8 | there are weirder ways to learn about death

"I don't understand why I have to stay cooped up here," Vicki whined. "Why can't I just go home?"

"Because you're changing, Vicki, and it's not something you want to do alone," Stefan answered.

"There's nothing about that Logan guy I killed in here," Damon explained after placing the paper down. "Not a word." He picked up the compass from the night before and twirled it around, "Someone's covering it up."

"What is that?" Vicki inquired, the shiny object catching her attention.

"This is a very special, very old compass," he replied simply before looking at Stefan. "What was Logan Fell doing with it? Aren't you curious?"

"If you're so worried that somebody's onto you, why don't you just leave town, Damon?" Stefan countered.

"We should all be worried."

"Hey, um, I'm hungry," Vicki announced. "Do you have anything to eat?"

"Here." Stefan handed her a cup of some animal blood.

"What is it?" she asked and Evelyn was wondering the same thing.

"It's what you're craving."

"Don't lie to the girl," Damon stated. "It's so not what you're craving, but it'll do in a pinch, right, Stef?" Evelyn whacked Damon in the back of the head with the newspaper he had previously been eating.

"What is it?"

"Yeah, what is it?" Damon repeated. "Is it a skunk? Saint Bernard? Bambi?"

"Go on," Stefan suggested. "Give it a try."

"She's new. She needs people blood," Damon pointed out. "She can't sustain that stuff."

"Would you shut your undead mouth before I shut it for you?" Evelyn commented from her spot and Damon narrowed his eyes.

"Yeah, why can't I have people blood?" Vicki asked.

"Yeah," Damon agreed.

"Because it's wrong to pray on innocent people, Vicki."

"You don't have to kill to feed," Damon pointed out. "Just find someone really tasty and then erase their memory afterwards. It's so easy."

"No, no, no," Stefan shook his head. "There's no guarantee that you can control yourself, okay? It takes years to learn that. You could easily kill somebody, and then you have to carry that with you for the rest of your life, which, if I haven't made clear, is eternity."

"Don't listen to him," Damon suggested. "He walks on a moral plane way out of our eye line. I say snatch, eat, erase."

"Hey, look at me," Stefan said to Vicki, "We choose our own path. Our values and our actions, they define who we are."

"Okay, Count Deepak," Damon rolled his eyes, getting up, "I am out of here."

"Can I have some more?" Vicki asked as the doorbell rang.

"I'll go see who it is, before Damon scares them away," Evelyn told Stefan before getting up and heading downstairs.

"Is Stefan here?" Elena asked from the door and Evelyn immediately hid.

"Yep!" Damon answered, far too chipper to be good.

"Where is he?"

"And good morning to you, little miss 'I'm on a mission.'"

"How can you be so arrogant and glib after everything that you've done?" she asked.

"And how can you be so brave and stupid to call a vampire arrogant and glib?"

"If you wanted me dead, I'd be dead."

"Yes, you would."

"But I'm not."

"Yet."

"Where is Stefan?" she demanded.

"He's upstairs singing 'The Rain in Spain,'" he answered, opening the door for her to enter. "Knock yourself out."

The door shut and Elena entered, heading in Evelyn's direction. She ran upstairs quickly. "It's Elena," Evelyn announced. "Go to her before she comes in here."

Stefan exited the room a moment later as Elena called for him. Elena had stayed for about thirty minutes checking in on Vicki.

"Coffee is our friend," Stefan explained as Evelyn made her way downstairs. "It's the caffeine. It circulates through our veins, and it warms our body so we're not so cold to the touch."

"Well, what if I wanna drink human blood?" she asked.

"You're gonna have to learn to live with that urge and fight it on a daily basis," he explained. "One day at a time."

"Oh god!" she groaned. "Don't start with that whole 12 steps thing. School counselor has been down that road, and it doesn't work for me."

"It can work," he pointed out. "It's your choice, Vicki."

"So you've never tasted human blood?"

Stefan grew uncomfortable at this, "Not in a long time."

"How long?"

"Years and years," he replied. I'm not proud of my past behavior."

