Chapter 17

The rest of the night went by way too fast and Maddy loved every single moment of it. The pack ran together and this time Maddy led them. She hadn't shifted into a wolf but even in the human form, she was able to run almost as fast as a werewolf, which was saying something. Maddy had never felt something quite like it. Running that fast, Maddy felt like she felt like she had left all her worries behind and was free. Of course, she had stumbled a million times because she was clumsy as it is and this new werewolf speed was something she wasn't really used to but the pack patiently waited for her to get up and continue.

When Maddy woke up the next day, the first thing that she noticed was that she was feeling extremely tired. It was then that she registered that she was no longer able to smell each and everything clearly like she had been able to the night before. Panicking, she got ready and tried to run outside as fast as she had been able to the night before, but failed miserably.

Maddy tried multiple times, refusing to believe that she lost all her werewolf abilities. She had joined the pack yesterday and her werewolf side had merged with her human side. Then, what had gone wrong? Why did she no longer have those abilities?

'Where are you?' Leia spoke in Maddy's mind making her jump.

Maddy returned to her room with more questions in her head. She couldn't run as fast as a werewolf or sense things as clearly but she was able to talk to other pack members through the packlink. How was that even possible? It was like her human side chose to retain certain abilities and chose to ditch the other.

Maddy wanted to ask Leia about her situation but she found Leia talking to Jeremy. Deciding to give them some alone time, Maddy left, thinking that she would ask Leia later but Leia had already seen Maddy and called her over. Maddy told them about her situation.

She couldn't believe that her powers had disappeared all of a sudden. It wasn't fair. After all the help she rendered to the werewolves, the least fate could do was give her some of their powers. Snatching it away after a few hours was just cruel.

"Calm down," Leia said seeing Maddy's miserable expression.

"Your werewolf-y powers weren't stolen after a few hours of you using it," Maddy said grumpily.

"That's normal," Jeremy said reassuring her. "Werewolf speed isn't something that is natural exactly. Well, we get it from birth so I guess you could call it natural, but you don't get it naturally. I mean..."

Jeremy trailed off for a second, trying to find the correct word to use and then said, "You get the idea."

Maddy stared at him blankly. "I don't."

Jeremy opened his mouth to explain it but decided that Leia would be able to do it better so he glanced at her.

"It is like weight-lifting. Without practice you won't be able to do it but with practice it will become easier. We have been practicing it for our life so it has become like second nature."

"So, I still have those powers?" Maddy asked.

"I mean, I think so but with you, I don't know. We won't find out until you have some training."

"Oh," Maddy said and after a moment asked, ""So, you guys don't always have your werewolf abilities?"

"Can you imagine hearing everything from the sound of your own footsteps to the sound of your own heartbeat all the time?" Jeremy asked.

"Sounds exhausting," Maddy admitted.

That was very interesting. So, the werewolves could tap into their abilities whenever they wanted. That wasn't something Maddy had heard of before but now that she thought about it, it was much reasonable to tap into your abilities when you wanted. And Maddy would be able to do it too with practice. That thought made Maddy shiver with excitement.

At that moment Alexa came running towards them. "Where's Xander?" she asked. "I have a plan and I think it might work."

"For?"

"Waking mom up," Alexa said. "Bruce has not attacked recently so we are sitting around waiting for his next move, but instead of that we should be concentrating on my mom. She has been in a coma for a week and a half."

"What plan?" Maddy asked. Things were getting boring and Maddy was dying to do something. Bruce completely disappeared along with his rogues. The Werewolf Council was trying to track him but still didn't have any pointers as to where Bruce is or what Bruce's next plan of action will be.

The matefinder didn't have any other jobs for them either. She had announced that she would need to leave for a few days. The change in the timeline had not only affected the werewolves but all the humans in the world and in order to make things right show would need to travel a lot. Justin tried asking her to stay but the matefinder insisted on going.

"I need you all to listen to me and then make comments," Alexa said. "No interrupting me in middle."

Everyone nodded cautiously. Maddy knew what everyone was thinking. If Alexa wanted them not to make comments, her plan probably involved something illegal.

"So, we know that to wake Diana up we needed a faerie's help to identify the spell and all that, right?"

"You want me to call Ella?" Maddy guessed.

"No interrupting," Alexa reminded. "If you know a way of a way to call Ella without going back to Cubbon Park, we could try it. I think that we can all collectively agree that we don't want to go the Cubbon Park if there is no other option"

"Then what should we do?" Leia asked.

"That is what I was thinking and then it occurred to me, even though India is where the Faerie Realm is, there must be faeries spread out all over the world just like how California is the stronghold of the Amalthea Pack but we have werewolves in other places as well. If we are able to come in contact with any faerie, we can make a deal with the faerie and then they can help and if the faerie doesn't agree, then we kidnap them!"

"What is it with you two and kidnapping?" Jeremy asked as he pointed at Maddy and Alexa. "We are not kidnapping anybody."

Alexa made a face. "You think a faerie would willingly help us? If kidnapping is the only way to help mom, I don't see why we shouldn't do that."

"First, how are we going to find the faerie?" Leia asked, diverting the topic from the banter that was about to break out between Jeremy and Alexa.

"I don't know," Alexa said. "Ask Lila if there is any particular coffee shop the faeries are attached to or something?"

When she saw all the looks the others were giving, she shrugged. "What? Don't look at me like that. I said I had a plan, not a fully formed plan with no loopholes."

For the next thirty minutes they discussed on the various ways to find faeries. At the end it was decided that Lila and the books in both the magical and non-magical library were their best bet. Maddy didn't think that Lila could help them much on this because she had been stuck in the library for a long, long time. Maddy wouldn't be surprised if Lila personally knew Jesus or something. She was that old although in the faerie sense she wasn't old at all but Lila could have some important information about faeries that could help them so Maddy wasn't ruling her out yet. They decided that they would search for the next week and if they still weren't able to gather any information, they would come up with a new plan.
