Three days had passed since Kye and the trackers had left. I spent them researching ways to possibly bring Knox out of this magically induced coma.
I sat at the big red oak desk in the Alphas Office reading a book I found in the library on the history of witches. It so far had offered nothing in the way of a cure. I felt Kye push in on the mind link.
"Give me good news" I said.
"We've found the rouges scent again and tracked it for miles to the base of the mountains, but then it disappeared. " he sounded defeated and tired.
"I think she is using magic to keep us chasing dead ends, Ebony. Everytime we catch the scent it leads us somewhere and then it just dissappears. Ive never not been able to keep trackbof a scent."
Of course she is using magic to keep us running in circles. I mentally smacked myself in the forehead. How could I make such an amateur mistake. I was so fueled by rage and a desire for revenge that I forgot that we were dealing with a different kind of enemy. I sent my Gamma and the pack on a wild goose chase.
"Kye, I'm sorry. I should've thought about that before I sent you guys out there. Turn back and come home, when you get here we need to sit down and really think about our next move. " I said apologetically.
I really needed to get my shit together and get it together fast. If I was going to find this witch and save the Alpha I was going to have to think outside of the box.
"What if on the way back I stop by the Blackstone Coven, maybe shake them down and see if they know who may have done this?" Kye asked.
Werewolves and Witches aren't necessarily natural enemies like Werewolves and Vampires, but Witches absolutely could not be trusted. The Blackstone Witches were a coven of in the mountains that our pack occasionally did business with.
We traded our protection against Vampires in exchange for their help with things like herbs and healing potions. Our interactions together were limited and strictly business, and even though it was a long shot, maybe they could prove to be helpful.
"That's a great idea Kye. Be careful though. Don't go in there guns blazing, be tactful. We very well may need there help before this is over." I said.
Knox would be really pissed if he woke up and fpund out that I had put him and the Blood Wolf Pack in the debt of Witches, but it was my only play then so be it. I was willing to pay any cost to find the witch that did this and bring Knox back.
I closed the book infront of me and slid it to the side of the desk. I had been neglecting doing actual work since taking over as the acting Alpha. The ridiculous amount of paperwork piled on the far side of the desk was a testament to that.
I honestly don't know how he handles all of the mundane day to day of running a pack. Personally I think being the Beta is far more exciting, but today I'll pretend that this is my job.
After what seemed like hours of signing papers and going through the packs monthly expense report I was relieved when Kye finally mind linked me.
"We just met with Heleana. She says she wants to see him." Kye said with caution in his voice.
"What? Why?" I asked.
"She said she can't help us if she doesn't know what we are dealing with."
"Do you trust her?" I know I certainly didn't.
"I don't know Ebony. But she was expecting us. She said something about a bird had told her that we would be coming and that she needed to help us."
"A bird told her?" I laughed.
"You know how these Witches are, they're kind of weird. Do you want me to bring her back with us or not? I'm reasy to get the hell out of here, this place gives me the creeps." I could hear the paranoia lacing Kye's tone.
Heleana had never given me a reason to not trust her, but at the same time I didn't have any reason to trust her. I didn't like the idea of making this call alone. Bringing a witch onto pack lands was absolutely unheard of. Witches aren't as strong or fast as werewolves, but if they get the chance to conjure their magic, we are powerless.
I sat there for a moment contemplating the situation. This could be my only shot at helping the Alpha, but I could also be opening my entire pack up to an attack.
"Kye, bring her." I said quickly so I couldn't change my mind.
"You sure, Boss?"
"Not really, but we need all the help we can get. Make it clear that she comes alone. I'll meet tou at the border when you get here. She doesn't cross until I talk to her in person." I ordered.
I had a bad feeling about this. A really bad feeling. This was so not normal.
