Chapter 15

Hey guys! Sooooo sorry for the late update! Had to change the name, as I found another story called 'Well This Is Unexpected' on here, I wanted to be unique! xD Plus it wasn't very catchy D: The new cover was made by the amazing Cherryp2!

CHAPTER START

Herriek’s POV

Good… good… all is proceeding according to the plan. Just a few more days! A few mere hours and I will be leaving this place, never to return. I shall die in my rightful birthplace, as prophesied.

Darren’s POV

The blackness slowly started to fade as I sat up. I shake my head to clear it as I survey the room around me, weird. While Jayden is looking panicked and regretful, Tina is just emotionless and staring at the floor.

“What’s eating you, Jayden?” I manage to croak. I clear my throat as his head snaps up, only a little relief dawning on his features.

“It’s Kaycee…” He starts; he cuts off, unable to continue.

“Aw, damn… She saw all that? Don’t worry, man, she’ll understand that we couldn’t tell her.” I sympathise, trying to comfort my best friend. This doesn’t seem to relieve him at all, though. In fact, if anything, he looked even more panicked by this fact.

“It’s not that. It’s… he… they took her, Darren… they took Kaycee.”

I’d never seen my friend so hopeless in his life, he’d always been the one by my side, happy or disapproving… or annoying occasionally… but never hopeless. It was… disturbing.

“What?!” Both mine and Jayden’s heads’ snapped in Tina’s direction, it was the first emotion she had shown… well, all day.

“They took Kaycee.” Jayden repeated.

“But-  How-  Why?” Tina asks, confusion taking over.

“I don’t know, maybe he thought they could use her as blackmail, or a bargaining tool, or something.”

Tina’s eyes narrowed in anger, an evil glint shining in them. I guess she’s back to normal, then.

“Wait a sec., I just wanna clear something up. What’s been wrong with you all day, Tina? You’ve been acting like the Ice Queen.”

“Darren, I really don’t think this is the time for that, do you?”

I just raise my hands in surrender to save argument… Yeah… that’s why.

“Now, I think I’ve got a plan… but you two are going to have to listen, very carefully. It’s crucial that everything goes exactly to plan, or Kaycee is gonna have to spend the night wherever they are keeping her… Who knows what they’ll be doing to her?” She looked pointedly at Jayden on the last sentence.

We quickly nod, neither of us wanting to see anything bad happen to Kaycee, and she starts to elaborate on her plan.

Kaycee’s POV

I slowly open my bleary eyes, and I’m greeted with a familiar sight. I’m behind the curtains of the stage in our schools theatre.

What am I doing here?

It’s pretty dark, with no light coming from the gaps underneath or at the sides of the curtains.

It must be night time, then.

I can hear soft, hushed voices coming from the other side of the curtain, one I recognize as the guy from earlier, who I was supposedly going to be spending the night with tonight. Well, not on my watch.

I stand up and creep closer to the curtain, so I can hear the whispers coming from the other side more clearly.

“It seems the mistake you made was not such a terrible outcome after all, Jasper. Congratulations! Of course, it is all thanks to your clever twin, Kathryn over here, who came up with this idea of using her as bait.”

My mouth gaped open in indignation, using me as bait?! Well, not for much longer!

I hurry to the door and try the handle. It jiggles, but the door remains firmly closed.

Damn, locked. What now?

My eyes scour the room as I keep my ears trained into the voices coming from in front of the curtains. As my head is still trying to wrap around all the crazy stuff happening in my life right now, my eyes land on the floor, a sudden idea sparking in my head. I silently thank God that I decided to take part in the last school play, as I had to go through the trap door in the floor of the stage at one point.

“Ah, here he is… Finally, you’re late!” The voice from earlier continues as my fingers search the floor of the stage, “Our man on the other side finally decided show up, did he?” ‘Man on the other side’, what? That means someone on our ‘side’… is a traitor? That was hard to comprehend. No time to dwell on his words, though, as his next words make me shiver with unease and disgust, “I have something for you, or someone, you may recognise her...” I could practically hear the sneer in his voice, malice curling around every word. I could almost cry with joy when I find the handle for the trap door carved into the floor. I couldn’t see a thing in the darkness, but I knew this was it. I carefully opened the door, leaving behind the gaping hole in the floor behind.

I wince as I make the slightest sound, freezing and listening for the sound of footsteps, yelling. However, there was not a sound from outside in the auditorium, so I assumed that they had moved on to another part of the building. I smoothly slid the rest of my bod into the alcove that led underneath the stage. It then swung around, underneath the front of the auditorium, where it splits into two paths, one leading back to the dressing room; the other ran straight, underneath the whole of the auditorium and round to the entrance of the theatre. I take the latter, I don’t know how long it took me to reach my destination, but I finally got there. I check the coast is clear and slink into the entrance hall of the school. I shudder, partly because I think back to how dark it was underneath the stage and in the passage; partly because it is – to be blunt – freezing.

