The Beach - 1 Week Later
He was holding the beautiful silky smooth ceramic jar with both hands. It felt cold...he wasn't sure if it was the cool ocean wind blowing or the coolness of the clay, but it felt cold - like her hands...that night.
He closed his eyes for a short moment, before looking to his left. Dave was standing by his left side, and Charlie's parents. He looked to his right, Charlie was standing shoulder to shoulder with him to his right. And Hannah...she was holding Hope, who was bundled up in a cute pink blanket and a warm hat to match.
It was windy and cold, but the sun was out. Hiding behind a set of clouds, hovering right in front of them, concealing the blue sky for a while, they were all waiting for the clouds to drift by, and hopefully allowing the sun to come through.
Skylar loved feeling the rays of the sun on her face, the warmth caressing her, like an embrace...she told him many times. He never thought of it that way, to him the sun was just the sun...but to Skylar it meant warmth; and security; and comfort. She taught him to look at things differently.
He thought about what Dave said, about people leaving you, it's not just about them leaving...it's about what they leave behind for you. This was one of the things Skylar left for him. Wanting to see things differently. Everything isn't just face value. It conceals so much more, if you look close enough?...
He looked at baby Hope, she had no idea about what was happening, he saw her innocent eyes stare at the waves crashing, and it seemed like she enjoyed it, her legs kicking underneath the blanket, as he looked at her again, he realized how much she resembled Skylar, she had her beautiful hazel eyes...and his nose, that made him smile. He could smell trouble a million miles away, hopefully she would be able to do the same and stay away from it. Hopefully she would see the world through Skylar's eyes, it would become magical, he was certain of that.
He had so many hopes and dreams for her...
"Do you want to say a few words?" Charlie padded him lightly on the back.
He nodded.
"Skylar asked me to do this...scatter her ashes on this beach, I made a promise to her. She loved coming to the beach. I wanted to talk about Hope having to fill some pretty big shoes, but that's not fair, the only shoes Hope has to fill are her own and whereever she might walk, I am sure her mother will be watching over her. I don't believe in angels or God or anything like that. But I believed in Skylar! She taught me to believe in her - and in myself, I am eternally grateful. I love you Skylar, I will never forget you. I will always remember everything...every moment with you is chizzled inside my mind. I can never let go. You will be with me til the day I die...".
Nobody moved, nobody said a word. He said it all.
The sun finally came through the clouds and the rays hit them like hot beams.
He laughed...he just laughed! Of course this was her final goodbye for him. The sun came out...
He remembered their first trip to the park, he thought she had fallen asleep, but she was just savoring the warmth of the sun on her, sitting in the chair, she felt awkward, but he told her not to. Skylar was the prettiest woman in the world, it didn't matter to him if she was in a wheelchair, if she had just woken up and her hair was all messy, or if she was all dolled up to go out. She always looked amazing.
He realized they were all looking at him and smiling, they knew why he was laughing. They knew he was laughing, because he remembered her like that. Nothing about Skylar was sad, she had that glow to her...no one could feel blue in her company. The way she looked at you, made you feel so damn special.
Ryder felt it. They all felt it. Some people just have an ability to make other people feel good about themselves, believing in themselves.
Oh...how lucky he had been, to have known her.
He opened the jar, slowly and moved closer to the water, they all followed him there, almost able to touch the water with their feet, he let her go!
He threw her ashes into the water and they watched it vaporize before their very eyes. Like fairy dust carried by the wind. It looked like silver rain, as it dropped slowly onto the surface of the shining waves below.
The waves carried her further and further out to sea, and they stood there, in silence, watching her go.
Disappearing.
Flowing.
Flying.
Diving.
And her physical body was gone, just like that.
But her memory wasn't.
