Chapter 9
Anything in italics is a memory flash back.
"Are you sure you don't want to go to the hospital?" Yusaku asks still a bit concerned.
"I'm sure. I don't want to be poked and prodded by needles." Ryoken replies gripping his pendent a little tighter, remembering all the times he was forcibly injected with drugs.
"Please do it, for me." Avalon says, hoping that Ryoken will feel some guilt over making him worry.
"No, I won't go." Ryoken says slightly shivering, remembering being held down as a needle was forced into him.
"You okay?" Avalon asks worried when he sees his best friend shiver.
"Yeah, I'm fine."
"I don't know why you don't like hospitals but you can't get the help you need unless you go to one." Kolter chimes in.
"Kolter's right." Yusaku says agreeing with Kolter.
"Then you're going to have to drag me in kicking and screaming." Ryoken shutters slightly but tries not to show his fear.
"Please don't make us do that." Avalon sighs.
"I'm not going." Ryoken folds his arms over his chest and completely turns his body away from Avalon and the others.
"You're acting more like a child then an adult right now." Avalon says annoyed.
"I don't care." Ryoken replies still continuing to be stubborn. "Should I tell him what actually happened? Will he look at me like I'm a freak since I almost have the same abilities as the Ignis?" He asks himself.
"Give me one good reason why you don't want to go to the hospital." Avalon says annoyed and crosses his arms.
Ryoken sighs, "Promise you won't see me as a freak?"
"Why would I see you as a freak? You're my best friend." Avalon says taken aback.
"Because... I'm not normal anymore." Ryoken says looking a bit disheartened.
"Of course you're not normal, you're a Knight of Hanoi!" Ai butts in.
"That's not what I mean Ignis." Ryoken glares at Ai. "As you know Avalon I was missing for six and a half years, but there's more to it than that.
"I figured as much." Avalon sighs and moves a bit closer to his best friend.
"I was held captive and used to try and make a human A.I., I was injected with all kinds of drugs. Some made me hallucinate I think, bright lights and loud noises made what ever pain I had worse. I would try and attack anyone that came near me." Ryoken kind of smiled at the thought of attacking his captors. "Another set of drugs they were forcing into me made me lose my appetite completely to where I wouldn't eat or drink anything. Forcing my captors to force feed me. I think there was one they gave me that nearly killed me, I couldn't hold anything down and it was way to hot in the room they kept me in. After that I don't remember much but when I was feeling a bit better I over heard them wanting to inject me with something else. Oh I almost forgot, the person in charge is a woman. She had some kind of bright blue metal ball that whenever I was near it gave me a head-splitting headache to the point that I would pass out."
For a moment no one said anything, trying to process what Ryoken just told them.
"Does this woman have a name?" Yusaku asks braking the silence.
"I believed they called her Zolga." Ryoken replies.
Ryoken doesn't know that when he was sick Zolga had a micro chip implanted into his neck as a safe guard in case he manged to escape.
"I don't think it would be a good idea to go to the hospital. I'm sure the drugs she had forced into you are still in your system. They'll never believe what you just told us, and I have a pretty good idea what's causing that pinging feeling in your neck." Avalon chimes in.
"It must be some kind of chip that could be use to track him down should he ever escape." Kolter says jumping into the conversation finally.
"Now the question is how to get it out." Ai says putting a hand to his chin as if thinking.
Yusaku and Kolter start throwing out options on what they could do to possibly help, though Ryoken and Avalon aren't really paying much attention.
"Avalon." Ryoken says quietly to get his attention.
Avalon looks over at his beloved friend.
"You... don't see me as a freak do you?"
"Of course not. I've known you since we were kids, and something like this isn't going to change how I see you." He gives Ryoken a small smile.
"I should of known that Avalon wouldn't see me as a freak, he's loved me since the day we met." Ryoken thinks to himself but gives Avalon a small reassuring smile.
"Avalon is right, the hospital might think Ryoken is a drug addict and they're definitely not going to believe us." Yusaku says getting Ryoken and Avalon's attention.
"But how are we going to get the chip out of his neck? Kolter says, "Only a hospital is equipped to even attempt to get it out."
Suddenly out of nowhere Ryoken feels a sharp pain in his head along with a deep voice telling him to obey. He doesn't want to scare Avalon and the others so he just clenches his hands into fists to deal with the pain, digging his nails into his palm. Avalon notices how Ryoken has stiffened up but doesn't say anything at first. The pain gets worse and the voice gets louder, but Ryoken ignores them both.