I shut the passage door behind me and check the front door, surprisingly finding it open.

They obviously weren’t expecting me to escape.

I high-tail it out of there and run towards-

I pause. Where am I going to go? I can’t go home at this time, my parents would kill me! Maybe I can call Tina? I would call one of the boys, but I remember that that guy, whoever he was, said, ‘Our man on the inside’. I bite my lip, trying to think what to do, when I suddenly remember a conversation Tina and I had, before Darren tried to kiss her that day at lunch, it seems like so long ago now... She was telling me about why she had joined half way through this term, I could tell she was skipping things out, but at this moment only one part of the conversation stuck in my brain.

‘ “It’s crazy, one minute I’m living in a three bedroom house in London; the next I’m living in a mansion in Florida!” Tina says, excitement bubbling in her voice.

“So, do you live near to Peckerton, then?” I ask, wondering about if I could ever stay round at her house, my parents would never allow it if she lived more than twenty minutes away from school.

“Oh, yeah! About ten, maybe fifteen minutes away from school. Number five Montague Avenue. Why do you ask?”

“My parents.” I reply, bluntly. She just nods knowingly, and we continue on with our mindless chatter until we are suddenly stopped by Darren...’

Five Montague Avenue.

Five Montague Avenue.

I know where that is! If I run, I could be there in about five minutes.

And I started to run.

Tina’s POV

I run a hand through my hair as I wake up from the same dream I had last night, with my brother, and Phoenix and Darren and Jayden and Phoenix’s two men. I take deep breaths and try to slow down my heart rate. I turn on the light and stare into space, thinking about what has happened in the past week, why does it seem like so much longer?

I almost jump out of my skin when there is a crash on the window. My head snaps towards the sound, so fast I’ll probably have whiplash tomorrow, another rock hits the window, creating the sound again. I cautiously make my way towards my window and peek out.

I couldn’t believe my eyes. Kaycee stood there, looking bedraggled and tired. Hope filled me, and I ran down to the back door – thankfully not getting lost on the way – and let her in.

"Oh my gosh! Are you okay? Please, tell me you're okay!" I gush, I couldn't stand it if something happened to her because of Darren, Jayden and I.

"I'm fine, Tina. But what the heck is this all about. I'm kidnapped, then I wake up to some guy telling me that you three have been lying to me about stuff? Well?"

"I know, and I'm sorry. We had to keep it a secret! If we told, your life would be at risk."

"Huh? Tina, what is it that you're keeping from me?"

"Okay, fine. I'll tell you. But you have to promise me you won't tell anybody! Is that clear? If anyone found out-"

"I won't, I promise! Just tell me what's going on."

"Okay! But, you're gonna think I'm really crazy..."

She just gave me a flat look, prodding me to continue.

"Okay..." I begin, with reluctance. "Darren, Jayden and I are... sort of... supernatural creatures."

Her face drained of colour.

Okay, bad sign. Please don't scream, please don't scream, please don't-

"What?" A weak, shaky voice interrupted my mind probe.

Phew.

"Darren is a vampire... Jayden is a werewolf... and I'm-" I broke off, if she already thought they were freaks, me being a hybrid would be even worse...

"You're what?" If possible her voice seemed even more frail than before.

I winced, "I'm... a hybrid. Part witch, part vampire and part werewolf." I brace myself for her reaction, but the expected scream didn't come.

"So... my almost boyfriend is a... werewolf? And my almost boyfriend's best friend is... a vampire? And my best friend is... a werewitchvampire?"

"Well... I'm sure there's a more... technical term to what I am, but - for the most part - yes."

"Holy... I can't believe I didn't notice, I mean, vampires drink blood... I've known Darren for years. He's good at covering it up. And Jayden... don't werewolves change on a full moon? He's never acted weirdly... but he is reluctant to go out at night sometimes..."

"So, now you know why, probably. How did you escape from Pheonix?"

"Oh, he didn't expect me to know the school inside and out. I never thought I'd be thankful that I performed in the last school play!"

"What?! Last school play? You mean... you were being held... at school?"

"I know, right? I was onstage, no less. I wonder how long it'll take him before he realizes I'm gone. I heard some interesting things while I was there, though."

"Like what?"

"You're not gonna like this... I overheard him, Phoenix, saying something about there being a traitor on your - our - side."

I was shocked, to say the least.

"So... someone, either Jayden or Darren, is betraying me... us?"

"Looks like it, I didn't see who it was, sorry, Tina. I was kinda more interested in getting out of there."

"No, no! Of course, I think I have a plan..."

"For what?"

