Why Couldn't It Have Just Been a Wolf

Ash

My head whips to the side as Jax lands a punch on my jaw. I smirk at him and round house kick his ass. Well, by ass I mean temple. We have be at this fight for a while now, neither of us willing to lose. We have gathered quite the crowd from both packs by now. White Stone Pack knows to take this as a learning opportunity and I can tell they are watching our techniques and skills. Blood Paw Pack is just staring at Jax and I, they mouths catching flies.

By now, I have some claw marks and bruises. I got Jax pretty good too. He has his lower leg broken and has healed wrong which causes him to limp. All the bruises I have gave him have healed pretty quickly all thanks to Max.

Jax lunges and punches at my flank, but I spin to the side, causing him to miss and I kick his lower back. Jax stumbles forward into a tree. I reach for my knife in my belt, but realize that I didn't put in on this morning. Great. I am so going to lose again without being able to use fire.

I run and body check Jax hard into the tree to hopefully disorient him. Jax stumbles slightly and I take the chance to kick his legs out from under him causing him to fall. I get on top of him, but I won't be able to keep him there for long. I may have pretty good strength but he is still stronger, so I have to be smarter.

Jax throws me off of him and I land hard on my back a few feet away. Jax is on top of me all I can think of is how much I wish I had my silver knife right now.

Jax's eyes go wide and he slides off of me to the ground. I look at him and notice that there is a knife embedded in his stomach. What happened? Who did that? I look around but everyone seems to be shocked. I look at Jax who is staring at me in wonder.

"What happened? Who did that?" I whisper to Jax so no one else can hear.

"That was you, where did you get that knife from?" He manages to groan out.

"I-I don't know," I breathe out.

I grip the knife from Jax's stomach and remove it. Jax is already healing from the wound slowly due to the silver. I drop the knife to the ground and I go to stand up when I realize that the knife is gone. Just poof. Vanished in thin air.

I look confused for a moment before wiping it off of my face. I hold out a hand for Jax which he takes and we begin to walk away from the crowd to the pack hospital in town. I can tell that Jax wants to ask about what happened and I know I owe him an explanation.

"What I am about to tell you, you have to keep a secret, okay?"

"Of course," Jax responds.

"Are you okay to sit for a moment?" I ask.

"Yes," he grunts as he hold his wound and sits on the ground. I sit across from him.

"Okay, this is hard to say, but I am just going to tell you." I take a breath, "I am a Mura."

Jax just stares at me with his emotionless face. I draw my eyebrows together as I watch Jax, who isn't moving an inch. He seems to be looking off into space for a moment as he communicates with Max. Jax then snaps out of his daze.

"Sorry, I just...did you say Mura?"

"Yes. I only found out a year ago."

"Why were you on earth for so long? Why were you in foster care?"

"I don't know. All I know is that I have been on earth for as long as I can remember without any family."

"Woah. Wait! Does that mean that you have wings?" Jax excitedly wonders.

"Yes, I do. I have only let them out once though and that was when I got them."

"On your eighteenth birthday?"

"No actually. I was in a coma for that, but my eyes did glow on my eighteenth birthday and afterwards while I was out."

"That makes sense. Your body wouldn't have had the strength to emerge yet, so it waited. That's amazing! Who would have thought that my best friend is a Mura?"

I chuckle at Jax, "Who would have thought."

"That explains how you were fine after Max hurt you and how you had that knife." I give him a confused look. "You probably have advanced healing, better than mine. Wait, why would you take so long to heal normally?"

"I would hold it back so no one would be suspicious."

"Ah. Well, the whole knife thing. It's a rare ability for a Mura to have. Only the powerful ones have it. The ability to conjure weapons."

"What?"

"Yeah, you must come from a powerful family or you were blessed or had a future set for you when you were born."

"That's a lot. You think I have a powerful family? Why would I be abandoned then?"

"I-I don't know, I'm sorry."

"I guess I should tell you that I have pyrokinesis."

"You can control fire!?"

"Yes, you do know that you can't start a fire with two random rocks right?"

"You can't?"

I roll my eyes, "No dumbass."

"Can I see your wings?" Jax asks.

I look around and listen intently to my surroundings. Using my senses, I conclude that no one is remotely close to us.

"Sure."

I stand up and focus on myself, on the power flowing through me and the magic in my wings. Soon, there is two white wings spread from my back with an orange hue. I stretch them out before folding them behind me.

"You...you are..." Jax stutters but can't seem to form a sentence.

"Yes, I'm a Mura. We have established this already."

"No, you are the Saviour," Jax states.

"What? I'm not a wolf Jax."

"The prophecy never said that the Saviour was a wolf. It said white with orange eyes. You have white wings with orange eyes. Mura's are known for their pure white wings, no hue around them. They also all have either blue eyes if they have a lower rank or gold eyes if they are a higher rank."

