Ch. 21: Isobel

Alaric called me and Damon, and he walked in before me. Well, walked into Alaric's classroom with him, Stefan and Elena.

"Damon, thanks for coming," Alaric said.

"Sorry I'm late," I said as I walked in. "My dog ate my . . . Never mind."

I smiled, shrugging, but got not response, Damon looking at Stefan and Elena as he asked, "What's with all the furrowed brows?"

"I saw Isobel last night," Alaric answered.

"Isobel is here?" I asked. "In town?"

Alaric nodded, and Damon looked at  Elena.

*

"Did you ask her about Uncle John?" I asked. "Are they working together?"

"No," Alaric answered.

"No, they're not?" I asked.

"No, I didn't ask," Alaric said.

"What about the invention?" Damon asked.

"Didn't ask," Alaric answered.

"Did she know about the tomb vampires?" I asked.

"I don't know," Alaric said.

"Did words completely escape you?" Damon demamded.

"No, I was a little too distracted by my dead vampire wife to ask any questions," Alaric replied.

"What did she want?" I asked.

"She wants to see me, Kaylin," Alex answered.

Damon and I looked toward her as Stefan said, "Alaric is supposed to arrange a meeting. We don't know why or what she wants."

"You don't have to see her if you don't want to," Damon told  Elena.

"I don't really have a choice," Elena said.

"She's threatened to go on a killing spree," Alaric explained.

"Oh," I said. "I take it that's not okay with you guys."

I sighed when my attempt to lighten the mood flopped.

"I want to do it," Elena said. "I want to meet her. If I don't, I know I'll  regret it."

Great.

*

The last time Bonnie, Stefan, Damon,  and Elena and I were together? The tomb, and the spell backfired, letting all the vampires out and killing Bonnie's grandmother.

Because we had to save Jeremy, and Elena had an idea about how to deactivate the vampire-killing device in exchange for his life.

"Absolutely not," Damon told us.

"Just hear us out," Elena said.

"I'm not gonna give the device to Isobel so she could give it to John, who is going to turn it to kill me. I like being a livong dead person."

"But it'll be useless," Elena said. She gestured to her best friend. "Bonnie can take its power away."

"I don't trust her," Damon said.

"I can remove the original spell," Bonnie said.

"John and Isobel will never know," Elena said.

"No, I'll get Jeremy out my own way," Damon said.

"Really?" I asked sarcastically. "How are you going to do that? Because Isobel is vampire and Jeremy could be dead the second you walk in the door."

Damon looked at Bonnie. "Are you even up for this? I mean, no offense, you're no Emily Bennett. Emily knew what she was doing."

"I've been practicing," Bonnie said.

"It's not piano lessons, honey," Damon told her.

Bonnie walked toward him fiercely. "What's your favorite book?"

"What?"

"Name a book. Any book."

"Name a book . . ." Damon repeated. "How about 'Call of the Wild', Jack London?"

Bonnie turned to look at a book case, making a book fly past her and toward Damon using nothing but her magic, and Damon caught it.

Damon looked it over. "Jack London." He looked back at Bonnie. "Great parlor trick."

"We're doing this, Damon," Elena told him, directly in front of him. "And we're doing it my way. Now give me the device. We're wasting time!"

Again, Damon looked at Bonnie. "I don't trust you. I tried to kill you."

"Mm," Bonnie hummed, looking at him.. "You're right.  You can't trust me."

"But you can trust me," Elena said.

Damon looked at Elena, and Stefan watched in confusion while I was rolling my eyes, knowing exactly what was going on.

Damon gave Elena the device.

"Thank you," Elena said before we began.

*

Emily's spell book was open with the device next to it when Bonnie began the spell.

Her hands lifted over the device, making it float and with her eyes closed, the flames on the candles and the fireplace flared before returning to normal, the device on the table again.

Bonnie opened her eyes, looking at us. "Done."

She gave the device to Elena as I asked, "Great, now what?"

"Now we give it to Isobel," Elena amswered.

*

Well, when Stefan and Damon got home, they both knew the truth, at least.

I was pouring Scotch into a glass and Nikki was reading a book with her feet propped up on the couch and her back against the arm rest when Damon stood next to me. "Stefan knows."

"Kinda figured as much," I answered as I took a sip.

"You knew, didn't you?" Damon asked.

"I had a suspicion," I told him. "Obviously, I was right."

" Would you like one?" Damon asked as Stefan walked in. Stefan didn't answer. "Say it, whatever it is, purge, get it out."

"It's about what Isobel said," Stefan said.

"What about?"

"Well, I know that you, Elena have bonded, and I know that she cares about you, and . . . You care about her."

"Well, this is going in an interesting direction."

"I'm just concerned about Elena being hurt," Stefan told Damon. "She considers you a friend."

"Same here," Damon said. "Elena's a very good friends. Actually, she might qualify as my only . . .friend. Is that a problem?"

"So, at the risk of sounding like, uh . . . Like a jealous boyfriend," Stefan said.

"Oh, there's no risk," I said. "You do."

"History will not be repeating itself where she is concerned," Stefan said.

"Well, I really hope not," I said. "I mean, that path . . ." I shook my head. "Phew. That got a lot of people hurt, maimed, mangled and dead."

"Which is exactly my point," Stefan agreed, then looked at our brother. "Do you understand what I'm saying?"

"Sure," Damon said. "Sure."

Stefan came closer. "Do you understand?"

"Whatever you say, man. I mean, honestly, we're friends."

"And as a friend, he probably wasn't looking forward to telling her the truth anyway, so I say he lets you do it," I said.

"What truth?" Stefan asked.

"About John," I said. "Because I know you guys don't like to keep secrets from each other."

"What are you talking about?" Damon asked.

"Am I the only one around here who has the ability to put two and two together?" I asked as I put my drink on the table. " Isobel! Hello? She dated John when she was 15, she gets pregnant and ends up at the doctor's office of John's brother. Now, what do you think John's role is in all this? I mean, go ahead, think about it. I'll wait. Did you get it? You guys there yet?"

"So you think that John is Alex and Elena's father?" Damon asked.

"Ding, ding, ding!" I said, raising my hands half-way in the air.

"What proof do you have?" Stefan asked.

"I don't need any proof," I said. "That's a DNA test for John, Elena and Maury Povich to deal with, but I know how well you deal with these bombs, so . . ." I picked up my drink and walked toward the library door. "Sleep tight."

Damon looked at Stefan. "Oh, and when you tell Elena and she needs a friend to talk to about anything, I'm here for them."

I rolled my eyes as I left, and he followed me out.

If this ended up to be Katherine 2.0,  I was going to blow my head off.