"To discover who the traitor is! Listen, I need you to tell one of them that there's been a change of plan. I'm going to pretend that I've switched over and gone to my brother's side."

"Wait, what? Your brother's side?"

Crap. I wasn't supposed to tell anyone that, not even Darren or Jayden! Oh well, no going back now...

"It's Phoenix. He's... my brother." I explain nervously, biting my lip. "But you can't tell Darren or Jayden, they don't even know!"

"But... how? What?"

"I've already told Darren this, I wanted to forget about it! Fine, I'll tell you, too..." And so I told her everything, with the recent update of my dream last night, allowing me to discover the identity of Phoenix. Obviously, my brother.

"So, you thought your brother was... dead?"

"He's as good as, now. He's crossed over, changed... he's not the Stephen I know anymore." I sigh, my eyes stinging a little at the thought of my brother's cheeky, 12 year old face, smiling at me as he went out the door - the last time I saw him. There was silence as his face then changed, warped into his face from before, when we were in the classroom... when he was fighting me flashed through my head, I frowned as I thought about just how much he had changed since we were children.

"Okay, I'm only gonna let you do this because I'm still a little mad at you for not telling me about all this. However, I am going to tell you this, from what I heard earlier, this guy is not to be messed with. He is sadistic, and if he found you were lying to him, sister or not, he will - most probably - kill you. So, on that note, what do you want me to tell Jayden?"

"What do you mean?"

"You know, 'Change of plan'? it's probably easier for me to tell Jayden, as he's my boyfriend... well, almost."

"Uh... Tell him we are now going to... rush in straight away."

"What's the point of this anyway?"

"Well, as I told you, I'm going in there pretending to be a traitor of our side. I'm going to keep an ear  open to see which of these plans gets back to Phoenix, and voila! We'll have our traitor."

"Nice! Well, the idea is... not the fact that there's a traitor. Hey, can I use your shower?"

"Of course, and you might want to call your parents, they'd be worried sick!"

"Yeah, yeah, yeah..." She groaned, then proceeded to mumble, "Stupid, over-protective parents."

I just smile and roll my eyes, deciding what would be the best way to execute my plan to infiltrate from within.

.     .     .

*24 hours later*

This is it. I'm going in. I grin at Kaycee, she's the only one that knows what I'm doing. She's already told Jayden the second plan, now it's time for me to do my part.

"See ya later. And remember, don't die!" Kaycee jokes beside me.

"Not a thing to be joking about, especially when I actually could die." I retort, nervously.

"Sorry! Touch wood and all that." She says, touching the bark of the tree nearest to her.

We were going to follow them from the school, to find out where they were hiding.

"Tina! Over there." I look to where she is pointing, to see three figures, shrouded in cloaks walking down the pavement, careful to keep to the shadows.

I whisper one final goodbye to Kaycee, promising that I'll come to her house, which she gave me the address of earlier, later that evening and fill her in on what is happening. Hopefully, by then, I'll know who the traitor is.

I slink forward, cautiously, keeping my distance from the three cloaked figures, my footsteps silent.

Suddenly, a fourth figure appears out of nowhere, joining up with the three - it must be the traitor. My blood boils as I glare at the fourth figure. I think he senses that he is being watched, as he turns around, making sure his face was covered by the hood of his cloak, and searches the landscape, causing me to crouch down and crawl into the nearest bush. Thank God they decided to build the school near a forest. We took the chance on them being at the school a second night, thankfully, it payed off.

The figure slowly turns back to face front, then slightly leans over to the left, whispering something to the others.

I cautiously rise from my hiding place, keeping watch on the four in front of me as we near an opening in the forest before them. I hurry to keep up, making sure to keep sight of them as they enter the woodland.

After about 10 minutes of dragging myself noiselessly through fallen trees and wet mud, I see them up ahead once more, iron gates before them, opening without a sound. I wait a full half an hour, timing it on my phone, before slowly walking forward.

"Excuse me, miss. Please state your business." A guard loomed up out of the darkness, he had a harsh face, with sharp edges and menacing eyes, narrowed in suspicion.

"My name is Tina Bolaine."

"And why, miss Bolaine, are you here?"

"I am here to join forces with my brother."

"And whom might that be?"

"Why, the mighty Phoenix, of course."

His eyes widened with disbelief, before he cracked up into laughter.

"You almost had me going there. Now, tell the truth, or you will be executed!"

"That is truth." I snap, defiantly.

His eyes narrowed, scanning my face,

"Come to think of it, you do look somewhat... alike."

"Well of course we do. Seeing as how we're twins." I fire back at him, getting slightly angry at his rudeness.

"One thing's for sure, you definitely share the same temper as our leader..." He pondered, "Go on in."

I smile smugly, and wait as the gate opens. Walking in, nerves kick in as I saunter slowly down the path. As I round the corner, I am greeted with a magnificent sight, there's a castle... a real castle.