"So, Malakai had it right?" I whisper and Jax nods his head. "We should get you to the hospital."

I retract my wings and make sure my scent is still covered before helping Jax up and start walking in the same direction as before.

"Why couldn't it have just been a wolf," I mumble.

"I'm glad it's you. I know you will make the right decision."

The rest of the walk is in silence as we both try to wrap our heads around what has happened today.

***

It has Been week since I told Jax what I am. Nothing has changed between us and I am happy. My birthday is tomorrow and I made the huge mistake of letting it slip while Jax was in the room. He insists that we are going to go party to celebrate. I tell him no, but...well you know how Jax is. He is persistent and annoying. The worst combo.

Braden is boring as usual, so I make it my mission to stay away from him and the Blood Paw Pack. Seems to be working pretty well if I do say so myself. I still haven't figured out when they are leaving or when Jax and I are leaving. Hopefully soon.

"Make sure you get your beauty sleep princess, cause tomorrow, we party!" Jax dramatically says.

I groan and walk into the forest, "I don't want to go Jax. Just leave me be."

"Come on! It's your big two oh!" Jax whines.

I roll my eyes, "What's so special about it?"

"Well, you do know that your kind can find their Lamara at twenty, right?"

"Lamara?" I question.

"It's like a werewolf's mate. Werewolves can find their mates at sixteen, but every supernatural is different."

"How do you know so much?" I wonder.

"When I was young, my mom taught me about the different supernaturals and what they can do. It was her hobby to study supernatural, especially the rare ones like yourself. She always wanted to meet one of you."

"Wow. Is she still at Howling Stars?" I wonder.

Jax's expression goes grim and I instantly regret asking anymore on the subject.

"No, she died when I was nine."

"I am so sorry Jax, I didn't know," I apologize.

"It's alright. It is nice to talk about her sometimes," Jax smiles sadly. I nod.

"How about we go find something that I can wear tomorrow. I will let you pick," I suggest, trying to get him happy again.

Jax's eyes go light up like a child on Christmas morning, "Yes!"

I chuckle as he grabs my hand and begins to drag me though the forest. I stop in my tracks and cross my arms over my chest. Jax pouts at me.

"We have to train the packs first, then we will go chose my outfit. Deal?" I hold out my fist.

"Deal," Jax bumps my fist.

We turn to head in the direction of the training field. Once there, I see everyone from White Stone Pack, but I don't see anyone from Blood Paw Pack. This has been happening quite a bit over the past week. Come to think of it, I don't think they have even attended a single training. Huh.

"Alright everyone, start off with your warm up around the territory. Jax will be timing you and recording your times. Try to beat the time from yesterday. Go!" I shout at the crowd and they all start running.

I look at the time sheets and we have at least seven minutes before Sam gets back. He is the fastest in the pack which is understandable being the Alpha's son and all. I hear a swig snap and leaves crunch not far from the training field. I take a deep breath of the air and I can tell it's the Blood Paw Pack.

Braden and Cal emerge from the trees looking tired with two injured warriors behind them. What happened? I jog over to them and look over the guards to assess how badly they are injured.

"What happened to you guys?" I question.

"We were doing a walk of the perimeter, I was teaching Braden about different patrol techniques when six rogues came out of nowhere and attracted us. We were able to fight off and kill most of them," Cal explains.

I nod, "The warriors should be okay, you guys need to go to the hospital to get checked out though okay?" They both nod and head off towards the pack hospital.

"Are you all okay here?" Braden asks, looking at me worriedly.

"We're all fine. No rogues came here," I clarify and Braden nods with relief.

"Good, I don't want to see you get hurt," he tells me.

"I can handle myself just fine Braden. No need to worry about me," I assure.

He just nods and walks off into the pack house. Cal walks up to Jax and I.

"What's up with him? Does he usually act this weird?" I ask Cal.

"No, he doesn't. I'm not sure what's going on with him right now. Maybe he is homesick. He doesn't like being away from his mom for long." Cal replies and I nod. "The rogues did mention something. I think I need to bring it to Sam's attention. Where is he?"

"He should be done his run any minute now. Do you want me to pass along the message?" I offer.

Cal thinks for a moment before shaking his head, "No, I think this is a matter that I have to deliver myself."

Sam finishes and Cal pulls him aside. I know it's wrong to listen in and I shouldn't but I have this queasy feeling in the pit of my stomach that something is wrong.

"Sam, there is something I need to tell you in private," Cal tells him and they walk further away.

"What is it Cal? You look worried."

"I was at the border with Braden and my two warriors when six rogues attacked us. They said something and I want you to be honest with me."

"Of course, what's going on? Is everyone alright?"

"Everyone is fine, but....I don't even know if this is true. The thing is, if it is true then we may have a problem on our hands."

"Spit it out Cal," Sam instructs.

Cal takes a deep breath, "They said we need to hand over the Saviour or else they would start a war with us."
