Chapter 19

Kams pov

He would much rather be anywhere else. Anywhere but in a car with Addison. Anywhere but with Addison. Period.
She was not good news. Wherever she was, there was trouble.
Troubles attracted to me.
That's what she had said, he was starting to believe it.
She sniffs and he steals a glance her way, she wasn't crying. Wasn't talking his ear off. Was just sitting there, staring out the window, watching the trees whizz by.
"Sorry about your house Addison."
"You didn't destroy it so you shouldn't be the one apologizing." She says.
"That doesn't make me any less sorry. It's not fair whats happening to you. Or to your family."
"Life isn't fair. You of all people should know that, with your job and all."
"I do know that life isn't fair and that-."He takes a corner too fast and he tightens his grip on the steering wheel, "what happens to most people isn't fair. Even that doesn't make me feel any less sorry for the people that suffer and struggle because of the evil in the world. It seems it only gets worse as time goes on."
Addison shrugs her slender shoulders, "It's still not your fault so don't waste your breath apologizing about it."
"You're difficult, you know that?" He shoots back. Trying to ruffle her feathers a little, trying to get her to speak more than a couple words to him. She was a chatter box and the fact that she wasn't talking nonstop concerned him a lot. A lot more than he wanted to admit.
"I've been told." She shoots him a smile, the action making her look less haunted, less fragile.
"You don't think you should work on it?"
"It's crossed my mind a time or two but I've decided the right people will stick around even if I am difficult."
He didn't have anything to say to that. She was right, of course she was. She didn't seem like the type of person to speak her mind openly and not know what she was talking about.
He turns left, the vehicle moving smoothly. The silence of the vehicle putting him on edge. He was never one for idle conversation, he was barely one for conversation at all but somehow sitting in a silent car with Addison seemed too wrong.
Her eye was still swollen, the edges of the bruise nearly black. Not nearly as bad as it had been a little bit ago, but still bad nonetheless.
"Where are we going?" Addisons question echoed through the car.
  "Somewhere safe."
"Which could be just about anywhere so that wasn't very helpful." She says. Leaning her head against the window.
"True. We've got a safe house a few miles away. We'll head there and I'll call in some agents to sit with you while I continue the search for Joy."
She shot up, her body so tense he was sure she'd fall over. "I'm not sitting in a safe house while you search for my daughter." She turns her head towards him, her eyes dark.
"It's not that big of a deal Addy, I can't worry about your safety and do my job thoroughly. If you're in the safe house I won't have to worry about you and I can put all my attention of finding Joy."
"Take me with you and then you'll know I'm safe with you and we can focus our attention on Joy together."
Together?
He didn't do together. Not anymore. Not ever again.
He planned on telling her that but she shoots him a look so filled with hope that he doesn't have the heart to say it.
"This is dangerous territory, Addy." He mutters as he pulls into the safe house driveway.
She just smiles, a soft pretty smile that turned her into a happy healthy woman. No guilt, no regrets, no sadness overshadowing her vibrant eyes. A woman full of happiness and joy. A woman he'd very much like to get to know.
Another thing he shouldn't be thinking about. Another thing that he was never going to do again.
Never again.
The words echoes hollowly in his head. He'd loved his life by those words for so long, he didn't know how to do anything but... not do them.