"You will obey and come when called!" The deep voice boomed in Ryoken's head.
"Who are you?" Ryoken tries to ask the voice without saying anything out loud.
"Come, come now!" The voice boomed again seeming to ignore Ryoken's question.
The pain is starting to get to the point where it can't be ignored making Ryoken stiffen up noticeably.
"Ryoken are you feeling alright?" Avalon asks seeing how much pain Ryoken is in.
"No something is seriously wrong and I think it might have something to do with the chip." Ryoken says rubbing his temples. "I can hear some kind of booming voice in my head."
"What can we do to stop this?! Ai cries out panicking.
Ryoken screams out in pain as the impulses are getting stronger, making him fall against Avalon.
"Don't give in to the chip, focus on me. Avalon cries out holding Ryoken close to him.
Ryoken tries to focus on his dear friend but his will is slowly slipping away from him. Kolter and Yusaku are trying to see if they can find the chips' signal so they can hack it.
"Avalon, I feel like I'm slipping." Ryoken says weakly. "My will it slipping away from me."
"Just hang on, Playmaker and Kolter will find a way to shut the chip off."
Ryoken nods and tries to hang on, but sharp pain makes that difficult.
"Get him into the VR room." Kolter says, "We can scan him to try and get to the chips' code easier."
Avalon and Yusaku help Ryoken to his feet and to the VR room that's in the back of the truck. Avalon stays with Ryoken, sitting against the wall with him in his arms while Yusaku goes back to the computer. The door closes and the scanner starts up, Yusaku and Kolter typing as fast as they can at the computer.
"You meat bags better type faster because he's slipping faster then life points in a duel!" Ai cries out.
"You're not helping Ai." Yusaku says annoyed.
"I won't be able to hold on much longer. This may be a long shot but maybe going into Link Vrains will cut the connection to the chip." Ryoken thinks to himself trying his best not to scream in pain.
"I know it hurts but they're typing as fast as they can." Avalon says.
"I'm sorry Avalon." Ryoken says allowing his will to slowly slip away from him.
"No keep fighting Ryoken!" Avalon cries, then bangs on the door. "Yusaku Kolter hurry, he's giving into the chip!
"We can't find the code for the chip!" Kolter calls back frantic.
Just before Ryoken fully gives into the chip his hand brushes up against the wall. He can feel a connection to Link Vrains from the circuits in the room
"Link into the Vrains." Ryoken whispers out as he loses consciousness.
A sphere forms around him and changes his outward appearance to his Link Vrains avatar two. Then he disappears from Avalon's site, reappearing within Link Vrains in an alleyway unconscious. The chips' impulses have ceased since it's lost its connection to the real world.
"Huh, how is this possible?" Kolter says confused as a window pops up showing Revolver on the network.
"What's wrong Kolter?" Yusaku asks.
"Ryoken is somehow on the network." Kolter says getting up to go the room that Avalons' in.
When Kolter opens the door he only finds Avalon standing there trying to use his duel disk to see if Ryokens' on the network.
"I don't know what happened, Ryoken just disappeared." Avalon says trying to keep the fear out of his voice.
"He's on Link Vrains, how I don't know." Yusaku says from his seat at the computer.
"Is he alright?" Avalon asks with concern as he walks over to the computer, Kolter following him.
"He's unconscious, I'm not sure if the chip is in control of him or not." Yusaku says looking Revolver over.
"Well we better get to him before the Hanoi realize that he's back on the network." Kolter says taking his seat back at the computer.
"I'll be back as soon as I can." Avalon says and gets his duel disk ready.
"We'll be here if you need any backup." Kolter says typing away at the computer.
Avalon nods, "Link into the Vrains!" He calls.
His duel disk glows and a sphere forms around him, changing his clothes to that of his white suit. Then he disappears from site, appearing in the city inside of Link Vrains.
"Now where do I go from here?" Avalon asks and looks down at his duel disk.
"Well this is strange." Yusaku says as he's typing, a strange code appearing on his screen.
"What is it?" Kolter asks turing to look at the screen Yusaku is looking at.
"It appears to be some kind of code, I'll trace it back to it's source." Yusaku types away on the keyboard and quickly finds where the code is coming from.
"He shouldn't be giving off a code like that." Ai says turning to the computer.
"Could it be from that chip or whatever it is that's in his neck?" Kolter asks, turning to look at Yusaku.
