Chapter Two
The steady and familiar beep of her heart beat brought Grace out of her sleep.
Bright light shone in from a window to her side. She scrunched her eyes shut before blinking slowly to help her eyes adjust to the light. Her head pounding a painful beat in her head.
Looking around she saw she was in what looked like a cottage, with a chair in the corner, a shelf with a blanket shoved hastily on it and a small table with coffee mugs littered on top. She would have thought she was in someone's home were it not for the large hospital bed and machinery that had been strapped to her.
Where am I? She wondered, glancing out the window only to find a view of trees.
What happened? Flashes ran thorough her mind. The heart monitor beating faster as she began to remember. But someone had saved her. She was safe.
The door to her room swung open and in strode three men and a woman.
Grace sat up slowly, staring wide eyed at the people in from of her, her gaze falling on a rugged and wild looking man who had placed himself in the corner, his hands squeezing the back of the chair until his knuckles turned white. Meeting his intense gaze she sucked in a sharp breath. Brown eyes.
"Hi, my name is Doctor Harding- can you tell us your name?"
She dragged her gaze away from Brown Eyes and met the sympathetic gaze of the Doctor. He was stood at the foot her bed, clipboard in hand.
"Grace, Grace Jackson." Her throat was sore and scratchy- as though she hadn't used it in a while. "How long have I been out?"
"Just over a week- had us all a little scared!" The woman said, handing her a glass of water. "Here darling, you must be thirsty."
Grace accepted the water, chugging it down.
"What's the damage Doc?" She asked, noticing the bandages wrapped around her knees and ribs. "Did my ribs come out again?"
"Yes, I'm afraid so. Both your knees were dislocated and all of your knuckles on your right hand. You have extensive bruising but it's your head that got me worried. You've taken a nasty hit, so now you're awake you'll stay here for a few days so I can assess you better." He smiled kindly before glancing to Brown Eyes- whose gaze hadn't left her.
The Doctor turned to the other man who was stood by the door, quietly assessing the situation.
"Go and finish reading her records Doctor, we'll fill her in on the rest." The man said, his voice kind and strong.
The doctor nodded. "I got you're medical records from your Doctor at the city hospital, when I saw your medical band I wanted to know what I was dealing with- your case is by far the most complicated I have ever worked on."
"I hear that a lot." She replied, smiling sadly.
"I'll be honest, I don't know a lot about it, but I have contacted your doctors to make sure I can provide you the best care I can. Your safe here, I can promise you that."
After a nod of thanks, the doctor left the door shut behind him. Glancing around her, she noticed the uncomfortable shuffling of the woman and the stare off between the Brown Eyes and the man in front of her.
An unsettling feeling began to fall over her as she realised the situation she was now in. Sure there was a Doctor, who had treated her wounds and had access to her medical records but that was about it where hospitals are concerned. For one, she was in a room in a cottage in the middle of a forest and the other people in the room were definitely not nurses.
"I'm not in a hospital am I." she said, breaking the tension in the room.
The woman sat down on the edge of her bed. "Not the sort of hospital I am sure you are used to. You are in our- Village- hospital." She smiled reassuringly but Grace knew something about that statement was off.
Being alone in her illness for so long had made her question everyone around her growing up. Anxiety would do that to a person. She had developed quite the knack for telling when people were lying to her- or not telling her the whole truth.
"You're lying." Grace said, knowing she was right when the woman's eyes grew wide with what she could only presume as fear.
"Not entirely." The man by the door said. "But for now I think it is best that you rest. We have been very worried about you not waking up, we need our rest too- after all, were only human."
The man chuckled as though he had said something funny, Brown eyes gaze leaving hers for a fraction of a second to look at the man.
They were lying again, and she hated it when people lied to her. Though why he would he lie about them needing rest she didn't know. They wouldn't lie unless they just wanted to leave her alone- but she didn't know them, they could leave without offending her.
She gasped, her eyes wide as she figured out what was so funny to the man about his statement.
"You aren't human?!" Grace said, startled and shocked gazes greeting her as she looked around the room once more. This wasn't the dark ages, she knew along with everyone else who weren't afraid to acknowledge the truth that there were 'others' who shared this earth with them. Though no one had ever actually met them- and lived to tell the tale.
"How did you do that?" The man said slowly, walking towards her his eyes narrowing.
"Why won't you answer me?" Grace said, shrinking back into her bed as the man walked closer.
She didn't have time to blink as Brown Eyes shot across the room, his hand reaching out stopping the man from coming any closer.
"No further, you're scaring her." His voice was firm, commanding. Grace couldn't help but stare up at him. The small scars that ran up and down his cheek, the way his eyes held their focus on the man with a determination she had never witnessed before.
The man looked between her and Brown eyes before shaking his head and moving backwards, his hands up in the air.
"I wouldn't hurt her, you know I wouldn't. I just want to know how she knows when we're lying, that's all." He said, the woman who handed her the glass of water going to stand by his side.
"I have been in and out of foster care and hospitals my entire life, knowing when someone is lying to me has become a skill of mine. Quite useful when there is no one else around to protect me but myself." She said, volunteering the information. The powerful stature of the man in front of her was something she did not want to cross.
Brown eyes looked down at her, their gazes locking. Pain. She was sure she saw it flicker in his eyes. Aware of the other people in the room still looking at her she tore her gaze away from his.
"I am sure you would like to know what is going on, though It is not my place to tell you everything, I can fill you in. You are safe here, Grace." The woman said gently.
"I have a headache, this is all too much for me to take in right now. I think I will just go to sleep and see if everything is still the same when I wake up. Hopefully I'm just dreaming." Grace said, her head falling back onto the pillow, scrunching her eyes up to try and block everyone in the room from her mind.
"Of course, I will be back when you wake up. I know you have lots of questions. Get some rest now." The woman said. "Come on, let's leave her be."
Thinking everyone had left the room, Grace opened her eyes, only to see that Brown eyes was still stood watching her from the end of her bed.
"If I wasn't so confused and tired, I would tell you that you're being creepy." She said, smiling.
She watched as his gaze went down to her lips, his brows furrowing as they took in her smile.
"I will leave you to sleep." He said curtly. Turning around abruptly before leaving her room.
Settling back down into the bed she shut her eyes. Everything was completely confusing. She was in a strange hospital- that looked nothing like a hospital. Around strange people who were lying about being human, and the most handsome man she had ever laid eyes on who couldn't keep his eyes off of her. Yet she didn't feel scared or worried. In fact she felt as if right now, this was exactly where she was meant to be. And she didn't like it.
