5bento or anything along those lines."
'No problem. Hey, do you know which class you're in?'
"N...No..."
'Come.'
He turned around, gesturing me to follow him. I tailed along, watching the scenery as I go, the Sakura are in full bloom, and the gentle wind is carefully blowing them off their branches, fluttering and gliding them down to the floor. I was watching the petals flutter to the ground gently, when I saw a patch of black.
It was another schoolboy, standing directly under the sakura tree, staring into nothing. Except when I took another look, he was staring right at me. Dead into my eyes, into my soul. Like the shadows in my dream. Just the thought of it made me shudder in fear.
It wasn't the stare that scared me, it was the look on his face.
Emotionless. 0% emotion. Just pure white eyes staring at me like pearls and hair the colour of the moon. Now that you think about it, his hair matched with his clothes look like the moon shining in the dead of the night.
"We're here."
I glanced at Hide, looking at the lists.
"The classes are in no particular order, so it's not like Ansatsu Kyoshitsu where people with good grades end up in Class A while people with bad grades end up in Class E, So don't worry."
I glanced up at the huge list of names, searching for mine. Until finally,
旋律 琴音
"Ah! There I am! I'm in B Class!" I smiled pointing at my name up on the list. Hide glanced in that direction.
'Kotone, huh? That's a really nice sounding name. Also, that surname is pretty cool. Senritsu...'
"Thanks."
'By the way, since your name is Kotone... Can you play the Koto?'
"A lot of people asked me that, No, but I want to."
I glanced back in the direction the white haired boy was in. He was gone. He must've seen me staring back at him. But still, something about him attracted me towards him. Maybe it was that mysterious look on his face. Possibly those eyes.
Shame I didn't know his name.
