Chapter 10: Adjustment

John and Christine were getting ready to go to one of Mick's parties as Olivia came in and sat down beside of her mum.

"Mum, is it okay if I have a friend over?" Olivia asked her.

"Boy or girl?" John asked, trying to button the cuff links on his sleeves.

"Its a guy but why does it matter?" Olivia asked.

"Because I don't want to come in and see some boy trying to take advantage of my little girl." John said.

"Daddy, he's a really sweet guy, so can I invite him over, please mum?" Olivia asked, John shot a glance at Christine.

"Of course, but no boys allowed upstairs and no sex on the couch." Christine said.

"And we mean it too." John said.

"Mum, dad. I'm still a virgin and so is Beau." Olivia said as Christine smiled while putting the finishing touches on her hair and makeup.

"Well, I hope you and Beau have a great evening and be sure to check on Emily from time to time, check on Molly as well and make her a bottle and change her diaper before she goes to bed." Christine said.

"We will and this isn't my first rodeo of taking care of her." Olivia said.

"And don't let Emily leave tonight, she's still grounded from the incident. Keep a good, firm eye on her." John said.

"I know the rules and don't worry about a thing, now I'll leave you two alone." Olivia said, kissing her mum and dad's cheek as she walked out of their room.

"Our daughter is having some guy named Beau over, just great." John said as Christine came over to where he was standing.

"Johnny, she's a grown woman with a life of her own and if she's happy, then that's all that matters." Christine said.

"I'm not used to her dating. I still see that little girl who asked for me to check for monsters under her bed, our pillow fights and her running through the sprinklers on a warm with her little popsicle grin. I miss those days and now, I just am lost because she doesn't need me as much anymore." John said as Christine held him to her.

"I know darling, but we raised her strong and independent. I miss all that too but now, we get to see all the joys in our children's lives and she'll always need her daddy by her side, no matter what." Christine said.

"I wish that we could have a time machine, freeze time and go back to when you said you were expecting and us being so excited for the triumphs of welcoming our children." John said.

"I wish that too but our children have their own lives and now, I would not change anything, maybe a few but we started over and I'm happy with our life we have now." Christine said.

"Me too darling." John said.

"Now, let's get going." Christine said as they walked downstairs, greeting their kids and Olivia's friend, Beau to which John was a a little bit hesitant to shake his hand but did it to let his oldest daughter know that no matter who she wound up with or married, she was always going to be his little girl.

"Bye guys, have fun." Olivia said to her parents.

"We will." Christine said.

"Remember the rules." John said.

"Don't worry daddy, I have everything under control." Olivia said.

"Okay, we love you guys." Christine said as her and John walked out the door to his car, him opening her door as she got in and they were off to the party.

...

Christine and Stevie made themselves comfortable as it was just them while John and Mick were in the kitchen, talking about business.

"How are my godkids doing?" Stevie asked.

"Well, Henry is at his dorm tonight, Olivia is at home watching Emily and Molly." Christine said as John and Mick entered the room.

"Not to tell you that I'm none too thrilled about the guy at our house with our daughter, probably thinking what I was thinking when I was his age." John said.

"Olivia has a guy over?" Stevie questioned.

"She's grown and it's not like I did not leave any rules with them to follow." Christine said.

"I still don't like it." John said.

"She needs to explore her options and besides, she's never had a boyfriend before and I don't see any harm in it." Christine said.

"I do." John said.

"Honey, let her have this special moment in her life." Christine said as John hated the idea that one of his little girls is now dating.

"You never know John, this might be a great thing. Olivia is an adult who can make her own decisions, her own path in life." Mick said.

"You have four daughters and how would you feel if your girls, which you have a young daughter yourself, started dating and married the first guy she meets?" John asked him.

"Olivia is a bright, young woman and if she gets married one day to this young man, it'll be good for her." Stevie said.

"I'm just having a hard time, this an adjustment and I just feel she grew up too fast. I still remember when Christine was pregnant with her." John said, having a flashback to when Christine was about to have Olivia.

*Flashback*

Christine was sitting on the couch, feet propped in John's lap as she was sketching while John was reading a book, just having some time alone while Henry was taking a nap.

"She's moving all over the place, feel." Christine said, taking John's hand and placed it on her stomach.

"Our little penguin is swimming sweetheart. Aren't you darling?" John asked as Christine teared up at this moment, feeling their daughter kick his hand.

"She's ready to make a break for it." Christine said.

"Well, we still have two more weeks before she makes her grand entrance. Mick decided to postpone the recording sessions until later." John said.

"It'll be weird not going with you. I know it was my idea but with my phobia of flying gives me anxiety and I'm not ready to tour as of right now." Christine said.

"We miss you darling but we know that you had a hard time being away from Henry and flying was just not your thing anymore, but I love you and our little family." John said

"I know darling but I love being home with our children and doing the things I never had time to do. I love being a mum and I miss you all, but I always this. I always wanted to be a mum, a wife and just be here with you and our two precious little ones." Christine said.

"You and our children mean more to me than a tour ever will." John said, feeling where their baby was moving around at.

"I just hate watching you leave for months on end. I miss everything about you like when you hold me close, hold my hands like if I'm feeling nervous or just need a hug. I miss your touch and the feel of your lips on mine. I miss all the little things and when you're not here, I feel like apart of me is missing even though we call each other every night when you're gone." Christine said as she started crying, John pulled her gently into his lap, kissing her forehead.

"I miss you too baby and I can stay home and help you with our babies." John said.

"You'd do that for me?" Christine asked.

"Of course darling. These past few years have brought me so much joy that I would not miss anything for the world." John said as they heard the sound of little footsteps come into the living room.

