Chapter 10
Surprisingly, Justin agreed to invite the matefinder over without a seconds' hesitation. The way that the others had reacted to Maddy's proposal, Maddy has expected Justin to refuse to invite the matefinder over but Justin seemed to be determined to catch Bruce in whichever way possible and then heal Diana.
10 o'clock the next day, found Maddy in the open courtyard, waiting for Justin to do the ritual to call upon the matefinder. The pack members who were interested in seeing the ritual had gathered as well although the number of people who had gathered was much less than the number of people who had gathered the first time the matefinder had been called upon. In a span of three months, the matefinder had visited multiple number of times. The matefinder was no longer as interesting as she was before.
"You've got to figure out a better way to call upon the matefinder," Maddy said as the Alpha performed the ritual. "What happened to the good old phone call?"
"I doubt the matefinder has a phone," Jeremy whispered.
"Of course, she has a phone," Alexa scoffed. "Have you seen her Instagram? She is insta famous and her feed is full of beautiful pictures from all across the world which is totally not fair since she has a teleporting house and I don't."
Jeremy shook his head. "I'm not even going to ask you how you know all this."
Any further conversation was stopped by the appearance of the matefinder's house. The matefinder opened her door and stepped outside with a frown on her face. "What happened?" she asked.
"We wanted to invite you to stay in the Amalthea Pack headquarters for some time. You've helped us a lot in the past few months and although a mere invitation isn't a big enough thank you, we wanted to invite you over for a week or more," Justin said formally.
The matefinder froze. "What did you say?"
Justin hesitated and then responded. "We wanted you to stay here at the pack headquarters for a week or more."
The matefinder looked confused at first and then her expression turned to panic. Maddy shifted uncomfortably. Till date she had never seen the matefinder panic. The matefinder wasn't supposed to panic. She knew the future so what was there to be panicked about? Besides, Justin had merely invited her over. Why was she panicking over that?
"Can't be," the matefinder whispered as she paced back and forth.
Seeing the matefinder panicking, everyone who had assembled to see the ritual, started panicking. Justin quickly took control of the situation. He quickly escorted the matefinder to his office. Slowly the crowd also dispersed although they did seem uneasy. Maddy and the others followed Justin into his office.
"I don't suppose I can ask you five to wait outside while I talk to the matefinder?" Justin asked when he saw them approaching. All of them shook their head and Justin let them in without another word.
"What happened?" Justin asked the matefinder once he closed the door to his office.
The matefinder was sitting on a chair and was tapping her foot on the floor impatiently. She was biting her lip and seemed to be deep in thought. When the Alpha spoke to her, the matefinder snapped out of her thoughts.
"No. You tell me what happened after I dropped you here from London," she said. "Give me a detailed explanation of exactly what happened. Don't miss anything."
After a moments' pause, Justin started narrating exactly what they all did the day before. When he reached the part where Maddy and the others were watching television, the matefinder interrupted him. "Are you sure you watched television?"
"Yeah," Xander said.
"A hundred percent sure?"
This made everyone confused and even more uncomfortable. Of course, they were sure. Why was the matefinder acting so weirdly?
"What is the problem?" Justin asked.
"This wasn't supposed to happen," the matefinder said in a daze.
"What do you mean by this wasn't supposed to happen?"
"Something has changed. What I saw in my vision was completely different. This is not how the future takes place," the matefinder said with panic.
"What?" Justin said with shock.
By the panic in everyone's face, Maddy guessed that it wasn't a common, everyday thing. Just great! Yet one more problem added to Maddy's never ending list. All Maddy asked for was one peaceful evening of binge watching The Flash with her friends but now suddenly the future has changed, they were never supposed to have the peaceful evening and now not even the matefinder knew what to do.
Maddy remembered what the matefinder had told her the day Maddy had accused her of being the reason why Diana was in a coma. 'If you mess with time, time will find a way to mess with you' was what the matefinder has said before. All Maddy hoped for was that she hadn't accidently messed with the timeline. She had enough on her plate as it is, she didn't need another thing added to it.
The matefinder stood up abruptly. "I'm sorry. As much as I would like to accept your invite, I can't. I have to make things right before it is too late."
Maddy glanced at the others. If what the matefinder was right, then they were all in big trouble. If time itself started messing with people, life would get a hundred times harder for everyone and as time passed, more wrong decisions would be made and the harder it would be to bring things back to how it was supposed to be.
"We could help you," Maddy blurted out. "We don't have any clue as to Bruce's whereabouts or his next plan so it isn't like we have anything to do. Instead, we can help you get things back to place. I for one, don't want my life to start becoming even more messed up."
One by one, everyone murmured an agreement. "The invitation remains. You can stay here and we'll together figure out how to correct things."
The matefinder brightened up. "Thank you," she said with a small smile. "That was very kind of you. Of all of you."
Justin clasped his hand together. "So, it is decided then. We help you get things back together and you can stay here until everything is back to normal."
