10 hours later
I continue watching the picture, not sure of what should I do. Should I call him? What is he going to say? How am I going to explain all this? Do I even have his number?
I sigh and pull out my phone. I scroll down my contact list and see his name in my screen.
Paul Higgins.
I put my thumb over the name, not sure if I should tap the number and call him. Just then, my phone rings meaning that someone is calling me. I see the caller ID and in big letters it says: Emily.
“Hello?” I answer.
“Hey, is everything okay? Do you need anything?” She asks.
I shake my head even though I know she can’t see me. “No, everything’s fine.” I reply.
“Oh, okay…”
Silence.
“Emily?”
“Yes?”
“What’s going on?” I ask.
She sighs. I just know her so well. “I told my mom what happened, she’s on her way to your house to make you company for a little while. I hope that’s okay.”
I smile a little. “It’s totally fine, Em.”
“She just want to talk to you about who are you going to live with and all that stuff.” She explains.
“I understand.” I reply. “Uhm, actually I think I just found someone who I can live with.”
“Who?”
Ding. Dong.
Ding. Dong.
“Someone’s outside.” I say. “I’ll call you later.”
“It’s probably my mom, but okay. I’ll be waiting for your call.”
After saying our goodbyes, I stand up from my parents’ bed and walk towards the front door. I look outside the window, and in fact it is Emily’s mom. I open the door and I’m suddenly attacked with a big hug.
“I’m so sorry, Bree.” She said. I smile a little and tears begin filling my eyes. I miss mom so much already.
“Thank you Mrs. Jones.” I say, pulling away.
“If you need anything you know you can count with me.” She says.
I nod, wrapping my arms around her tiny waist. “Thank you.” I say, as I feel the tears fall from my eyes.
After hugging her for a while, I invited her inside and offer her a cup of tea. She gladly accepted and we began our conversation in the living room.
She first wanted to know what I was going to do with all the belongings. The best idea that we had was to sell them or give them to charity. In the end we decided to do both, because I was going to need some money after all.
“Now, the most important question is: who are you going to live with?” she asks.
I sigh and when I’m about to speak, she cuts me off.
“I would love to have you in my house, but there’s no space. Also, having 4 kids is very tiring.” She adds.
I giggle. “It’s okay Mrs. Jones. I actually had someone in mind, but it’s been a while since I talked to him and he probably still don’t know what happened.” I explain.
She frowns. “Who are we talking about?”
I look at her. “My mom’s brother. Paul Higgins.”
“Oh yeah, I think I heard your mom talk about him a few times.” I smile a little at the memory of my mom. “So, should we call him?”
“Uhm, I prefer to do that alone if you don’t mind.”
“Oh, of course.” She replies, smiling. “I’ll leave now then, so you can make that call. You need to call me as soon as you know something though, okay?”
I nod. “Thank you.” I say. “Once again.”
She smiles. “It’s not a problem, dear.” She says, walking towards the door. “Call me as soon as you hang up with him, okay?” She says. I nod. “Good luck, and I’ll talk to you later.” She says. She opens the door and after giving me a kiss in the cheek, she walks towards her car. I closed the door, sighing. I really hope I can live with him.
I go up to my room and sit on my bed. I take out my phone and search for Paul Higgins on my contact list. When I find him, I don’t hesitate on tapping the phone number this time.
Ring.
Ring.
Ring.
Ring.
“Hello?” Someone says. Thank you, God.
“Uncle Paul?” I ask, my voice breaking at the end.
“Bree? Is that you?” He asks. And at this point I can’t hold the tears anymore.
I smile a little, happy that he remembered me. “Yes, it is me.” And more tears stream down my face. “How you’ve been?”
“I’ve been great, love. How about you?” He replies. I open my mouth, but nothing comes out. “Bree, are you still there?”
I clear my throat. “Y-yes.” My voice breaks again.
“Is something wrong?” He asks.
“Uncle Paul…” I let out a shaky breath. “Mom, dad and Johnny had a car accident.”
“How did it happen? Are they okay?” He asks, his tone of voice getting serious all of a sudden.
I shake my head, forgetting that he couldn’t see me. “We’re not sure how did it happened.” I managed to say later. “But they crashed with an 18 wheeler truck and Johnny died instantly. Mom and dad died on the way to the hospital.” I managed to explain, my voice breaking in a few parts.
“Oh my God.” He sighs. “Bree, I’m so sorry.”
“Thanks.” I sniffled.
“Wait, so who are you leaving with?” He asks, sniffling. Probably from crying.
“Uhm, actually that is one of the reasons of why I’m calling you. I was wondering if I could live with you. I’m not 18 yet, so I can’t live on my own.” I explain.
“Oh.” He says, and this is when I start to get nervous. “Sure. Of course you can live with me, but there is one problem.”
“What is it?”
“I live in London.” He says.
My jaw drops. “As in London, England?!” I exclaim. If I go with him, what about my friends? Or college?
“Yup. I have a great job here, so I can’t move over there. Besides, my wife and kids are here.” He explains.
“No, I understand.” I say.
“So, what do you say? Do you want to move to England?”
I sigh. “Do I have a choice?” I ask.
“Not really.” He says, chukling a bit. “But it’s really nice over here, and you’ll make friends easily, you’ll see.”
I smile a little. “If you say so.”
“Hey, isn’t really late over there?” He asks. I look at the clock. 1:30 am.
“Yeah, but I really needed to speak to you.” I explain. “Besides, I don’t know if I can sleep after all that happen.”
He sighs. “Bree, you need to get some rest. It’s going to be good for you.”
“Okay, I’ll try to.”
“Good. Now, we’ll be in contact to arrange your flight and stuff.” He explains. “I’ll call you tomorrow to see when’s the best time for you to come, or do you want me to pick you up?”
I love how he’s good at taking care of things. “No, it’s okay uncle Paul. I’ll get there.”
“Okay then. Have a goodnight.”
I smile. “Have a good morning.” He chuckled and after saying our goodbyes we hung up.
I guess I’m going to start a new life in London then.
