This Is All I Want
"Do we really have our own place now?" Skylar looked around the empty room, she was standing in the middle of it, looking particularly lost.
"We really do" Ryder said. It was moving day, Skylar was moving out of the hospital room, which had been her home for the last 14 years.
Hannah had taken Hope for a walk in the stroller. She was fed and content, and ready for a nap, and Hannah volunteered.
The majority of the guest house was already furnished, but Lily felt like the bedroom had to be personalized, so she had it emptied and ordered a new bed, which Skylar and Ryder picked out together as a housewarming gift.
Ryder left his appartement behind, not taking a single thing with him, besides his clothes. He wasn't attached to any of the objects he had acquired while living there, he felt nothing but relief, as he shut the door behind him earlier that day!
Dave had gone back to the hospital to get the rest of her things, and then it was all done, that chapter of her life was behind her all of a sudden? She actually cried, as she hugged some of the nurses, why wouldn't she? Some of them had known her for years, they had been occupying the front row seats, following her through it all, what crazy turn of events led her here? To this place...she was someone's girlfriend, she was a mother...a daugther...a friend. She was no longer just a patient. Looking at her life like that, she suddenly felt normal. It occurred to her, she had it all? Everything she ever wanted, it ended up coming true. This is what most people strive for, right?
She was loved by someone, by her father, by Ryder...she was a mother to Hope...and a friend to Hannah and Charlie. She loved them all, she felt complete.
This was all she ever wanted.
To be loved and to love someone. That has to be the meaning of life right there?
To love and be loved. To give and give back.
"You look tired?" Ryder looked concerned, as he was guiding her gently to sit on the floor next to him. She willing indulged his concern and leaned up against the wall, realizing how tired she actually felt at that moment.
She gave out a deep slow sigh, breathing heavily, feeling a bit lightheaded all of a sudden. She felt Ryder's eyes on her, as she closed her eyes voluntarily and slipped into a comforting daze, leaving his worried stare behind.
She woke up in a strange bed with Lily and Dave sitting next to her.
"Hi sweetheart..." Dave said, smiling at her.
"Dad...what happened?" She asked him, looking at him with a confusing glare.
He just smiled.
"I think you are just worn out pumpkin! With Hope keeping you up at night and the transition, leaving the hospital is a big deal, it's taking it's toll on you, that's all...we called the hospital, they aren't too worried, they gave you a full check up before discharging you...I'm not worried" he said, but his eyes gave him away, of course he was worried.
"I do feel really tired" she said.
"Of course you do...Ryder and Charlie are working really hard, getting the bedroom done by tonight and Hannah is babysitting Hope, so you can rest" Lily said, smiling at her sweetly.
"This is actually Ryder's old room, he used to sleep in here every time he came to stay with Charlie, it just became his room - he moved in here for a while - when he left home" Lily continued, and started moving the pillows around, making it more comfortable for Skylar.
"That's so sweet...he was here a lot as a kid?" Skylar wondered.
Lily nodded.
"He was such a good kid, I really do think of him as my own son" Lily stated.
"He is lucky to have you guys, I know you mean the world to him, he speaks very highly of you" Skylar said, and she could tell her words were well placed. Lily's face lit up.
"We are going to do everything we can to make you feel comfortable here Skylar, anything you need, don't hesitate to ask, okay? I'm home most days, I don't work, so you can always call me..." Lily said, and Skylar noticed her dad looked really happy, maybe he liked the idea of some normalcy? Getting away from the hospital gave everything a more relaxed feel.
"You are so sweet, you and your husband, letting us stay here is so generous of you, we really appreciate everything you have done for us. I would be honored if you would consider thinking of yourself as Hope's grandparents? With you guys and my dad rallying around her, I am sure she will have everything she needs. I know Ryder is going to take care of her, but he is going to need your help, when I'm not around anymore." She stopped talking, she noticed Lily's face changing, her expression said it all, she just looked so uncomfortable.
Luckily Dave wasn't.
"We'll take care of her, Hope is never going to feel alone, I promise you" Dave said, smiling.
"I know" she said, closing her eyes, she felt so tired.
"We'll let you rest for a while honey" Dave said, getting up and Lily quickly followed his lead, and as they snug out, Skylar was already sleeping it seemed. But she heard them outside the door, they hardly intended her to, but she heard them loud and clear.
"I don't know how you can keep this calm?" Lily whispered.
"I have to, for her sake...it's tough, but that's life" her dad answered. His answer was followed by a long sigh.
She heard their footsteps quiet down, like their words, as they walked away.
She felt this overwhelming sadness flush through her mind, not being a part of everything seemed almost cruel. She was going to miss out on so many things, they were going to miss out on her being there. How could she make a lasting impression?
That's when it hit her, she wanted to leave something for Ryder and Hope, like letters or videos maybe? Something they would have to share, once she was really gone. She knew the day would come...sooner than she wanted to admit, she felt it deep in her core. This wasn't just a normal feeling of being exhausted, she knew this was something different. Her body just felt worn out, like she had no strength left. People always say: you never know when your time is up? You might get hit by a bus tomorrow? And it's true, you don't have a due date, but she had a pretty good idea, what was about to happen, maybe it's what you refer to as intuition?...but she was going to muster up the courage to go on, for as long as possible.
She had to, right?
She didn't want to give up, how could she. The silence surrounding her, scared her. But she wasn't about to give up!
She just wanted to sleep for a while.
And so she gave in.
