Chapter Two: Dinner-Part One
It's amazing of how frightful the thought of death could be and of how it effects people. I never realized this until today...
"Melody! Melody!" A familiar voice called a name over and over again. "Wake up!" I couldn't place who was speaking and they sounded... Excited? Urgent? I don't know but whoever they were wanted that Melody girl to wake up badly. I didn't know anyone named Melody, and even if I did I wouldn't able to tell anyone because everything was so black.
A deep throated growl erupted from the side of my head and my eyes fluttered open in both shock and fear. Next to mine was the head of a very annoyed looking brown wolf. Then a boy with black hair and pale green eyes came into my vision. He was so familiar but I couldn't place his name! "Melody, are you ok?"
I, then, realized he was speaking to me; I must be Melody. A weak groan escaped my parched lips as I sat up and gave the boy a nod. "I... I..." I was going to say 'I can't remember you' but a flashback of the horrible night when the werewolves came interrupted all my thoughts. Pain drove through my head like a knife as I looked at the boy in a whole new light: he was Jack, my brother, my friend, my only family left. Then I turned my gaze to the wolf, it wasn't the same brown wolf as that night but it was still a wolf.
I scrambled backwards only to fall off of the bed that I just realized I had been in. My head hit the floor hard and my breath was gone momentarily. I gasped and choked for a second, steadying my breathing. Jack looked at me from on top of the bed and just smiled. His smile took my pain away and gave me the courage to stand.
"It's ok, they've been given orders to wait 'til their Alphas get back." He assured me as I looked at the wolf suspiciously.
I nodded and asked, "what's it's name?"
The wolf growled and, after a moment of painful groans and the popping of bones, turned into a young boy, he looked a to be a year or two younger than me. But I had to switch my gaze quickly because apparently when they shift human they're naked. "My name is Shawn," his voice was gruff and edged unlike his softer features. Yes, I looked back at him only because he covered himself with the blanket.
"And I'm not using those blankets again," I told him with a slightly disgusted look.
"Jack."
"Yeah?"
"Dinner, I can smell it."
"'Kay, Mel, Shawn said dinner's-"
"I know what he said, I can hear you know." I went to the door and walked out into a wooden hallway. I turned my head either way and decided on the right path. I followed it and came to a stairway that led downwards, following it I found a large livingroom and an open door to another room. Voices came from the doorway.
"Wait up!" I heard Jack pounding his way downstairs with another set of feet. When I turned around I saw Shawn in a pair of jeans and socks. No shirt. Even though he was younger than I he was still about half a foot taller. Jack was on his heels. Shawn stopped in front of me and stared at my face, I returned the look. Shawn had chocolate brown hair and matching eyes with tanned skin to match them. He had a scar on his bottom lip and a strong build. His muscles dwarfed Jack's.
"Come." Was the only word he spoke as he curved around me and entered the open door.
Jack slid passed me with a shrug and I had to follow him from the noises my stomach were making.
Inside the room was a huge dinningroom with a giant chandelier that hung above a long table with over a dozen chairs. And half of them were filled! People came in and went out from a series of doors, one went to the kitchen or so I thought, one maybe a bathroom? Eh, I'm done guessing.
Shawn sat in a seat and another person dropped a plate of food off to him. Jack sat next to him and so I sat next to my brother, it was the logical move. A woman in a white apron gave me a plate of fresh food before scampering off. On the plate was a meaty steak, mashed potatoes, and corn. The next minute a boy about my age dropped off a glass of... Wine? Maybe. I glanced at Jack and poked him.
"Is that wine?"
"Yeah," he nodded and added, "but it's watered down and flavoured. Your good."
"Ok... Thanks, I guess," I looked back at my food and noticed no one was eating. I wanted to ask Jack but held back when a woman with pure white hair entered the room. A man with dark brown hair followed and a boy around eighteen walked in with a serious scowl. His hair was the same white as the woman's. I couldn't see their eyes but it didn't really matter.
The woman sat at the very end chair, the man sat to her right and the boy sat to her left. She raised her voice to announce.
