Chapter four
The next few weeks passed slowly. No one remembered much about what happened during gym class, even Aiden had no clue. Avery made sure those jerks wouldn't bother me anymore. Once the coast was clear, she started going about her schedule again. Aiden though continued to try to change my mind about abortion. I still didn't know why he cared about the baby. What's so special? The father of the baby is famous celebrity that I don't want any reminder of and the baby will be a constant reminder of that. The following day, Aiden invited me to church.
"So can you come?" Aiden asked, his blue eyes looking at me. We have officially known each other for two months. My stomach seemed to be getting bigger every day.
"You know how I feel towards church," I told him, sounding annoyed.
"I know, but I would love if you can come, I'll even pick you up." He offered.
I shook my head, I also noticed that he loves to stand his ground more than necessary. "You do realize that you are setting a bad image when you keep doing that, right?"
"Doing what?" His face flushed with confusion. Although I know he knows what I'm talking about.
"Excuse me, while I explain," I cleared my throat, "A married couple sees a pregnant senior walking around town with another boy, soon they notice that we don't have wedding bands, automatically they think that we live together, not married, and you're the father."
Aiden just smiled, "If they ask, we'll just explain to them the situation." Wow, he thinks everything is so simple. That's not how life works. Never has and never will.
I sighed, rubbing my face in frustration, "Aiden, I'm trying to save your butt from unnecessary problems! Since you are a church kid, what would everyone say?"
He stood silent for a few minutes, "How else am I supposed to prove that God exists to you?"
So that's what it's all about? I groaned, "Aid, I...okay," I finally agreed, "okay fine, I'll come to church with you, but if I don't like it, or if it has nothing to do with me, don't ask me again."
He ran his hand through his hair when he was relieved by my answer. "Okay, great! I'll pick you up Sunday at 9:30 a.m." He turned and left, explaining how he had to run an errand for his mom.
"Yeah, see you at 9:30," I mumbled sarcastically. After I stopped going to church, I vowed never again to step foot in one again. I guess since I promised him about the whole change-my-mind-about-abortion to begin with, I kind of have to now. I never really had a religion after I dropped the concepts of Christianity. I wouldn't call myself an atheist, because that sounds a bit gruesome, but definitely not a Christian. I was on my own. I felt on my own as well, since dad left. If God is a loving God, then why did dad stop loving us? From my earliest memories I had of dad, he was a strong church-goer, but after that night when he left, my thoughts about God changed completely. There were days, however, when I would gaze up at the stars, and tell, more like plead God to show himself if he was real, or at least bring dad back.
I walked inside my house, and sat down on the couch, rubbing my swollen belly. Mom said she'll be home later tonight than usual, so I should make myself some dinner to whatever I can find. I took out the ultrasound pictures from two months ago. The baby looks so tiny. A baby girl. Recently, though, out of no where, I've started to think of a few names. When I caught myself in the act, I was ashamed that I did that without thinking. I still didn't think I would keep the baby. If I don't do abortion soon, my only option would be adoption. Even though, I'm starting to hate both options just as much.
The silence of the house, was in a sense comforting. It gave me time to think, though, I seemed to be doing a lot of that lately. My thoughts constantly drifted over to Colby Hayes. The father of this baby girl. I shuddered, remembering that night fairly well.
The school year finally ended, and I still hadn't paid for the textbooks much less the online college courses that my teacher had recommended for me. And if I didn't pay soon, they said there will be consequences. I knew that a job would take me longer to get the money. Feeling desperate, I decided to take my chances, and get a job. One day, as I was checking my email, one email specifically caught my eye. I was used to spam always finding it's way to my inbox, but this particular email actually had a reasonable email address. Clicking it open, the name Colby Hayes, was written on the top. A far distant memory took place in my mind. Sure, I knew who he was. Every girl knew. His appearance didn't attract me much, except for his humor, judging from his past interviews. Other than that, he was the one and only American famous Singer and Actor and the only person I could call a friend, before fame took him away, but even from that, I learned that looks and reputation can be deceiving, which I learned later on.
The email said things like, concert and last tour in Springfield, New Jersey. Which was the location where I lived. I skimmed through the letter. It didn't say anything out of the ordinary, until I saw a phone number at the bottom, listed as Colby's supervisor, a.k.a secretary, Ms. Amanda Jones. An idea popped into my mind to ask them if they could at least give me job to work at for a little while. Before I could change my mind, I used our home phone to call Ms. Jones. The phone rang three times, until an annoyed and tired female voice answered.
