Chapter 11

"So, how do we change things back to normal?" Maddy asked the matefinder as they left the office.

For once, the matefinder looked clueless. " I am not sure but I guess I need to make sure that all the major events that happened that evening, need to take place."

"How much could have happened in one evening?" Alexa asked.

The matefinder pursed her lips. "Let's see... The rogues attacked, someone important from the other side was killed, your dad fractured his leg and you found out some crucial information which is necessary for the future."

Everyone was silent for a second.

"Well, that was... eventful," Alexa said pausing in the middle to search the right word.

Maddy was kind of glad that the attack and all that hadn't taken place. Not that she wanted to mess with time or anything but she did need a beak yesterday. Not to mention the number of werewolves who would have gotten injured had the rogues attacked yesterday.

"At least it is only one evening," Xander said.

"Actually..." the matefinder began and everyone groaned. "This changes quite a few things. It affects a chain of reactions and events, like a domino falling. If the first domino doesn't fall, the dominoes in front of it won't fall and those events wouldn't have taken place."

"Where do we start?" Maddy asked.

"You four," the matefinder said as she pointed to everyone except Maddy. "Need to go get me a list of all the pack members in your pack and get a picture of each of the pack members."

"Why would you need that?" Leia asked.

"In the attack, a few of your pack members get killed. I need to figure out who and all were the people who get killed."

"Why do you need their pictures?"

"I only know how they look from my visions. Only their names won't help me in any way. I need to see their faces to recognize them. You've got any other questions?"

"What are you going to do to them once you get to know who they are?" Xander asked with wary eyes. "If you think that I am going to give you the names of my pack members for you to kill them, you're wrong."

The matefinder rolled her eyes. "Of course, not. I'm not that heartless. Those people cannot get involved in anything related to Bruce. As I said before, if the main important events are taken care of, time should adjust itself to the smaller changes. As long as they don't participate in anything major now, they'll be fine."

The others left and then Maddy turned to the matefinder. "So," she said, stretching the 'o' as she rubbed her hands together. "What task do you have for me? Do I get to go on a secret mission cause in that case, I want to change my dress to something black and mysterious."

The matefinder smiled. "That will not be needed. Follow me."

Curious, Maddy followed her. The matefinder led her to a clearing among the trees, near the border of the pack. From the clearing, Maddy could see the old shed where Alexa and Jeremy had hidden the car when they had planned to sneak away to India.

"What am I supposed to do here?" Maddy asked, confused. She looked around. All she could see was trees and unless something happened to the trees in the alternate past, Maddy couldn't see what she had to do.

"I need you to concentrate," the matefinder said as she stared at Maddy.

Maddy nodded and stared at the matefinder wondering what was going on in her head. The matefinder had weird ways of giving clues. The last time, Maddy had to play jumbled words in order to figure out where Leia was being kept after she got smuggled into another country which sounds extremely ridiculous but was actually very helpful. Without them playing jumbled words, they probably never would have gotten Leia back.

Maddy was still thinking about their adventure in India when all of a sudden, the matefinder lunged at Maddy. Maddy gave out a small shriek at the sudden movement and stumbled back. The matefinder wrapped her hand around Maddy's neck and picked her up like she weighed nothing. Maddy's head slammed against a tree as she blacked out for a second because of the hit.

"What are you doing?" Maddy managed to croak out. She couldn't breathe properly and being picked up like a rag doll wasn't the ideal way to have a conversation. The matefinder was the third person to have picked her up like that. Maddy didn't know why the werewolves had collectively decided to treat her like a rag doll, but it needed to stop soon.

"You are supposed to die in the rogue attack," the matefinder said calmly.

Maddy's eyes widened and she reflexively clawed at the matefinder's hands as she tried to remove the matefinder's hands. When that didn't work, Maddy kicked the matefinder using her legs which were dangling in the air. Her foot connected with the matefinder's abdomen and she staggered back but didn't loosen grip on Maddy's throat. By then black spots were dancing in front of Maddy's eyes. Maddy reached out for her dagger. She didn't really want to harm the matefinder but the matefinder gave her no choice.

"You looking for this?" the matefinder asked as held Maddy's dagger.

Maddy cursed inside her head. She had forgotten that the matefinder wasn't affected by silver just like her. In fact, the dagger had actually been given to Maddy by the matefinder so the weapon was completely harmless against the matefinder. In fact, the matefinder was probably better at wielding the dagger than she was.

Maddy kicked out with her legs two or three more times but her kicks were pathetically weak. If Maddy wasn't concentrating so hard on trying to breathe, she would have been embarrassed. After defeating rogues and travelling halfway around the world to get her best friend back, she died after being hung like a rag doll by a woman who was obsessed with time.

With all the effort Maddy could muster, Maddy kicked out one last time, aiming at the matefinder's abdomen. The blow made the matefinder almost lose control of her grip. Almost.

The last thing Maddy saw before she blacked out completely was the matefinder's smug smile.