"I don't know but we need to send Revolver's location to Avalon before the Hanoi detect the strange code that's being emitted by him." Yusaku says and quickly creates a map for Avalon to follow.
"Huh?" Avalon looks at his duel disk as a map appears from it.
The map shows him as a yellow dot and Revolver as a red dot, with a small note saying to go to the location in red to find Revolver. Avalon follows the map unaware that Revolver is emitting a strange code. The Hanoi are constantly monitoring the network and this thought slipped Avalon's mind at the moment, Genome is looking for any code that could belong to the Ignis when he stumbles upon the strange code that's being emitted from Revolver. He longs into Link Vrains to investigate and finds the unconscious Revolver in the alleyway.
"This will please Varis greatly." Genome says to himself as he goes to pick up Revolver.
Avalon gets to Revolver's location just as Genome picks Revolver up, "Revolver!" He calls out.
Genome turns his head to see Avalon, "I've afraid you're to late, your friend belongs to us." He says and disappears into the wall, going to the Hanoi base that is better hidden on the network.
"No!" Avalon cries out and runs to try and take Revolver away but it's to late. "Ryoken, I'm sorry." He whispers, tears threatening to spill over his cheeks.
At the Hanoi base, Genome lays Revolver down on a rectangular bed. He looks over Revolver noticing how thin and pale he looks before sending a message to Varis about having a surprise for him. It doesn't take long for Varis and the other knights to log in.
"What's this so called surprise Genome?" Varis asks a bit intrigued.
"I was looking for any clues on where the Ignis might be when I picked up on a strange code, which led me to our little friend here." Genome says leading the others to the unconscious Revolver.
They all gasp at seeing him.
"He's not, dead is he?" Baira asks a bit spooked, seeing how pale he looks.
"Of course not, he's just unconscious." Genome replies.
"Show me the code that led you to him." Varis orders.
"Certainly." Genome says happily and shows his fellow knights the code that Revolver is emitting.
"This is quite strange." Faust comments, "A code like this shouldn't be coming from an avatar."
"Indeed, we should run a few scans to get to the bottom of this." Baira says.
"Master Varis, what should be done about Playmaker and Avalon? I'm sure they've noticed Revolvers' absence." Specter finally pipes up.
"They know we have him." Genome replies, "Avalon saw me take him."
"For now lets run some tests on him to see where he acquired that code."
The others nod and quickly get to work on running tests on Revolver to see where this strange code is coming from. They keep the code he's emitting untraceable so Playmaker and Avalon can't find him. Slowly over the next several days the tests are done, Baira makes a screen appear for which she uses to conduct the tests while Genome and Faust look over the data that's collected. All of the tests performed on Revolver are painless and he doesn't show any signs of regaining consciousness, or so it seemed. While the tests are being done Playmaker and Avalon look endlessly for him but can't find him anywhere.
"This can't be right." Genome says as he's looking over some of the data.
"What is it?" Faust turns to him.
"According to the data both Revolver's mind and body are on the network. But that's impossible, this is a VR world. Only a person's mind should be here." Genome replies.
"Should we have Baira run the test again?"
"Let's look over everything first before rerunning anything."
Faust nods in agreement and they look over all the test results that they have so far, and they're both confused and curious.
"None of this should be possible." Faust says as he's looking over a scan of Revolver's mind.
"Agreed, but what happened to him to make anything like this possible?" Genome questions.
While Genome and Faust are looking over the data, Baira is running the last of the tests to see where the code is emitting from. This simple test wakes Revolver, opening his eyes he looks around but it's easy to tell that mentally he's not awake yet.
"Where, where am I?" Revolver asks not knowing where he is or who's around him.
Baria is a bit surprised to see him awake, "Just relax, you're safe." She tells him.
Revolver doesn't respond and drifts off, going back to sleep. Baria breathes a sigh of relief when Revolver goes back to sleep, seeing that he doesn't yet realize what's going on. Once the test is done she leaves him to sleep to go see what data has been collected.
"Did you find the source of the code yet?" Genome asks Faust.
"Not yet." Faust replies searching for the code.
"So what data did we collect on our little friend here?" Baira asks as she comes up to the two men.
"You wouldn't believe us even if we told you." Faust says not even looking away from his screen.
"We don't even believe what we're seeing ourselves." Genome tells her.
"Oh?" Baira twitches an eye brow up.
"According to the scans both his mind and his body are on the network." Genome says this with a bit of worry and excitement.
