Chilling In the Woods Like a Maniac
Ash
"A what now?" I ask the strange man.
"A Mura. They are a powerful being that are only seen in times of crisis. They are usually sent here for a purpose so that is why I am so confused. How do you not know who you are?"
"W-what? I have lived my whole life on earth. I wasn't 'sent' here by anyone. I was born here," I tell this crazy guy.
"Born here? Who are your parents?"
"I-I don't know. I was put up for adoption when I was little."
"Hmm," he hums. "Okay then, you are a curious little one but I have no reason to keep you any longer. Where are you headed off to?"
He's letting me go? Just like that? "My house. I went out for a little hike and I am on my way back."
He nods, "Make sure you learn to cover that scent of yours, you don't need the wrong person seeking you out."
I nod and walk around him towards my home. I sense him standing there, watching me walk away. I can't believe he just let me leave. Maybe, I take a deep breath, maybe I was wrong about werewolves. Maybe not all are bad.
Cover my scent? How the hell do I do that? Do I smell bad? As I walk, I focus on my nose and I take a deep breath. I can smell forest, moss, mud, water, and...something sweet. I can't even describe the scent. It's like chocolate, strawberries and flowers of all sorts. It's beautiful. Is that me? Is that what I smell like?
Let's think about this logically. Well, as logical as you can get with the supernatural. I radiate a scent of sorts and I need to stop it. Where does it come from? My skin probably. I focus on that, on what is making that scent, and then I cut it off. Well, more like bottle it up, put a cap on it so to speak.
I close my eyes and take another deep breath. All I can smell is earth and the forest. No sweet smell. I smile and start doing a little happy dance before I run into a tree. I fall back on my butt and let out a laugh at my stupidity. I shake my head and stand up, brushing the dirt from my pants. I pick up my duffle bag once more and continue my trek.
That's when I hear it. A person laughing. I turn around and glare in the direction of a boy laughing his ass off.
"What?" I snap at him but he just continues to laugh.
"You-you just ran into a tree. How-how did you not see it?" He manages to wheeze out between laughs.
I roll my eyes and turn back around to continue my walk. I can still hear his wheezing as I walk away from him. Who was that guy? Fucking weirdo. Wait.
"What are you doing out here in the woods?" I ask as I turn to face him. His face goes blank.
"I could ask you the same thing."
I roll my eyes, "I'm walking home, what's your excuse?"
"Uh..." he says as he thinks of a lie.
"Never mind then, just leave me alone," I grunt and continue walking. I don't want to wait around for him to make up some stupid excuse.
"Hold up. You smell like a..." he begins as he sniffs the air. Shit, did I not cover my scent properly? "Well, you smell faintly of a wolf. Other than that you smell like a human. What's a human like you doing hanging around with wolves?"
"Why don't I ask why a wolf like yourself is doing laughing at humans?" I take a wild guess that he is a wolf, hoping I am right.
"Ah, so you figured it out huh? What was it that gave me away, they sniffing thing or the whole chilling in the woods like a maniac?" He asks as he pretends to write down notes.
I snort out a short laugh at his silliness, "All of the above actually sir."
He breaks out in a million dollar smile and holds out his hand, "The name's Ajax Fira but everyone calls be Jax."
"Asherah Wilson, everyone calls me Ash though," I shake his hand.
"Want some company on your walk home?" He offers.
Why not? I mean if the wolves were scared of me at the last town, I should be okay to intimidate this guy if need be. However, I don't think that will be necessary. I get a good feeling about him.
"Sure, do you know which way Taya is?" I ask him as a test. I know which way it is, I just want him to tell me the right way.
"Ah, you just go one that way," he points behind me, "It is about another three days, give or take, by foot."
I nod, that is correct. "Alright then, let's get going."
"So," Jax starts, "Where are you coming from?"
"Haplen. I stayed there for a week before I decided it was time to leave."
