Chapter 1
It was another beautiful day in Los Angeles, California. The sun was out and it was a perfect day to go to the beach. I had this day planned with my best friend, Emily. We were going with a lot of other friends and have a good time before we all left for college since we had just graduated.
“Good afternoon mother.” I say, with quite a big smile on my face.
“Hello Bree.” She replied, a smile on her face as well. “You have everything ready for today?” She asked.
I just nodded and turned to look at my baby brother, John. “Hello, Johnny!” I cooed in a baby voice, earning a chuckle from him.
“Hi bree!” My 6 year old brother replied. I just giggled.
“Hello family!” My dad suddenly said, walking towards us. “Bree, are you ready?”
I nodded, “Yeah, but Emily is picking me up, so don’t worry.” I said.
“Ah, all right then.” He said with a smile. “Well, your mother, John and I are going out tonight.”
I smiled “Where are you guys going?”
“We don’t know yet.” My mom replied.
“Oh, well you guys go have fun!” I said. “And don’t bother to come home early.” I said, half joking. I really wanted to have the house to myself when I came back, mostly because there was a special someone who I wanted to be with and have some alone time with.
My dad narrowed his eyes playfully at me and I just grinned.
I heard a honk outside the house and immediately knew that was Emily.
“Well, that must be Emily.” I said, grabbing my bag from the couch. “Goodbye family!” I said as I kissed them all on the cheek.
“Have fun!” They said in unison, except for John who was playing with his toys, not paying attention to what was happening around him.
I ran towards Emily’s car, super excited for our day at the beach. “Hello, love!” She says as I get in.
“Hey, babe!” I reply as she starts driving. Our houses were not too far from the beach so 20 minutes later Emily was already parking her car. “So, do you know if Matt is going to be here?” I ask, blushing a bit.
She shrugs. “I really don’t know, wh—” and she gasps. “What is going on between you and Matt?” she asks, getting all excited.
I rolled my eyes, a smile still in my face. “Nothing is going on. I mean, if we don’t see each other today I guess nothing is going to happen. We’ve been texting for a couple of days, but nothing more.” I explain.
Emily squeals, “Oh my God, I’m so excited for you.” I just giggle and get out of the car, Emily following. She locks the car and we walk towards the beach were we can spot some of our friends already there.
“But do you think he really likes me?” I ask.
She scoffs. “Of course he likes you! I mean, who wouldn’t like you? With your beautiful, long, wavy brunette blonde hair and your gorgeous, big brown eyes… I swear if I was a lesbian I would be all over you, Bree.” I just laughed.
As we get closer to our group of friends, they all say hi to us, inviting us to sit with them. As soon as I sit down, I spot Matt. A big smile appears on my face and that’s when Emily knows what is going on. I just wave at him lightly though, I don’t want to act all desperate. He returns the wave and that’s all I need to get more excited than before.
A few hours passed by and we continued to have fun. We had fun by the water and we even tried to learn to surf, which of course was a total fail, but we had a laugh which was good. Matt and I had talked for a while, but I didn’t see him that interested in me. I told this to Emily, but she cheered me up by saying I was overreacting and I believed her.
It was getting darker now and some of my friends were starting to make a bonfire. Some of us had brought Chocolate, marshmallow and crackers so we were excited to make some s’mores. As we sat around the bonfire, my cell phone started ringing. I looked at the caller ID to see that it was my mom calling, so I decided to go somewhere more private to talk.
“Hello?” I answered.
“Hello, love.” She answered. “How is everything going?”
I smile, looking at my friends. “Everything’s good. How are you guys?”
“We’re doing good, we were just heading home now.” And then I remembered Matt and the alone time that I wanted to spend with him at my house.
“No, stay more time wherever you are. It’s still early.” I said, trying to convince her.
“Mm,” she said. I could already see her eyes narrowing. “Bree, what’s going on?”
“Psh, nothing’s going on mom.” I laughed, but it came out really fake. I sighed. “I just wanted to spend some time with Matt there.” Yes, my mom knew about him and the crush I had. She trusted me though and she knew that nothing was going to happen if we were alone for a couple of minutes.
“Fine. I’ll convince your father.” She said.
I grinned. “Thank you so much mom!” I almost screamed. She just laughed and we said our last goodbyes.
With a big smile on my face, I went back to the bonfire only to see that Emily was walking towards me. I frowned at the shocked face that he had plastered on her face. “Something wrong?” I asked.
She sighed. “Uhm…I think you need to see that.” She said slowly, trying to put the word together. She pointed to the bonfire. I couldn’t really tell what she wanted me to see, but I kept on searching and then I saw it. Matt. I let out a soft gasp as I saw him kissing another girl. “Ugh, that bastard.” Emily said. “I swear I’m going to kill him!” She added, walking towards him but I stopped her.
“It’s not worth it Em. Just let it go.” I said. I sighed and looked down at my phone. I had to call mom back and tell her that they could go home now. I dialed the familiar number and put it to my ear. No answer. I sighed and decided to call her later.
We want back to the bonfire and acted like if nothing had happened. At times I would look at Matt, but my heart was breaking more and more as he didn’t pay attention to me. Minutes later my phone rang. It was an unknown number, but I answered it anyways.
“Hello?” I asked to the unknown person on the other line, as I got away from the bonfire for more privacy.
“Is this Bree Williams?” a young woman asked.
I nodded. “Yeah, this is she.”
“We’re calling from the St. Joseph Hospital. Your family had a car accident. You need to get here immediately.” She explained. My eyes widen, my mouth had the shape of a perfect ‘O’ and all I could do was drop my phone to the sand. Tears started feeling my eyes immediately. What had happened? I asked to myself. I started walking to the bonfire again looking for Emily. She caught my eyes and as soon as she noticed I was crying, she ran to me.
“What’s wrong?” She asked.
“My parents and my baby brother.” I sobbed. “They were in a car accident.”
Her eyes widen and she picked up my cell phone from the sand. She grabbed my hand and took our bags, guiding me directly to her car without saying goodbye to anyone or explaining why we were leaving.
After telling her what hospital they were in, she drove us there and parked her car as quickly as possible. When we were at the front desk, she asked for my parents and baby brother and soon had directions of where we had to go. All this time I was crying wondering if everything was going to be okay.
“Bree Williams?”A young nurse, dressed in white asked. I just nodded, tears filling my eyes once again. A sad look was suddenly plastered I her face. “I’m really sorry for your loss.” She said. And that’s when more tears fell from my eyes.
“What happened?” I managed to ask.
“All we know is that they crashed with an 18 wheeler truck. The baby died instantly and as for your mother and father, they died on the way to the hospital. Again, I’m very sorry.” She explained.
I fell backwards. Gladly, there was a chair behind me. Emily sat by my side and tries to comfort me, but I know that nothing would work. My dad, my mom, my baby brother… they were all dead.
I just couldn’t believe it.