"His mind is also set up in a strange way, half of it works like a normal humans' while the other half works like a computer." Faust says showing her the scan of Revolver's mind.
"And what about the code?" Baria looks at them confused and not really believing them until she sees the test results for herself.
"I'm pulling that up right now." Faust says and pulls up another screen to show where the code is coming from.
"A micro chip?" Baria questions.
"It's in his neck, close to his spinal cord."
"Could that be the cause for his body being on the network?"
"I don't think so."
Genome listens in on Faust and Baria's conversation and pulls up a screen to look over the chips' code himself before jumping into the conversation, "It looks like it's a tracker, but for so reason it can't send a signal back to who put it there."
"So you're saying someone held him captive?" Baria asks unsure.
"I don't know, only Revolver can answer that question."
"Would it be possible to hack the chip?" Faust asks.
"We could try but that might wake him. With it being so close to his spinal cord it might send a signal to his brain."
Varis and Specter log in and appear in the same area as the other three knights, they only hear the last bit of what Genome has said. None of them have noticed there leader and second in command have loged in.
"He's not really coherent at the moment, he woke up momentarily during the last test but went to sleep shortly after." Baria says.
Faust runs the probability of Revolver actually waking up, "The probability of him waking up is 50/50 at best."
"Then I'd say it's worth the risk to try and hack the chip." Genome says.
Varis clears his throat to get his knights attention, they all turn to look over at him and Specter.
"I take it you found where the code is emitting from?" Varis questions them.
"We found more then that sir." Faust says.
"According to the tests we've done over the past few days, we've learned that both his mind and his body are on the network." Genome says making Varis turn his head to look at him.
"How is that possible?" Varis asks in surprise.
"We're not sure." Baria chimes in, "The tests also show that half of his mind is working like that of a normal person's, while the other half is working like that of a computer."
"Well that partly explains why he's affected by the Ignis' presence." Specter says.
"What about the code?" Varis asks.
That's coming from a micro chip that's in his neck, we were thinking about hacking it but it's close to his spinal cord. There's a possibility that hacking the chip could send a signal to his brain waking him up." Faust adds in.
"Is the chip the reason he's like this?" Specter asks curiously.
"We don't think so, but since part of his mind is working like a computer we should be able to hack it and find out how this happened." Genome replies to Specter.
"Do it, if he wakes up we'll just have to restrain him." Varis chimes in, "I'm curious to see what other things we can do with him."
"He's still asleep correct Baria?" Genome turns to her.
"Yes he should be."
They all leave the room they're in to go to the main room of the base where Revolver is sleeping. Varis goes over to Revolver and looks him over. He's pale and thin but other than that he looks completely normal.
"Start the process." Varis orders, "Specter get ready to hold him down should he wake up."
"Yes sir." Specter goes over to stand beside the bed Revolvers' in.
Genome gets to work on hacking the chip, working as carefully as he can to keep any signals from reaching Revolver's brain. It takes about an hour to hack the chip but it only feels like a few minutes have passed, Revolver is still calmly asleep.
"We're in." Genome says as he passes the screen he was working on to Varis
Varis looks over the screen, seeing several things to explore. There are five tabs labeled different things, three of them are some kind of archive while the forth and fifth ones are labeled "Personality and Emotions." He makes the screen bigger to show the rest of the knights.
"Which tab should we explore first?" Varis asks his knights.
They all look over the tabs, the three archive tabs are labeled as Memory, Extremely Personal and Identities.
"Let's look at the Identities tab." Baria pipes up after looking over the options.
"Identity tab it is." Varis says and taps on his screen.
The tab opens showing people that Revolver knows and information about them, as well as Revolver's own personal identity.
"I'm guessing these are people he knows." Genome says as he looks at the pictures and names of people.
Varis taps on the picture of himself in the archive. Pictures pop up of both Link Vrains avatars as well as what he looks like in the real world with information. Revolver sees himself as Ryoken Kogami, son of Dr. Kogami. As well as Revolver leader of the Hanoi. He thinks of the name Varis as a second name to go by on the network but not a lot of people ever call him by that name.
"It doesn't look like we're that different except for our names." Varis comments as he backs out of the identity file.