"Does this sketchy feeling ever go away? It's like I have a massive hangover," she asked before she continued to ramble, not giving Stefan a chance to answer any questions. "This daylight thing is a bitch. I need more blood. Where's your bathroom? I have to pee. Why do I have to pee? I thought I was dead."

Evelyn watched the girl curiously as she left the room. Stefan looked up at her, clearly exasperated, "I'm gonna get her some more. I'll be quick." She nodded in response before leaning against the wall and waiting for someone to show up.

"False alarm," Vicki announced. "My body's feeling really funky. It's a good funk, but it's weird."

"Hmm," Evelyn replied as the girl pulled out her phone. "Who are you calling?"

"Jeremy."

"You can't see Jeremy anymore," Evelyn shook her head. "Especially now that you're a creature of the night."

"Oh, come on, don't you start," she rolled her eyes. "I'm gonna see whoever I wanna see."

"Over my dead body."

"That can be arranged," Vicki said, stepping closer, "I would never hurt Jeremy."

"I'm not letting you anywhere near Jeremy, you got it?"

"Oh really?" she inquired. "And how long have you been preparing the 'you're not good enough' speech? I'm assuming it predates the whole vampire thing."

"Your assumptions are right, long before," Evelyn answered honestly. "Let's see, was it when you started with the drugs, or maybe when your younger brother had to take care of you because you couldn't do it yourself? Maybe it was more recent, like when you threatened me because I got a ride from your ex?" She raised an eyebrow, "Stay the hell away from my brother."

"Or what?" she asked before pushing me up against the wall, holding her arm against Evelyn's throat, making breathing difficult for the girl. "Let's get one thing straight, bitch. You are just an insecure piece of shit that plays with people's feelings and leaves. All I see when I look at you is someone who is worthless. I'm gonna see Jeremy whenever I wanna see Jeremy, because I have some fun new toys to play with, and I won't think twice about ripping your little head off. You got it?"

Evelyn pulled out the syringe of vervain and rammed it into the girl's neck with ease. Vicki dropped almost immediately and Evelyn squatted down next to her. She brushed Vicki's hair away from her face, "Don't mess with me."

She stood up and dusted her hands off before stepping outside. She looked across the yard, needing the fresh air.

"Evie," Stefan stated and she turned to see him holding a container of animal blood. "Are you okay?"

"I'm fine," she nodded. "Just needed some air, is all." He raised an eyebrow, clearly not buying it, "What happened?"

"Nothing," she shook her head. "I think I'm gonna go get some rest. It's been a long day."

She then turned, entering the house and leaving him alone.

-

Evelyn woke up from her nap some time later. Stefan and her had decided to clean out one of the guest rooms seeing as her stay seems to have been extended indefinitely.

She followed the sounds of the voices downstairs.

"She's been cooped up in your room all day," Damon pointed out. "She's not Anne Frank."

"Now is not the time for this," Stefan countered.

"If you're gonna teach her. Teach her," he suggested. "Show her what it's all about."

"She could hurt someone."

"I'm not taking her to Disneyland. We're going in the front yard," he rolled his eyes before turning to Vicki, "Come on."

"Bad idea Damon," Stefan stated as he followed them out.

"She's a vampire Stefan," Damon reminded him. "He should know the perks."

"Like what?" Vicki asked, curiosity laced in her voice.

"Like...." Damon began and vamp-sped behind her.

"Whoa. How did you do that?" she said as Damon vamp-sped to the other side, "Woah."

"Come on Vicki, live a little," he suggested. "No pun intended." Vicki then used her vampspeed and ran away.

"My bad..." Damon trailed off with a shrug.

"Really, Damon?" Evelyn scoffed and the brothers seemed to register her presence. "You just couldn't resist, could you?" She reached into her pocket and pulled out her keys.

"Where are you going?" Stefan asked, following behind her.

"I'm doing what you've been asking of me," she answered. "I'm going home."

"Why?"

