11 | the scumbag crashed and burned
"So what do I do now?" Evelyn asked into the phone.
"Just wait," Damon responded. I'll be there in a minute."
"Can you hurry?" she requested. "I have things to do."
"Oh, I'm sure you do," Damon said from behind Evelyn, startling her. "You can give me that."
"Why?"
"I don't need you losing it again."
"I didn't lose it, it was stolen," she pointed out. "Big difference."
"You still lost it."
"Are you sure you know what you're doing?"
"Yes, you can go now."
"Okay, call me if you need anything, I guess."
"Have fun at that school thing!" he shouted after her as she began walking away.
"I won't."
Evelyn found a spot in the practicality full parking lot before making her way inside. The career fair was in full swing, parents looked around the room at the options for their child and the teens stood in boredom.
"Still wanna be an astronaut?" she mocked from behind Matt.
"I can't believe you remember that," he said, turning to face the girl.
"I can remember the tinfoil that you wore on your head."
"I was eight."
"You still act eight."
He let out a chuckle before looking up at me, "How are you? Elena told me you've been cooped up in your room a lot lately."
"Elena needs to mind her own business."
"She's just trying to help."
"I don't need her help," Evelyn potter out. "Besides, shouldn't I be asking you how you are doing?"
"I've had it easier. Don't change the subjects," Matt said as he looked up at the blonde who had just entered the room.
"I heard about Caroline."
"Aw, man," he groaned. "Not you too."
"Hey, I'm not a fan of her but I'm also not blind," she replied. "You two really like each other."
"We're friends. It's not a big deal."
"Mmhmm."
Matt appeared to have gotten distracted so Evelyn followed his line of sight. He was watching Stefan and Elena leaning against a wall and facing each other, deep in conversation.
"Matt," she began, noticing the jealousy that laced his eyes. "You have to move on."
"I know," he huffed. "I'm trying."
"You can do better."
"She's your sister."
"Which is why it's okay for me to say that. You deserve someone who will love you just as much as you love them, Elena isn't that person."
"Hide me," Jenna asked. No, more like begged, as she approached Matt and Evelyn.
"What's going on?" Elena asked as she approached them, Stefan at her side.
"The scum Fell has landed."
"Logan's here?" Elena said in disgust.
"Wha-Are you sure?" Evelyn asked, holding her stomach. She wasn't sure if it was nerves or phantom pain from when he shot her.
"Wait, Logan Fell?" Stefan said in surprise.
Jenna nodded and Evelyn quickly made her way out to the hallway as she grasped the vervain syringe she had in her pocket. A wave of nausea overcoming her.
"Stefan, what's going on?" Elena asked from behind her where Evelyn assumed Stefan stood as well.
"Jenna, are you dodging me?" Logan said with a faint smirk.
"It's a form of self-preservation."
"Um, Elena, why don't you, Evelyn and Jenna go somewhere else?" Stefan recommended shooting Elena a look.
"Let's go," Elena decided, grabbing Jenna's and Evelyn's hands.
Evelyn pulled her hand away, "I'll meet up with you."
"Evie," Elena protested.
"Just go."
Elena nodded and reluctantly left.
"What are you doing here?" Stefan asked as soon as the two left.
"You know, your brother asked me the same thing," Logan replied. "In fact, why don't we just skip past all that who turned me stuff and get the answer that I want? How can I turn into a day walker?"
"Damon and I are the only two that I know of."
"And Evelyn here," he pointed out. "But you're all very cagey on the how, which tells me that there is a way. You know, in case you hadn't noticed, I'm quite the celebrity in this town. It would be very, very easy for me to expose you."
Evelyn furrowed her eyebrows in confusion at his comment but Stefan continued.
"You wanna know how you can walk around in the sun?"
"I do."
"You can't," he replied. "Don't ever threaten me again."
Stefan then grabbed Evelyn's hand and pulled her away. "What did he mean by that?" she asked as soon as they were out of earshot, "I'm not a vampire, why would he assume I was?"