There is silence. I look over to see that Ajax is no longer beside me. I turn around and he is staring at me with wide eyes and mouth open.
"What?" I wonder.
"Is that the wolf I smelt on you? One from the Blood Paw Pack?"
"The Blood Paw Pack?"
"Yeah, you know, the most feared pack in the world. Even compared to the Royal Pack."
"I mean, they thought I was just a human so they never told me about being wolves. I stayed with them in a huge house for a week until I decided to leave. I found out they were wolves when I left."
"What do you mean they 'thought' you were just a human? What are you?" He curiously questions.
"Oh uh, I meant that I already knew about wolves," I cover up.
"Oh okay, makes sense. How was it there? Was the Alpha and her son as scary as the stories say?"
"What are their names?"
"Well, I know the alpha is a girl and well respected amongst her pack, but I don't know their names."
"Oh, you probably mean Noctis and Braden. They aren't scary at all. Both were actually welcoming. I kind of told off Braden before I left though because I thought all werewolves were the same. I haven't had the best experience before them," I admit.
"What happened?"
"Everyone seems to think I'm this 'Saviour' and want me on their side. These werewolves kidnapped me and beat me to the brink of death. When they realized I wasn't healed, they left me in the middle of the woods for 'the wilds'? Not sure what that is. Then someone found me and I was taken to the hospital where I was in a coma for a year," I explain.
"That was you?" Jax asks shocked.
"Was what me?"
"You were the girl in the woods? I am the one who found you."
I stop walking and turn to look at Jax. I couldn't see the man's face who found me but now that I think about it, his voice is the same. I can tell he isn't lying either, don't ask how, I just do.
I hug Jax, "Thank you so much!"
He hugs me back, "Anytime. I'm so glad to hear that you pulled through. No one would tell me anything and since it wasn't a wolf hospital, I couldn't get them to tell me anything."
"I am so happy to meet you. I owe you everything," I smile.
"You owe me nothing. I am happy that I got to help you. Luckily I was kicked out of my pack that day. If not, I would have never found you."
I scrunch up my face in confusion, "What do you mean that you were kicked out?"
"I was kicked out of the Howling Stars Pack on that day. My brother, James, is still there and that wretched Alpha, Cassian."
My eyes widen in surprise. Cas? "I know them. When I left my house, James found me and brought me to Cassian. Cas went to my school before I went into a coma. He was trying to be friends with me."
"That bastard. Cassian tries to get people to like him in order to use them later on. Do you know why he was trying to be friends with you?"
"He thought I was this Saviour. When he found out I wasn't, he left me alone."
"Saviour? Now that is someone I haven't heard of in a while. Maybe that means the prophecy is coming true..." Jax trails off.
"What prophecy?" I wonder.
"Oh, it is about a someone who will be the protector of the supernatural and save them from the evil that lurks in the shadows. Everyone seems to be sure of them being a werewolf. A white wolf to be exact with orange eyes. That is who everyone is looking for and, as far as I know, no one has found them."
White fur and orange eyes. Maybe it is supposed to be white wings? Could that mean that I am this person? This...Saviour? Why did Kai not figure that out yet? He seemed to be insistent on me being eighteen, maybe that it why. My eyes never glowed until my eighteenth birthday according to John. That could be why.
"Oh no," I breathe out.
"What? Did I do something wrong?" Jax asks.
"No, no your didn't do anything wrong. I can't go home," I can't go home just to put John and Cress in danger.
"What? Why?"
"I just can't. I don't know where to go now," I tell Jax.
"Well, I could use some company if you would like to travel with me," Jax offers.
He is a wolf, so he should be able to handle himself. Right? Maybe for now I can go with him and then leave when it gets too dangerous. Good idea Ash. Mental high five.
"Okay, where are you headed to?" I ask.
"Anywhere and everywhere," he smiles. Ah, he is a nomad. A nomadic werewolf?
"Lead the way."
