chapter19

"Number 018!" The invigilator shouted as he called our names serially before we would enter the hall that had cameras situated at the most strategic points. The West African Exam Council had earlier come to our school some months before, and set the cameras up.

My heart actually skipped a bit as I entered the hall. The tables and seats were already arranged and I had to take my seat, according to my serial number.

"It's not a reverend sister, after all." I breathed out as I then sighed, upon realizing that Nelson played a prank on we all.

"Is this man not even worse than a reverend sister." Adanna who was just two seats away from me, muttered and I chuckled.

Our eyes met and we smiled. Something we rarely do after the quarrelling.

We began the exam with Data Processing Practical and it was a compulsory subject to offer, in Standard High. The invigilator was so very tall with a big large scandals, bogus trouser, faded striped shirt and then an ever worried face.

He raised up the padlocked bag and showed us, asking for permission to unlock it. We gave him a go ahead and he unlocked it before bringing out a sealed bag that contained our exam scripts.

"Breathe in." He smiled and ordered us. "Then breathe out."

He then shared our question and answer papers. We were told to answer two out of four questions. Without hesitation, I chose making a producer and customer ID in Ms Access. With making a wedding card via Core draw.

"You!" I froze when he pointed at me.

"Go get a handkerchief and cover your laps." He stated and I sighed out of relief before dashing out of the hall and then returning with a long navy blue handkerchief.

"Someone is looking for you at the reception office." Chelsea came over to me and said.

The school was almost over and I was just having a heated discussion with Dindu. "How is the person like?" I wanted descriptions.

"She was dressed in another school's uniform and she said she urgently wants to see you with Zimuzor." Chelsea explained.

"Should I escort you?" Dindu asked me while I laughed and shook my head. For God's sake, no one was kidnapping me away.

"Have you told Zimuzor?" I asked.

"No. You are the first to hear of this." She answered and then I pleaded with her to escort me to the reception office.

Zimuzor wasn't in class and I was lazy to look around for him. He might me hitting on another girl, so I didn't bother looking for him.

Perplexingly, upon reaching the reception office, he was already there, laughing and talking randomly with Ezinne.

"I thought you would never come." Ezinne laughed again, upon sighting me. "How was your exam?"

"Just there," I replied. Why would she leave her school to come to mine and how could her school permit her to leave before dismissal. "I can see you are already having fun with...Zimuzor." I eyed him.

"He's quite a funny one." She said and turned to look at him, only to receive a wink.

"Well, This is my friend, Chelsea." I introduced. "And Chelsea, meet my cousin sister, Ezinne."

"I know the harlot already?" Chelsea spat out with acridity.

"What?!" Both I and Ezinne shouted. And then, lowered our voice upon receiving the stink eye from the receptionist. Actually, my reason for shouting earlier, was why she would call my cousin a harlot.

"You mean to tell me, that you know me? And... what makes you call me a harlot?" Ezinne had to chill down.

"I remember you as the girl that got my elder brother finished. You dated him for fun, even when he ignored his class girls in SS3 and went for a church rat like you. Only for you to be caught making out with his form teacher. And then got him framed up for an offence he never committed. And as a result of the allegation, he got stripped of his position as the utility prefect. Are you going to act as if you don't know Israel Elihu?" Chelsea spat out angrily.

"Well...I don't have any idea of what you are talking about. I don't know you!" Ezinne stood up angrily from the couch she sat on. The receptionist who shot her a glare, was the least of her bothers.

I twitched my lips as I exchanged looks with Zimuzor. "I see that my presence is unwanted here. Goodbye Kaima. Yeah...and you too." Ezinne nodded towards him.

She turned to Chelsea, muttering something inaudible as she left the reception office while shaking her head.

"What was that for? Is this why you escorted me? To harass and accuse my cousin?" I turned and spat out to Chelsea.

"That was dumb, bro!" Zimuzor hissed and left the reception office too.

"I've warned you guys to stop calling me bro! I don't and can never look like a guy. It's high time, you guys stopped provoking me." Chelsea shouted after him.

"Hey, you two get out of here! I've condoled enough ill mannered ness. First it was talking about a whole bunch of gibberish, Now it's shouting. Get out!" The receptionist barked. It was though she was looking for someone to share her frustration with.

Chelsea and I left the office, muttering profanities under our breathe. "That's why she's like that. She will soon die single." Chelsea hissed.

"But why will you do that?" I asked.

"What?!" She turned and gave me an angry look.

"Talking shit about my cousin." I eyed her as I retorted.

She hissed. "Whatever you heard there is true. That girl is a chameleon and I pity the guy is she's dating. That is, if there is even any."

Now, I was thinking if I knew my cousin well. With the way she stood up as if she was being pursued without proving Chelsea wrong was a bit fishy.

But then, why would Chelsea take the matter so personal when the shit happened between her brother and Ezinne. I guess that truly, blood is thicker than water. The way she stood for her brother even in his absence was challenging.

Maybe, just maybe, I would have been that thoughtful of people around me if I wasn't the only child.

"That girl is a she devil!"