"I don't know."
Evelyn turned around to make her way back to where they had left Logan but Stefan grabbed the girl's arm and stopped her. "Let go of me."
"Where are you going?" he asked, still holding her arm.
"To get answers," she replied simply, making an attempt at brushing his hand off of her.
"You don't know what you're getting yourself into."
"I can handle it," Evelyn said as she continued to struggle against his grip.
"I'm not letting you go."
"You don't have to," she replied before taking the vervain out of her pocket with her free hand and plunging it into his neck.
His grip slowly released as his face contorted with pain, "Evie..."
"I'm sorry but I have to figure out what's wrong with me," she apologized, looking down at him before walking away.
After searching for what felt like forever, Evelyn finally found him out by his car.
"What did you mean?" she asked abruptly.
"What?"
"When you said that I was a day walker," she reminded him. "What did you mean?"
"That you are a vampire that can walk in the sun."
"I'm not a vampire."
"According to the watch, you are," he replied, starting his car. "I have to get going. Good luck with your...problem."
Evelyn wasn't sure how long she had been standing there before she heard someone shouting, "Fight!"
"You want us to what?" Jeremy's voice sound Evelyn made her way to where the voices were coming from.
"I'm not gonna fight him, dad," another voice came that sounded like Tyler.
"I don't think so, sir," Jeremy agreed.
"You don't fight in there like pansies," the Mayor pointed out. "You take it outside, fight your battles like men, and move on. Best lesson my dad taught me. So let's settle it. Fight."
"Come on, dad."
Jeremy shook his head, "That's not gonna happen."
"I said fight!" the Mayor shouted as Evelyn finally found them.
Tyler tried to walk away but the Mayor pushed him toward Jeremy before he could.
"What the hell?" Evelyn inquired as Alaric, the history teacher, showed up.
"Whoa," he said, "What's going on out here?"
"Just letting these two kids work it out," the man explained. "We're good here. Go back inside."
"I don't wanna go back inside," he replied. "What I want is an answer to my question. What's going on out here?"
"Who do you think you're talking to?" the Mayor inquired. "Do I look like a student?"
"No," he answered. "You look like a full grown alpha male douchebag."
"You don't talk to me like that," he said, snapping his fingers. "I can have your job like this."
"You do that Mayor, and I can guarantee I will ruin your life," Evelyn spoke up, stepping forward. "Forcing two kids to fight outside of a school? One of which is your own kid, might I add. Definitely very mayor-like. I'm sure the people would love to know who's really running their town."
"You just marked yourself," the Mayor said to Alaric before shooting a look in Evelyn's direction and walking back inside.
"You alright?" Alaric asked Jeremy as Tyler started walking away. Evelyn glanced over at Jeremy and saw that he was taken care of and made her way after Tyler.
"Hey!" she shouted, gaining his attention.
He looked up from the bench, "What do you want?"
"I just wanted to make sure you were okay," she replied as he stood up and walked over to her.
"I don't need your pity."
"It's not pity, it's me trying to be a good person."
"Just go," he said, turning away.
"I'm not going to leave you when you're upset."
"Just go!" he shouted, causing her to jump slightly. He had never yelled at her before. At least not like that.
"Uh, right," she nodded. "Yeah, I'll go."
"Evie, I-"
"No, no," she shook her head, "It's fine."
Evelyn walked away as her phone rang, "Elena, hey." She unlocked her car, "I was just headed home, where are you?"
"It's Stefan," she began, obviously crying. "He..."
"Where are you?" Evelyn asked, starting her car.
"I'm on my way home."
"Pull over," she suggested. "I'll come pick you up. You shouldn't be driving when you're that upset."
"Oka-" she began when there was suddenly a bang, and what sounded like a car flipping.
"Elena?" Evelyn inquired, "Elena!"
"I-the car, he-," she said coughing.
"Oh god, I'm coming."
