Chapter 26
Maddy didn't bother to be cautious about making noise anymore. She took out her dagger and got ready for a fight with the rogues. As she flung the door to the room open, she was greeted with the sight of several unconscious bodies and five bulky rogues. In addition to being obviously outnumbered, the rogues looked like they could kill Maddy with a single punch. They were wearing five bulky, black masks and one of them was holding a container full of what Maddy guessed was gasoline. What surprised Maddy was that there were only five of them. If there were only five rogues, then why did Justin have to call everyone?
The rogue holding the container was pouring gasoline around the room while the others were leaning against a wall, relaxedly. On hearing the door slam open, the five rogues stared at Maddy but none of them made any moves.
Maddy hadn't expected the rogues to just stare at her. She had expected them to chase after her or even to escape the moment they saw her but she definitely didn't expect them to stare at her like she was an animal in the zoo. "Hey! Stop trying to light the restaurant on fire," she called out, feeling rather stupid. Of course, they weren't going to stop because she told them to but Maddy didn't know any other way to grab their attention.
"Go away human," one of the rogues sneered. "Don't interfere in matters that don't concern you."
Maddy didn't know if they didn't know that their boss wanted to kill her or whether they were so confident that the house would burn along with her that she was just a pesky insect to them. Whatever the case was, they didn't seem particularly bothered about the fact that Maddy wasn't unconscious.
Maddy didn't waste any more time in conversations. Aiming, she threw the dagger at the container of gasoline that the rogue was using. The dagger hit the container with a thud. It didn't exactly hit where Maddy had been aiming for. A centimeter to the right and it would have missed the container. The rogue carrying the container jerked back on hearing the thud and frowned at the dagger.
Maddy concentrated and opened her palm in front of her to call her dagger. The dagger flew towards her and as she had expected, it carried the gasoline container with it since it had gotten stuck to the container. Maddy pulled the dagger from the container and ran, careful not to spill any gasoline from the hole made by the dagger. This seemed to have sufficiently pissed off the rogues for they immediately shifted and ran after her.
"Shit!" Maddy cursed as she ran for her life. She should have thought of a plan before she pissed off the werewolves. Maddy doubted she could take on even one of the rogues as they seemed to be extremely strong, stronger than any of the rogues Maddy had encountered. Five of them could crush Maddy into pulp.
Maddy ran out of the room, forgetting the fact that the floor was covered with gasoline. Her legs skid, but instead of falling, she slid as though she was on ice. Maddy's face was full of terror as she stretched her arm out to maintain her balance. Skidding, Maddy reached the staff room. She didn't think twice.
She entered the room and immediately locked the door behind her. There was some sort of a cabinet near the door and Maddy pushed it towards the door for additional safety. She could hear the werewolves trying to break the door but she shut the noise out of her head.
She needed to make sure that the rogues' attention was on her. As long as she kept annoying and disturbing them, they would keep running behind her. Maddy knew that if they lit even a single match and threw it on the gasoline, the building would go up in flames but the werewolves didn't seem to be particularly smart so as long as their attention was on Maddy they would forget about lighting the building on fire, Maddy hoped.
Slowly, the sound of the rogues thudding against the door started receding. Scared that they would get bored and go back to their job of arson, Maddy taunted, "What happened? Gave up so easily?"
Maddy heard loud growls and then a loud sound of the door nearly breaking. The door wouldn't be protecting Maddy for long. In panic, Maddy looked around the room to see if there was anything that she could use to defend herself. Her eye caught on a fire extinguisher. Dropping her dagger, she grabbed it quickly. The extinguisher was lighter than she expected it to be. She fiddled with it for a few seconds, trying to figure out how to use it. When she couldn't figure it out, she quickly skimmed over the instruction written on the extinguisher. Meanwhile, the rogues kept on pushing against the door.
Maddy had just pulled the pin of the extinguisher when the rogues managed to get through the door, even with cabinet pushed against the door. Just as the rogues entered the room, Maddy sprayed them with the contents of the fire extinguisher. A whitish gas spewed out and covered the doorway just as the rogues entered. The rogues screamed and collapsed, and the places where the pressurized carbon dioxide directly hit them, they turned red and some of the rogues developed blisters as well.
Maddy waited for a few seconds to let the carbon dioxide diffuse into the atmosphere and then ran away, dodging the rogues, the cabinet and the broken door. As she passed through the door, she found it a little hard to breathe because of the amount of carbon dioxide in the air but that soon passed as she ran into the hallway.
Maddy went into the other room and looked around the room. The room was huge with several tables, beautifully laid out. The room would have been gorgeous but the several unconscious bodies on the floor ruined the sight. Whatever had knocked them out, had knocked them out hard. Even with their super healing, they were out cold. Maddy debated on what she should do. Dragging everyone out would take a lot of time, time that Maddy didn't have. The only way she could hurry up the process is to somehow wake them up.
That's when Maddy's eyes caught on a spray bottle kind of thing in the corner of the room. The bottle looked somewhat similar to the fire extinguisher Maddy had just ditched in the previous room and stood out from the backdrop of the restaurant. Maddy looked around and found a similar bottle in the other corner of the room. Maddy moved towards it, suspecting it had something to do with the unconscious werewolves. While inspecting the bottle, Maddy accidentally pressed the trigger. She was immediately hit with a wave of dizziness, similar to the one she felt downstairs. She looked at the bottle with renewed interest once the dizziness passed. Was that what made all the werewolves unconscious? At least that would explain why all the rogues were wearing masks.
Maddy however did not get the time to think anymore for at that time she heard several growls and found four pissed off rogues standing at the doorway to the room. She was screwed.
