Chapter 19
For the next hour, they spent their time with Lila, going through the various spells in the book. They placed the book on a table and sat all around it with Lila sitting on Maddy's shoulder which surprisingly didn't feel as uncomfortable as she thought it would feel. All the spells in the book were in Latin so it took some time to go through the book. Luckily, Lila was fluent in Latin and with her help and Google Translate's help they were able to go through all the spells in the book though it was a slow and tedious process.
On the very fifth page, they stumbled on a spell to find someone who has been lost in a crowd.
"We can use this, right?" Maddy asked.
Lila peered over Maddy's shoulder to look at the page and then shook her head. "This can be used only to find someone in a crowd," she said, laying stress on the word crowd. "That means it searches only a small area. Faeries could be anywhere so this won't work."
"Pay attention to the wording," Lila continued after a moment's pause. "Some spells may trick you into an unwanted situation."
All of them froze for a second. "What do you mean unwanted situations?" Jeremy asked with a frown.
"Say the spell states that it will produce light and you decide to use it without paying attention, but on using it, the spell produces a fire which does give out light but unless you are aware of it, you could burn down a room accidentally."
Maddy gulped. Burning down something accidentally sounded like something she would do. "How do we know which spells to use?"
"Read the entire page," she said simply. "Don't skip any lines that are mentioned in the book about a certain spell or that could lead to you burning down the entire library."
After that, the process of going through the book slowed down even more. Whenever they stumbled upon a spell that they thought they could use, they would translate the entire page and then go through it two or three times to make sure it was okay to use the spell.
Most of the spells in the book were useful for only doing mundane stuff like cleaning up any room in a minute.
"Write that one down, write that down," Alexa demanded the moment her eyes landed on it. "It could save my life."
Most of them just required you to pronounce some words but a few complex spells mentioned in the end of the book required certain ingredients to make a potion along with an incantation. Maddy was relieved to see that the ingredients weren't things like a lizard's eggs and a frog's eye but things like different herbs along with many ingredients that Maddy hadn't heard of. They were probably magical items that could only be found in the Faerie Realm.
The more they went through the book, the more disheartened they became. Most of the spells weren't helpful for tracking a faerie as they only helped in doing household work. There were a few spells that helped in finding non-living things which were once again, not useful. Maddy had written down all the spells that were about finding objects, living or non-living on a piece of paper just in case they could figure out a way to use them to find a faerie. After going through the entire book and finding nothing, they all looked tired and frustrated.
"So much for finding faeries," Xander grumbled.
"Clearly we are not going anywhere with this," Jeremy said. "Maybe we should try switching plans."
"The only way to help mom is to find a faerie and have her identify the spell or get Bruce to confess what spell he used on her. So ,maybe we can track Bruce down?"
Maddy glanced at the book containing faerie spells. "That brings us back to the same problem. How do we track Bruce down?"
Alexa slumped back on the chair she was sitting on. "That's it. I can't do this. My brain is hurting."
"If we are able to capture Bruce not only can we save mom, but we can also end the war. Without Bruce, the rogues won't try anything reckless and we can settle a truce with them," Xander mused out loud, pointedly ignoring Alexa.
"Maybe we can track an object that we know they will have on them," Jeremy said after some time. "Like a weapon or something."
"Like tooth-necklace lady's necklace," Maddy said immediately. "She always wears it around her neck and wherever she is, Bruce should be there, right?"
"That could work," Leia said as she scanned the sheet where Maddy written down the spells and then tapped on one spell. "We could use this spell. You need a map and a distinct image of the object in your mind."
They went through all the spells and decided that the spell Leia had pointed out was the best suited for their situation. After that, they started preparing for their expedition. Alexa and Xander managed to convince their dad to let them go out for a small trip the next day. That way they wouldn't need to sneak out like the time they had unsuccessfully tried to sneak out of the pack and go to India.
That night, Maddy went to sleep early despite the fact that she wasn't sleepy. Tomorrow was going to be one hell of an adventure and the last thing Maddy needed was to be sleepy throughout the day.
