"And don't forget what I told you, ok? Try to think about happy things," Luke smiled at me, ruffling my hair.
But I still felt betrayed by him. I understood he didn't want to look after me because how I behaved, but this was another situation and he just offered somebody else instead of himself.
"I'll be fine. You don't have to care anymore," I frustratedly swiped his hand off my hair, walking towards my new apartment.
The door opened and I saw some buffed up man, looking like a typical billboard sportsmen.
"Ryan Ohmwrecker. I've met your father once. You look so much like him," he greeted me, and I forced myself to smile back.
"Thanks. So this is my new apartment?" I asked, trying to change the subject.
"Yes, come in. There are already hidden cameras installed through the main rooms. Kitchen, living room, your room, bathroom," he explained, showing me everything around.
"Wait, where are you going to sleep?" I asked confused.
"The footages are played in my apartment right across of yours. The only rooms the cameras aren't are bathroom and your bedroom. In case you would love to bring some girls over," he grinned at me, and I rolled my eyes.
"Now, in the walls are installed the buttons to immediately send a signal to me and to the police department. It looks exactly like this," he showed me a small black button, place between the feet on some statue in the hallway.
"If you have no time to hide you have a hidden room filled with guns and weapons. Thank Luke, he loves shit like that. The room is opened with this button on this picture," he pointed out at a picture in my bedroom.
That's too many informations at once.
"And there's a hidden room opened with this button in case you just want to hide. I think that's all," he finished.
"What if I want to go out? Party for example, or grocery shopping, or meet up with my friends after school," I brought this up, knowing I wanted to meet with my gang.
"I'll be there. Hidden, of course. You won't know I'm there, trust me. You just live the life and I'll make sure no bad guys are after you," he laughed, and I nodded my head.
I'll need to find another way then.
"Ok. That's all then?" I asked, wishing to be alone.
"Yes. I'll be right across, in my apartment. If you need me, just come over."
And with those words and a smile he left my flat. I sat down in the living room, sighing loudly. The whole apartment seemed to be so lonely, so silent. And the worst was the knowledge of the cameras, watching my every step.
I moved myself to the bedroom, hoping Phill was telling the truth and there weren't any cameras here. I sat down on the bed, pulling out my phone.
I quickly texted Wildcat, exactly what my father told me, and then decided to stay the whole time in the bed. I wasn't even in the mood for anything else.
The next day, I was woken up by my alarm clock. As my school was just a few minutes from the school, I didn't have to wake up too early. Not being hungry, I skipped the breakfast, already walking towards the school.
I felt Phill behind me, but I didn't even want to check it. I tried to ignore him, because every time I look at him I was still mad at Luke.
Before I even had a chance to make it to my class, there was mister Dennis who stopped me. He looked behind me, his eyes reflecting a sign that he knew Phill.
"I need to talk with you about your last exam," he said strictly, and I felt this wasn't good at all.
"Is it really that important? My next class starts in a few minutes," I informed him, trying to avoid a embarrassing chat with my teacher.
"It's important. Now follow me."
I sighed, following him to his office. I wanted to close the door behind us, when Phill walked in too.
Oh, great. I just hope he won't tell anything to my father.
"Sit down, Ryan," my teacher pointed at chair, while I heard bells ringing through the school.
I did what he wanted, mentally preparing myself for the drama.
"I understand what's going on in your life. How hard it has to be for you not to be with your father, to be scared everywhere you go," he started, and I frowned.
"You have no idea," I almost growled, but kept that in my throat.
"I lost my father during the war in the Asia when me, Luke and Phill were there. Me and my father were cut off of the rest of the division. They killed him in front of my eyes, when he sacrificed himself, when he let me escaped, and there was nothing I could have done to save him."
Lost his father? How old was he when that happened?
I found myself to be completely breathless, caught in the true story of my teacher's life. I had no idea, somebody like Jonathan, would be part of the army, and that he lost his father in there.
He seemed to be lost in his memories, his blue eyes filled with pain, sorrow, guilt and distance. He was re-living his past.
"He was all alone in the enemy's line. It took him, what? A week? Until he made it back to us. We all thought he died there," Phill continued.
"So trust me, when I say that I understand how you're feeling, Ryan. The only difference is, that you're not alone against Bernard. You have your father, his co-workers, Phill, Luke and me."
Luke.
"But that's not what I wanted to talk about in the first place. Your last exam-" he wanted to continue, but I interrupted him.
"Why did you decide to become a teacher? You had a reason to fight. They killed your father," I asked interested, knowing there wouldn't be better time to ask.
"I just did. Your last exam was a disaster, I'm not going to lie. But as I know how hard it is for you I'll give you a second chance. You have one week to study. There's going to be everything we've done during this semester. There are lot of smart students who can help you. Now off you go," he pointed at the door, and that was the time I noticed a tattoo on the back of his forearm.
"Thank you," I whispered, standing up.
"And my offer still last. If you ever need somebody to talk too..."
He let the sentence unspoken, but this time I gratefully nodded my head. Phill opened the door for me and I left the room. Quickly walking towards me room, I already knew I was late.
I ignored the angry look of my history teacher, while I sat down. She continued with teaching, while my thoughts already ran to different directions. Mainly to the past Jonathan mentioned.
Luke was with them in the army. Was he there when Jonathan lost his father? And did something happened to him? Why did he even become a bodyguard?
I was dragged out of my thoughts when the classmates started to leave the room. I stood up, when I saw Evan walking towards me.
"Ryan, hey," he smiled at me.
"Hi," I replied, walking next to him to our next class.
"You should have seen it yesterday. So many people took a days off. The building is so empty," Evan informed me, and I quickly checked Phill if he could hear us.
"Who's working?" I asked him.
"Wildcat is the only one who's going into the streets. Others are too scared, and I don't have an experience so Wildcat doesn't trust me.
This means Gorilla took his days off too? And what about Mini?
"Is Mini working?" I continued with the questions, hearing him laugh.
"Yeah. He said he wouldn't let Wildcat be there alone. He and eight others are working inside. By the way, I'm throwing a party this Friday for the gang. You're more than welcomed to come," he invited me, and I wanted to pass when I remembered why am I having a bodyguards in the first place.
"Friday? Where?" I relied, seeing his smile widened.
"The nightclub across the bridge. I'll text you the address. Thank you, Ryan. You're the only one who's behaving so kindly to me. Others in gang think I'm inexperienced and clumsy."
"Wildcat wouldn't accept you if he didn't have his reasons. You'll be fine," I grinned at him, patting his back.
I remembered my first days at our gang. Being judged because my father's job. And I understood their caution towards complete strangers.
"Thanks. By the way, what's up with the older man always following you through the school?" he asked me, looking behind us.
I could lie, that was my first intention, but what's the point now?
"That's... that's my bodyguard. My father sent him to look after me," I explained, walking into the room.
"Oh."
I sat down, placing my forehead on the table. I was so exhausted and I had so many more hours ahead of me.