"Because I need to keep my family safe and I'm starting to realize that I actually can't do that from here," she explained. "Elena told me her and Jeremy would be going to a Halloween party tonight at school. $20 bucks says that's where Vicki is."

"I'll go with you."

"I can do it alone."

"What are you going to do when you find her?"

"I have vervain," she replied. I'll get her, vervain her, and bring her here."

"And then what?"

"Lock her up, I don't know," she huffed. "I'll figure it out."

"You aren't going alone," he shook his head. "I won't let you."

"Fine, Mr. Bossypants, if you aren't out here in 5 minutes with some form of a costume, I'm leaving you here." He disappeared for a moment and came back out wearing the same thing he had already been wearing.

"What are you supposed to be?" He smiled revealing two fake vampire teeth. "Discreet."

Once they both got into the car, she drove off. "Are you going to tell me what happened earlier?"

"Nothing happened."

"What did Vicki do?"

"She didn't do anything."

"Then what happened?"

"I said some things, she said some things, there was a little bit of choking and vervain involved, no big deal." He seemed to register that she had no desire to talk about it and backed off. "I'll be back in 10."

Evelyn jogged up the stairs and entered her room, dropping her bag on her bed. She opened her closet and grabbed her Halloween costume from freshman year. She held it up and cringed internally. She had no idea what she had been thinking when she purchased a skin tight catwoman costume. Okay, she did know what she was thinking but was definitely internally scolding her decision making skills.

She managed to squeeze into it and grabbed the mask off the floor after zipping it up.

When she arrived back at the car, she opened the door and Stefan jerked back to life. He turned to look at her and his eyes widened slightly, "What on earth are you wearing?"

Evelyn smirked slightly as she hopped in and got buckled. "It's the only costume I have, last time I went to a Halloween party was freshman year. I was a little crazy then but I needed a costume now, so this will have to do," she explained. She glanced over at him, "Also, I know I have the same body as my sister but I'm not her, so look away Mr. Salvatore."

He cleared his throat and mumbled what sounded like an apology before looking straight ahead.

Eventually, she pulled into the school parking lot. She placed her mask on her face and tightened her ponytail before getting out and waiting for Stefan.

Parties were never really Evelyn's seen. The only times she went were when Caroline and Elena would drag her or her ex boyfriend requested her appearance.

"Thank God," Elena exclaimed as she joined Stefan, not noticing Evelyn right next to him. She was dragging Vicki behind her and Evelyn let out a sigh of relief. "I lost track of Jeremy," she explained. "I was worried."

"What's goin' on?" Matt inquired as he joined them.

Evelyn stood with her body turned away but so that she could listen in.

"Hey," Stefan greeted. "Uh, everything's fine."

"I told you to quit bothering me," Vicki said to Stefan.

"No," Elena begged. "Vicki, don't do this

Vicki turned to her brother, "Matt, he won't leave me alone."

Matt raised an eyebrow and looked at Stefan, "You need to back off, man."

"Matt," Elena tried, "it's okay."

"No, it's not okay," he said turning to Stefan, "What the hell is your problem?"

Elena looked around, "She's gone." The girl moved to go after her and Stefan went to follow her but Matt stopped him.

"I'm trying to help her," Stefan said. looking slightly angry. Matt let go and Stefan followed after Elena.

Matt turned to look at Evelyn in confusion, "Who are you?"

"I'm hurt," she pouted. "I've known you my whole life and you can't recognize me because of a mask?"

"Evie?" he seemed taken aback. "I thought you were out of town?"

"I just got back, figured I'd come back with a bang," she shrugged, glancing in the direction her sister had disappeared in. "Stefan is only trying to help her, he knows what it's like. He's had his fair share of problems."

"Just, please tell me if anything happens," he requested and she nodded before going after them.

Evelyn navigated her way through the school and made her way to the bus parking lot just as Vicki pushed Elena into a bunch of wooden planks.

"Vicki!" Jeremy exclaimed as she disappeared.

"Go, get inside!" Stefan shouted at Jeremy and Elena, "Go!"

Elena grabbed Jeremy and ran to where Evelyn stood. Evelyn heard Elena's scream and her blood ran cold.