They go through other files of people they recognize seeing how Revolver sees these people in his life. They notice that he has a high regard for Avalon and Playmaker, seeing them as the most important people in his life along with another person who they're not really concerned with. After looking over the Identity tab they look in the Emotions and Personality tabs. Where they find that Revolver's personality differs to some degree from Varis. Revolver sees himself as someone others should look to for guidance not just the other members of the Hanoi, and he still hates the Ignis just not as much as Varis does. When it comes to his emotions he has a lot of pent up anger, pain and sadness. What those emotions are stemming from can't be found in the Emotion tab and they're directed to the Memory Archive tab.
Before going to look at the Memory tab they take a look at the Extremely Personal tab. This tab brings them to what looks like videos but there are chains on the videos keeping them locked. They try to click on one of the videos anyway to see if it will play when a message pops up says, "You do not have permission to view this memory, please go to a different archive."
"It must be a fail-safe to keep people out." Genome says.
Varis tries to access other videos but the same message pops up again. Revolver groans and moves on to his side to show that he's being bothered but doesn't actually wake up. Seeing as they're not going to get any where in the tab they leave it and go to the Memory tab. Again the files appear as videos but without chains on them, Varis scrolls down the page with more videos popping up. He keeps scrolling but there doesn't seem to be an end in site so he goes back up to the top, but accidently clicks on a video that had what looked like church bells on it. The video starts to play the memory.
Church bells ring loudly in the air as people gather into a building. In one of the rooms Ryoken sat in a chair looking at the mirror, his reflection looking back at him. He's dressed in a pristine black suit with a nervous expression on his face when he hears a knock at the door.
"Come in." Ryoken says, his voice slightly shaking.
The door opens and a woman dressed in blue comes in, she closes the door behind her as she makes her way to Ryoken's side.
"Nervous are we?" The woman asks him.
"Very." He replies.
"You have no reason to worry, you and Specter have practiced this for months. And just think what you two get to do after the reception." The woman giggles.
Ryoken's face turns bright red from both a blush and embarrassment, "I don't think now is the best time to be thinking about that Shing."
The woman now known as Shing giggles, "Well just think about how he means to you than." She says.
As the memory plays out for Varis and the others, it plays like a dream for Revolver. Making him smile a bit in his sleep.
"This must be playing out like a dream to him." Specter says, "He seems happy."
The others turn to look at Revolver who has a small smile on his face, then they're drawn back to the video when they hear doors opening up.
The doors to the main hall of the church open, Revolver and Avalon are holding hands as they walk down the aisle. They're surrounded by friends and family, everyone is dressed nicely and happy to see them. Revolver looks to Avalon, who's dressed in a pristine white suit, with a smile on his face. They walk up to a young man with mismatched eyes of blue and red, who has red hair with gold bangs. The young man is dressed in complete black.
"Friends loved ones, we're gathered here today in the presence of the Holy Mother, the Creator of Light to bond these two people together in holy matrimony." The young man began to speak to get the crowds attention.
Varis and the others couldn't believe what they're hearing.
The young man then goes on to do the opening pray, after the pray everyone says "Level-Link-Rank" before continuing on with the ceremony. Revolver and Avalon speak their vows to one other, looking directly at each other while holding each other's hands. Then slipping on a beautifully decorated gold arm band onto each other's left arm.
"Is there anyone here who objects to these two being married, if so let them speak now or forever hold their peace." The man in black asks out to the crowd.
The crowd remains silent, showing that no one objects to the union.
"By the power vested in me I pronounce you married."
The crowd cheers and applause, then everyone leaves to go have dinner where they see Revolver and Avalon have their first dance together as a married couple. The memory ends with Revolver and Avalon in a hotel room with Avalon sitting on Revolver's lap, and his head on his chest listening to his heartbeat. Revolver is cradling Avalon in his arms humming to make a soothing atmosphere.
"This has got to be some kind of joke right?" Specter asks, not sure if Revolver somehow put a fake memory in the archive to freak them out. "They can't actually be married, right?"
"I wish it was, but these appear to be Revolver's memories so they must be." Baria says just as freaked out as Specter.
The warm feeling the memory brings Revolver resonates through his necklace to the point that Avalon can feel it through his own necklace that he keeps hidden under his shirt.
"Revolver..." Avalon thinks to himself and takes his necklace out from under his shirt, it's warm to the touch but he can feel the loving embrace of emotions from Revolver.
"Something wrong Avalon?" Yusaku asks.
"No, not at all." Avalon replies and quickly gets back to work, his necklace resting against his chest in full view.
I had a friend on amino help me with some of the ideas and I thank them for that if you want to check out their amino page here's a link to do so http://aminoapps.com/p/b6ifemy