Wow. I wonder how old this place is...

I shake the thought away, so not the time for that.

The tall walls of the castle seem to reach higher than the clouds above it, the towers spiralling up further than that. Little slit-windows are placed at equal intervals along the walls and there's a great wooden door at the front. In short, it's like something straight out of the 1800s.

I concentrate on the task at hand and focus on one thing, convincing Phoenix I'm on his side, to find out who the traitor is.

I walk, determined, to the door. Before I could even knock, however, the door is opened and I'm faced with Phoenix himself.

I force myself to run to him and throw my arms around him. He is shocked at first, then slowly returns the squeeze.

"You have no idea how hard it was to pretend not to be on your side when I saw you that day, so hard not to run to you and squeeze you and never let you go again. Brother, when you left, nothing was the same... Karen and Elijah... they changed. They decided it was my fault that you disappeared, they alienated me, treating me like a slave and never let me rest from performing. It is so good to finally see you, alive and well, after all these years!" It was mostly true, Karen and Elijah had treated me like a slave and never let me rest from rehearsals and performing.

I stepped back, not too late to watch Phoenix transform before my eyes. He became shorter, his hair became lighter, and his eyes transformed into very familiar blue/grey shaded ones. I watched, unable to breathe, as he transformed into my brother. Once the transformation was done, I was overwhelmed with emotions, happiness, sorrow, confusion, love.

"Phoenix is growing more powerful, he has almost taken me over fully." He said in the voice I knew so well, yet hadn't heard in almost 5 years. He rolled his neck around as he said this, before straightening it and looked straight at me. Recognition showed on his features and I was swept into a tight hug. "Tina! I'd never thought I'd see you again!"

"Stephen? Is it really you?" I had to make sure, before I let him in my life, after all, this could all be a trick, he could be lowering my barriers, my defences and creeping in to toy with my head.

"I go by the name of Sean, now. But, yes, Tina - it's me. I only saw you again in my dreams! I can't believe your here!" Suddenly he grabbed my shoulders and held me at arms length. "You shouldn't be here."

"Why not?!"

"Because, you are against Phoenix, right?"

"Yes... so?"

"He would kill you if he found out!"

"But, I don't get it. Phoenix is you!"

"No, he's not... well, sort of. You know I disappeared all those years ago? I was kidnapped. Taken by a group of people, they called themselves the 'Resistance'. I already knew, by then, that I wasn't normal. I could lift you with my little finger, of course, I always made it seem like I was straining with one hand, but I could. They kidnapped me and injected me with this... formulae. It gave me a split personality, sort of. In short, Phoenix became me. It started off that I was in control of him, but his strength grew, then it was half and half.... I never knew if I was him or me, or where either of us started or ended. Then he overpowered me. I'm Phoenix almost all the time, unless he starts to feel actual genuine emotions, other than hatred of anger, then tha's when I take over. You brought me out this time, but it's never for long. The most time I have as, well, me is 10 minutes, maximum. You need to go!"

"I can't."

"Why not?!"

"There's a traitor, on our side. I'm just about to figure out who it is. Please, I have to stay."

"Fine. But as soon as you fin out who it is, you leave, okay? I can't control him, Tina, you have to understand that!"

"I know, and I do. But I have to do this."

"You always were stubborn." He said, rolling his eyes, amusement on his features. He opens his mouth to say something else, but he suddenly transforms again, back to Phoenix.

"Why are you here? Last time I checked, you almost killed me!"

"I would never! Please, brother, I only wish to join you!" and find out who the traitor is. I add silently.

His eyes narrowed, surveying me. I was only slightly worried he would find out he was lying, I kept my face covered with fake anxiety, and made my fingers fiddle with the hem of my shirt, as if I was nervous that he would not accept me.

His face cleared. I waited, hopefully I had passed his examination.

"Oh, this is rich. Even their 'leader' has turned against them." He smirked. "Come with me, I would like to discuss a few things with you."

I fell into step beside him, "Like what, master." I enquire. The 'master' on the end made his smirk even bigger, if possible.

"Like their plans, a little birdie told me something, for instance. I would like for you to clarify the news."

This was it. I threw him a questioning glance, which he answered, as I had hoped.

"This little birdie told me that their plans were to... rush in like fools, hoping to catch me by surprise."

My breath caught in my throat. It could only mean one thing the traitor was... I shake my head to clear my thoughts, and concentrate on the door opening up ahead. We walk in to what must be the main ballroom of the castle. Sitting on chair at the far end, as if to clarify my suspicions, was...

Jayden.

..........................................................................................................................................................

BAD JAYDEN! xD

Okay, change of plans. I thought this was gonna be the last chapter, but then I decided too much was happening, so... it's not. The next chapter will be the last ;( lol!
