IV.
James's POV
He was around maybe six feet tall. Compared to my height, that was still pretty short, but much taller than what I had originally assumed.
His face looked unimaginably gentle... but what attracted me and almost frightened me all at once, were his eyes. They were the palest blueish grey I'd ever seen, almost as if they could get lost in the whites of his eyes...
Marginally different than Sarah's hazel.
I couldn't see too well, but the intensity of his gaze took me by surprise. If looks could kill, his eyes had already laid me out on a morticians table and cut my living body open.
He had dark permanent bags that accompanied them, which made it look as if sleep hadn't found him in millenniums.
I wasn't even sure how to explain the curly mop he had on his head. It was a gorgeous brown with golden tints reflective against the precinct lights, and though the hair didn't look tangled, it did however look like a tedious process to comb through.
He probably never had brushed it.
"Your files." He spoke as he handed the papers to Sarah. His voice held no emotion whatsoever. It sent a ghostly shiver down my spine.
He was definitely the type of guys we arrested.
"Thank you Killian." Sarah replied. "Killian, this is James. James, meet my brother Killian."
"Hi Killian." I smiled. There was something that flashed across his face. I didn't have nearly enough time to figure out what he might have been thinking, because just as soon as it came, it was gone.
All he did instead was give me a courteous nod.
"The tea is on the counter over there." Sarah pointed to the side table against the Chief's office where we kept the coffee pots.
He began making a cup for himself.
I wasn't sure why, but everything he did started to fascinate me. It was every fine detail down to how he made his tea. He placed the dampened tea bag onto the plastic spoon and wrapped the string around it, before pushing it up against the cup to squeeze the remaining liquid out.
"I took a look at the file you left for me."
"You mean the one I left on the counter." Sarah clarified. Killian shrugged.
"Did you leave it because you forgot it, or did you leave it because you unconsciously knew you wanted me to look it over?"
I glanced back at Sarah. She was biting her lip. It was something she did when she was deep in thought.
"You felt something was off about China shop owner you interviewed a few weeks back, didn't you?" Killian continued.
"Mr. Weng?" I asked. Killian finally turned to face us with a cup of tea in his hand.
"I saw your notes, Sarah. I'ts deductive reasoning. If your intuition is telling you something doesn't feel right, then look over the facts again. Find the misalignment and stop settling on a picture perfect case." He stated.
I couldn't believe how much he sounded like a detective. By his words, you wouldn't be able to tell who the older sibling was. A smile spread across my lips as he glanced at me. He quickly averted his gaze.
"We'll do that first thing in the morning. I think we can all agree its fine time to get home." Sarah announced. She started to pack her things. "What vehicle did you take?"
"I rode your bike. It's pretty nice outside actually. I don't mind riding it back. Plus, it would be a tight squeeze with all the random shit you piled in your car earlier today for the children's donation thing."
Sarah nodded to her brother as we started slipping case files back in our locked drawers.
Once we had finally made it outside, all three of us were welcomed by some serious rain storms.
"Shit!" We all groaned, trying to make our way to the vehicles. Sarah looked more alarmed than ever when KIllian moved to get on his bike. "Dont be ridiculous, Killian! Youre not riding in this!" She called out over the storm.
Killian's hair had began to dampen. His skin looked even paler than before as the heavy rain soaked his clothing.
"There's no space in your car!" He called back out.
Without even thinking, I jogged over to where the bike had been strapped up, and carried it out to my SUV. "Get in." I signaled to Killian. He looked hesitant for a few minutes before reluctantly sliding into the passenger door I had held open for him, to get out of the pouring rain.
Soon after, I slid into the drivers seat.
Killian looked visibly uncomfortable but I wasn't sure whether it was because he was sitting in a car with a complete stranger, or because he was soaking wet.
"I'll follow you!" I called out to Sarah, as she pulled her car up besides me. She gave me a nod and took off.
Believe it or not, I'd never been to Sarah's place before. Actually, I don't think I'd ever seen or hung out with Sarah besides the precinct and the crime scenes... if you could even call that hanging out.
The dead bodies sorta put a damper on the mood.
I could see Killian shivering out of the corner of my eye, so I turned up the heat and handed him my jacket from the back seat to put on.
"Thanks." He replied simply. I gave him a nod. The jacket was much too big for him, but he wore it well.
We drove in silence the rest of the way back. He was so quiet, I hadn't even noticed that he had drifted off to sleep until I pulled into the front of some apartments. "Killian?" I called shaking him gently. His eyes snapped open so fast, it startled me.
My hand shied away.
"Sorry." We both said at the same time. He wasn't fast enough to compose himself, and I clearly saw the look of fear in his eyes as he stared back at me.
"Are we here?" He asked.
"Yeah, I brought you around to the entrance. Sarah forgot to open up the parking garage doors so ill just drop off the bike tomorrow morning before heading in for work." I explained. He nodded back, moving to open the door.
"Goodnight." I called as he headed out into the rain. He responded by a head nod in my general direction which made me smile a little as he shut the door.
What an odd kid, I thought to myself.