"Hello? Colby's secretary, how may I help you?"
"I um..." I stammered, if I kept doing that, she won't take the time to listen to me, I took a deep breath, and replied, "this is Brooke Parker calling, sorry if I disturbed you..."
"Ma 'me?" She interuppted me, "All fans of Colby will have to come to the live concert that will be held at Springfield, New Jersey. You can get his autograph there. And no, we do not give out free tickets."
Before she hung up, I bit my lip, and said, "Wait! That's not why I'm calling!"
I could imagine her crossing her arms, "State your cause,"
I rolled my eyes, "You see, I was wondering if..."
"Your wondering could possibly be a no, young lady." She interuppted yet again.
"But I..." forget it, I can't talk to someone who won't even listen.
I was about to hang up, when I heard someone else's voice in the back ground, "Rude much, Amanda? Let me talk to her,"
"Colby! You can't just take someone elses phone!" Amanda shrieked.
"Just did." Colby laughed. Soon, the position of the phone seemed to shift, as Colby said, "How may I help you, Ms. Brooke?"
I took a deep breath, and tried to give it another try. "I was calling because I desperately need a job, part time or full time." I said, figuring I'd better get to the point of this.
"Job?"
"Yes, I'm sorry if I disturbed you, but I need the money as soon as possible." He didn't question me on why I couldn't just get a job at Firehouse, or Burger king.
Instead, his answer was simple, "Sure thing! That's what friends do! Since I'll be in New Jersey tomorrow, why don't you come to our set up at around noon? Say 5:30? Where do you live?"
"Actually, I live in New Jersey now." I answered.
He seemed pretty pleased, "That's great! Won't be a big hassle! Alrighty then, see you tomorrow Brooke." with that, we both hung up.
The night passed slowly, since I wasn't a big fan of Colby, that wasn't the problem, I was just still shocked that Colby cut in like that, and just said Yes to my request. The next morning, I asked mom if I could take her car out for a few hours, since I had my license, surpringly, she let. 5:25, I was already standing outside the gate in the Saturday summer heat. A few security guards told me to scram, but I told them that I had an 'appointment' with Colby. One of the guards muttered "Girls." As he left to get Colby. When Colby came out, and greeted me. I had to admit that he looked so much different after five years. Taller by four inches.
"Hey Brooke!" He looked at me up and down, I didn't try much on my appearance, other than the plaid shirt and ironed blue jeans, my hair flowed down to my mid-back.
I nodded. He let me through the gate, and guided me towards his trailer.
"Sorry about Amanda the other day, yesterday was just a busy and exhausted day."
I smiled, "That's alright."
He cleared his throat, "So I was thinking about your request the other day." I nodded, to assure him that I was listening. "You said you needed the money, right?" I nodded again, as we stopped in front of his trailer. "Instead of keeping you working for the whole summer, why don't you spend the night here, I'll give you whatever cost you need the next day."
I stepped back at his request. I've never done anything like that before. He may be an old friend, but I wasn't sure about this. "Won't I get caught?" I questioned.
He waved his hand, "No, I've had other fans in my trailer, so you're not the first." That made me disgusted, but then again, I needed the money, if I rejected his request, he might send me back home.
I sighed, and solemnly agreed. This night doesn't have to be bad, if I don't let anything happen between us. But how I was wrong. The first few hours were going well, with small talk here and there as we shared past memories. We ate a decent enough meal that I couldn't get back home, and soon, I started feeling drowsy, as my eyes were calling for sleep. Colby took me to the small couch. Soon after I noticed how he couldn't keep his eyes off me.
Then I realized, the night would be long indeed.
I shuddered once more at the memory. I hadn't mean't for any of that to happen. I should have gotten up, and left, despite the money I needed. But true to his word, the next day, he gave me more than enough to cover all the costs.
I looked at the baby picture again. I can't accept the thought that I'll be a mother in three months. I laid down on my back, as I did so, I felt a small kick. My eyes shined with excitement. The tiny feet of the baby kept kicking the inside of my belly. I smiled. How can I get rid of such an angel? But even with those words, I still didn't trust myself to fully agree with Aiden. I knew that I could say one thing one day, but change my mine the next day. My only hope would be church this Sunday.