"Today we gather to eat another meal that our Hunters have caught. But before we dig in we shall greet our guests. Jack, stand up and bring your sister!"
Jack stood up and dragged me up by my arm. I felt every single pair of werewolf eyes on me, my face was heating, I felt like screaming from all the feral-ness of the situation, and I almost missed what she said next.
"Tell us your name, dear." When she said this I felt as though everyone leaned in to hear me murmur.
"M-my name i-is Melody," everyone started clapping and I was surprised to see that very hostil looking scowl on the white haired boy's face replaced with a smile. Even Shawn was smiling!
"Welcome to our Pack House, Melody. I am Alpha Spire, that is my mate, Alpha Drake, and our son, Rafire." She stood up and held her glass of wine, "today we toast to Melody!"
A cheer erupted and every werewolf stood to tap their glasses with another's. They all screamed, "Melody!" as loud as they could before returning to their seats. I sat down as well, Shawn tapped my glass as well as Jack. A girl entered the room and hurried to take the empty seat next to me.
"Sorry! I got caught up with a human hunter!" She said when everyone looked to her for an answer to her tardiness. She had bright orange hair with white streaks through it, her skin was tanned almost to the burning point and her eyes were as green as wet leaves. She wore a plain green dress that helped to brighten her eyes.
Spire nodded and smiled at her over the rim of her glass. I realized everyone had began to eat and I was the only one not eating. They all ate like animals! Well, technically they're half animal... But who cares? I'm hungry! I started eating the steak with happiness when someone tapped me on the shoulder. I turned to see the orange haired girl.
"Sorry again but I missed your name."
"M-Melody."
"Well, nice to meet you M-Melody!" She laughed which made me smile when she calmed down she introduced herself as Leaf. Her cheery attitude helped my nervousness, her smile seemed to brighten the entire room.
"Leaf? Like a leaf... Leaf?" I asked her as I finished my steak and scraped a hole in my mashed potatoes.
"Yup, when a human becomes a werewolf they are given a new name. Like Spire, her human name had been Lily but our old Alpha renamed her when she was bitten." Leaf explained as she took a sip of wine.
"Oh..." I sighed and took a bite of mashed potatoes then took a gulp of the wine. It was fruity and thick but good nonetheless. "Also, why wine?"
"Because we have more than a few wine-addicted werewolves here so we do this to satisfy their hunger."
"That makes sense."
"Yup."
The rest of the meal went by quietly, most of my questions answered and my belly full. I turned to Jack and tapped his shoulder. "What time is it?"
"Uh, six-thirty I think." He responded after turning to glance at me.
"A.m. or p.m.?"
"P.m."
"So bed next?"
"Depends on how tired you are." He smiled and downed the rest of his wine. "If your really tired then yes, if not then no."
"M'kay, thanks." I returned his smile and finished my food off before leaving with a group of werewolves, nervously and reluctantly. I entered the livingroom to see people already taking seats in front of the TV. I was able to get the middle seat on one of the enpty white couches. I was alone at first until a boy with sandy blond hair and violet eyes sat next to me.
"'Ello beautiful, 'ow are you?" He asked, wrapping his arm around my shoulders.
"G-good," I tried to move away but he held firm and smiled as if his favorite football team had just won a game.
"I'm Lance, your Melody, rig't?"
"Y-yeah..."
"Wanna meet me in my room tonig't?" Lance's purple eyes held mischief.
"No." I was not going into his room with him! If he thought I'd say yes than he's dumber than a Barbie doll.
"Lance," a steady voice seemed to confront the pervert. We both turned to see the white haired boy, Ronald? Rain? Ra... Ra... Rafire! Yeah, his name was Rafire.
"Yea' Rafy?"
"Let her go, clearly she doesn't want you so just go away." He sounded like he was defending me...?
"Your no fun," and with that the blond pervert got up and left. Rafire sat on my left, not even bothering to sit where Lance had sat.
I wish these monsters would leave me alone, don't they see? I hate them!
"I'm sorry about him..."