Christine lifted him up onto her lap as Henry curled up against her chest.

"Did you have a nice nap darling?" Christine asked him as Henry was rubbing her stomach.

"Yeah." Henry said as he was still tired.

"Want a little snack before dinner?" Christine asked as Henry played with one of her loose curls since they went out to lunch earlier and they all dressed up.

"Here darling, let me hold him." John said as Christine swiftly put their son in her husband's arms.

"Daddy?" Henry mumbled the question.

"How's my little penguin doing?" John asked him.

"Mummy's tummy." Henry said as he placed his hand on her stomach.

"Mummy and I are about to have your baby sister, she'll be here in two weeks." John said.

"What about me?" Henry asked as Christine looked at John.

"Sweetheart, daddy and I love you too. You will always be my baby, from now until the end of time." Christine said.

"I just want to be your baby Mummy, no one else's." Henry said as Christine just held her son and looked at John, not knowing what to say.

"It'll be alright darling, once he holds her, they'll be best friends." John said as he made tea sandwiches for a snack.

"I'm hoping so." Christine said.

*End of Flashback*

"Her and Henry are the best of friends now." Christine said.

"Who was the jealous one when you were pregnant with Emily?" Mick asked.

"Olivia, she liked being the only girl and when we found out we were expecting Emily, Olivia was none too thrilled about having to share anything of hers with her sister." Christine said.

"I'm just trying to adjust to one of my little girls becoming independent and  especially when it comes to them having a boyfriend." John said as Christine wanted to ease her husband's mind as she placed her hand on his thigh to get him to unwind.

John noticed her hand and how much he was letting it bother him, but it was hard to adjust to the fact that his oldest daughter was dating.

"Just relax darling." Christine whispered in his ear.

"Oh, I'm relaxed darling." John said.

"Good." Christine said.

"Let's dance." John said as they got up and started slow dancing with the other couples.

"Did I ever tell you how beautiful you are?" John asked as Christine smiled.

"You tell me that everyday and I never get tired of hearing it, even on the days where I feel like I'm not." Christine said.

"You're the most beautiful woman in the whole world and I could never imagine my life without you in it. You are everything to me Christine and I love you more than words, which I know I'm a man of a few words but when it comes to you, I'd tell everyone how grateful I am to know that you are with me." John said as he held Christine close to him.

"That's how I feel when I'm with you, I'm so blessed to know that I wake up each day with you by my side and I always think how handsome you are and how much I love you for being there for all the times where I needed someone the most. I couldn't imagine being with anyone else and I gave my heart away a long time ago to you and you are everything to me and our children." Christine said as John smiled, leaning in to kiss her when Mick came in, looking for him.

"Hey Christine, Olivia is on the phone." Mick said as John and Christine rushed into Mick's office to get some privacy just in case something was wrong.

"Olivia? What's wrong darling? Is everything alright?" Christine picked up the phone, worried something might have happened.

"Everything is fine mum. Emily and Molly had dinner, I gave Molly a bath and they are upstairs, asleep." Olivia said.

"When your Uncle Mick came in the living room while your father and I were slow dancing, he said you were on the phone and I started panicking." Christine said.

"Everything is fine mum, but I wanted to talk to you about something. Are you alone?" Olivia asked her.

"Your father is in here with me." Christine said, worried about what her daughter had to say.

"Okay, well I just wanted to tell you this because we never have any time to talk on the phone." Olivia said.

"Go on darling, I'm in no rush." Christine said.

"Beau asked me if I wanted to move in with him and I panicked mum." Olivia said, nervously.

"What did you say?" Christine asked her.

"That we've only been dating for six months." Olivia said.

"Did he act mature about it, saying it was okay to wait or act immature, walking away, angry that you have to make your mind up and leave when you  told him your decision?" Christine asked her daughter.

"The last part, he was so immature, saying that I was always going to live with my parents for the rest of my life and he was walking around kicking the air and then left, slamming the front door. I messed things up good this time mum and I didn't want to disturb the party but I didn't know who else to call." Olivia said, crying and sniffling.

"It's alright baby, honestly the party is a little lame anyway but let me go get your daddy and we'll be on our way home." Christine said.

"Okay mum." Olivia said.

"Alright baby, I'll see you here in a little while. Is there anything you'd like us to pick up from the store?" Christine asked her.

"Ice cream." Olivia said.

"Okay darling, be there soon and I love you." Christine said.

I love you too mum." Olivia said they hung up the phone.

Christine walked back in and got John to the side.

"Olivia called me." Christine said.

"What happened?" John asked her.

"Her and Beau broke up." Christine said.

"Is she okay?" John asked her.

"She said she just needs her mum, a good cry, a shoulder to cry on and some ice cream." Christine said.

"I want to break that boy's neck for hurting my little girl." John said.

"Beau asked her to move in with him since they had been only dating for six months. Anyway, he broke up with her, got upset and left, so let's go be with our daughter because she needs us." Christine said as John clenched his fists.

"You leave that arrogant little prick for me to deal with." John said.

"We'll deal with him together if he comes around again." Christine said.

"Now, let's go tell Mick we're leaving so he doesn't worry." John said as they headed into the kitchen.

They told everyone that they were leaving as they headed for their car, driving by the store and when they got there, Olivia was asleep on the couch as John carefully picked his little girl up while Christine followed him up to her bedroom.

"We love you sweetheart." John and Christine said at the same time as they kissed her head, making sure she had her glass of water and tissues.

They made their way to their bedroom as Christine felt her daughter's pain but for now, she just needed to be there for her.