Vicki had pushed Jeremy out of the way and had bit into Elena's neck. Evelyn grabbed the first thing she found and rammed it into Vicki's back.

She fell down, the stake embedded in her back, covered in her blood. Vicki's face turned grey and veiny just as Darrien's had. Evelyn stumbled backward as Jeremy shouted, "Vicki!

"Get him out of here," Elena told Stefan and he nodded, glancing up at Evelyn before pulling out his phone and leaving.

Evelyn's hands had started shaking as she tried to process what was happening. Elena knelt down next to Vicki as she started crying. She had killed her. Evelyn killed Vicki.

She wrapped her arms around her torso as she stared down at her sister and the dead body next to her. She barely noticed Damon's arrival until a crying Elena smacked him across the face.

"You need to leave," Damon told her. "Your wounds are bleeding and you need to leave." She listened to him and walked away.

Evelyn felt a tear roll down her cheek but was in too much shock to wipe it away.

"Evie," Damon spoke, pulling her from her thoughts. "You should go home, see your brother and sister." Evelyn looked up at him and opened her mouth to say something but nothing came out, "Go home."

She shook her head. There was no way she could go home after what she had done. "Evelyn, you need to go home."

"I," she managed to choke out.

"You did what you had to do."

"I could have gone lower," she pointed out. "Not the heart. She could still be here."

"Go home, get some rest," he suggested.

"I can't go back there, and see Jeremy, heart broken. And Elena. What will they think of me? I'm a monster."

"You aren't a monster," he shook his head. "Go home and get some rest. You'll feel different in the morning."

Evelyn nodded weakly, too drained to protest. She made her way to the care slowly, the drive home feeling long as exhaustion began to set it.

She waited in her car for a few minutes before finally going inside. Evelyn made her way upstairs to where Jeremy and Elena were, only she regretted it as soon as she went in.

"You killed her," Jeremy stated as he looked at Evelyn. "You killed her."

"I had to," she shook her head, taking a step closer to him. "She would have killed Elena."

"No, stay away from me," he demanded and Evelyn froze. "Get out."

"Jeremy, I-"

"Out!"

Evelyn let out a sharp breath and Elena was about to say something but Evelyn shook her head. She turned around and left her brother's room, closing the door behind her.

"Evie," Stefan greeted as she stepped onto the porch out front. Evelyn turned to look at him and he frowned, "Are you okay?"

"I'm fine," she replied as the door opened again revealing Elena.

"He's a mess," she explained. "I don't want him going through this again. He's just a kid."

"Elena, what can I do?" he asked. "I...What can I do to help? I'll do anything."

"Can you make him forget?"

"Elena..."

"Stefan, please," she begged. "I don't know how he'll ever get past this. I just want him to forget everything that happened."

"If I did it, there's no guarantee that it would work...Because of who I am," he explained. "Because of how I live. I don't have the ability to do it right."

"I can do it," Damon spoke up. "If this is what you want...I'll do it."

Elena nodded, "It's what I want."

"What do you want him to know?"

"I want you to tell him that Vicki left town and she's not coming back. That he shouldn't look for her or worry about her. He's gonna miss her, but he knows it's for the best."

Evelyn seemed to finally find her voice and shook her head, "You can't make him forget."

"What?" Elena asked, clearly confused.

"He's going to figure it out," she replied. "We shouldn't lie to him."

"You mean like you did to me?"

"And look how that turned out." Evelyn shook her head, "If he finds out later, and he finds out we made him forget? It'll only make things worse for him. Taking away his pain temporarily won't ease it forever Elena. Trust me, I know."

"He's hurting, he's just a kid," she pointed out. "He shouldn't have to go through this."

"And what?" Evelyn countered. "Making him forget tonight's events, forget what I did and not give him a choice to remember? What good will that do?"

"Damon is taking away his memory," she informed her sister. "I don't care what you have to say about it, this is my decision."

"It shouldn't be," Evelyn shook her head. "One of these days the lies will catch up to you Elena and I won't be there to help."
