Moving.
CHAPTER 14
Maddie's POV
I woke up to someone knocking on my door. "Come in." I called, and sat up in bed. To my surprise, it wasn't Demi. but my mom who walked through the door. "Hey Mads, Can we talk?" Those last three words made my anxiety climb and my heart began to race. "S-Sure." I managed to choke out. She sat on the edge of my bed, "Well your father and I have been talking about a huge decision that we need to make." I nodded, waiting for her to tell me. "It's what's best for our family, including Demi." I was starting getting impatient, "Mom just tell me." She took a deep breath, "WeremovingtoCalifornia." I sighed, "Slower please." "We are moving to California." My jaw dropped open, "WHAT?" My mom smiled. "Your father and I have been thinking about this for a long time. And we really think this ia what's best. You'll love California." My mouth floundered. I wasn't prepared for this. I thought she was going to go on a rant about how she knows what i've been doing and that she's disowning me. But THIS?! Moving to California? "B-But what about school?" My mom shrugged, "We'll find you a new school, with a better education. You'll make new friends! Besides, You'll be a lot closer to Demi!" I shut my mouth at that. "When?" Was the only thing I said. My mom bit her lip, "Uhm..." "Mom. When." She sighed, "At the end of the week." I stood up. "ARE YOU KIDDING? WHEN WERE YOU GOING TO TELL ME?" My mom gave me a glare. "Madison! Don't shout at me! The deal just closed this morning. We didn't want to get your hopes up just in case it didn't fall though." I stood there for a second, then sat down on the bed. "Okay." My mom smiled and hugged me, "I knew you'd understand." Then she got up and left.
I laid in my bed for a while. Immersed in my thoughts. Moving to California meant being closer to Demi. Which meant more of a chance of being caught. Which meant hiding it more, putting in more effort, and always being afraid of the truth getting out. That thought struck me. The truth getting out. Imagine the headlines. Plastered all over Perez, and TMZ. Lovatics turning against Demi. More hate. What if she relapses. Demi would hate me if anyone ever found out.
Suddenly, the bed shifted and someone pulled me close to them in a hug. The smell of coconuts filled the air, and I knew it was Demi. She sighed, "You excited for the move?" I nodded and Demi snorted. "Don't lie to me Maddie, I know you're not taking it that well." I groaned and rolled away from her. "Does she tell you evvvverrything?" Demi smiled proudly and nodded, "Yep." She popped the 'p' and pulled me back to her. "So what's up? Why's the idea of moving so bad? You spent most of your time in Cali anyway." I shrugged, "Texas is.... Home. It's where all of our family is. Where are we going to go if I want some Texas?" Demi smiled, "That's the best part! We still get to keep this house." I raised an eyebrow, "Really?" Demi nodded, the grin still on her face. I racked my brain, thinking of another problem. "Hey Mads?" I snapped out of it and looked at her. She had a weird look on her face. "Is there anything you want to tell me?" My heart started pounding and I knew Demi could feel it because we were so close. "N-No." Demi's eyebrow dipped, "You'd tell me if something was wrong right?" This was the moment, I could tell her everything. I could let it all out. Like emptying the bottle. Just tell her Maddie c'mon she's your sister. She'll love you either way. I took a deep breath... and I couldn't do it. The words wouldn't com out. Instead, "No, nothings wrong. Why do you ask?" I'll never forget the look in Demi's eyes. Disappointment. It was as if she already knew everything but was waiting for me to make the decision. She nodded and looked away, "No reason." I broke for a second. "Demi there is something." Her eyes snapped to mine, and I could see the hope in her eyes. Unfortunately, my demons arequick fixers. "I-I..." I hesitated and Demi took my hand. "It's opkay babygirl, tell me." I sighed, giving into the demons screaming for me not to tell her. "The reason I don't want to move is because I think I like someone in California that I met last time I was there, but he has a girlfriend. And I don't want to get hurt." It was true, but not what I wanted to say. Demi's eyes saddened for a second, then brightened again almost instantly. I admired her acting skills. She could put on such a good face. I hoped one day I could do that. "Well, we'll just have to go and get your man!" Demi said, with a huge smile. She poked my side, "Whaat's his nameeee?" I allowed myself to let out a small giggle, "Drew." Demi made a dramatic movement in the air, "Drew. Drew. Drew." She kept saying his name is obnoxious accents, waving her hands. I giggled and pulled her arms down, "Shutup! Mom will hear!" Demi grinned evily, "Maybe I should tell her..." I quickly rolled on top of her and pinned her down. Forgetting that I was wearing short sleeves. "Don't. You. Dare." Demi smiled up at me and I saw my arms uncovered. Quickly, I wrenched myself off of her and buried under the covers again. Demi pulled the covers over us and began to tickle my sides. "NOOOOOOOO!" I screamed, laughing uncontrollably at the same time. Demi threw the blankets off of us and went at me again but I quickly ran off of the bed and barricaded myself in the bathroom, looking desparately for something I could cover myself up with. Demi pounded on the door, "MADISON GET OUT HERE I'M NOT DONE." I cackled loudly, a fake laugh that I had perfected, and continued to search through my hamper. Finally coming across a sweatshirt. I threw it on and opened the door, Demi stood there, here fist still raised to pound on the door. "Oh. You listened to me." She sadi lamely, clearly enjoying the shouting. Before she could react I tackled her to the ground and pinned her with my legs, tickling her armpits and sides. She screamed bloody murder and hit my arms. I almost cried out when she hit fresh cuts but quickly covered it by laughing. The door to my room burst open and My mom and Dad ran in. "What the hell is going on in here?" He thundered. Demi and I froze, desparately trying not to burst out laughing. My parents took in the scene, the sheets strewn across my bed, and pillows everywhere. Me pinning Demi onto the floor, both of usd red and sweaty. My mom giggled and my dad sighed, "Girls.. Behave yourselves." I slowly got off Demi and ignored it when she poked myside for the last time. "Demi. Leave your sister alone, she's not feeling good and you need to repsect that." Demi rolled her eyes and stuck her tongue out at me. Flouncing out of the room dramatically. I snorted and rolled my eyes. "Drama queen." I muttered. Demi whipped around at my words and stopped at the doorway. "Later." She mouthed menacingly. I gulped, Demi gets even.
