ch. 2: Night of the Comet

Stefan had to go clean up the mess Damon had made with the girl in the hospital named Vicki Donovan. I stayed at home, decking out my room with all the possible things I could need. I already had a flat screen and a vanity and everything like that. I just needed some clothes, a few books and movies, some different, unbland sheets and covers, and I was good to go.

I still hadn't seen this Katherine look-a-like, and I didn't think I wanted to anytime soon. I would have much rathered stayed home and kick it with a blood bag and a bag of Flaming Hot Cheetos, and I was good to go.

I heard someone knocking on the door downstairs. "Zach!" I called from my room. "Get the door!" Zach didn't answer. I sat up, setting the blood bag and the bag of Cheetos to the side. "Damon!"

I knew I sounded too lazy to get up and answer the door myself, which was actually not the case.

I could hear the door slightly opening from downstairs, and could hear a girl's voice from down there, calling Stefan's name.

Then I heard the crow cocking and the girl gasping.

I quickly got downstairs to see what the hell was going on.

Damon was standing in front of a girl with long, straight brunette hair, matching brown eyes, olive toned skin, a leather jacket on with a long-sleeved green shirt and regular jeans with a pair of black converse.

And not just any girl.

She looked like Katherine.

"You must be Elena," Damon said, "I'm Damon, Stefan's brother."

"Damon," I said in a half-way warning tone as I walked down the hall, staying back. Elena couldn't know about vampires. I wasn't going to let her know. Of course, I could always compel her later . .

No. Stefan liked this girl. I'd leave her alone.

Damon turned to me. "Oh, hi, Kaylin." He turned to Elena again. "And this is our little sister."

"Stefan didn't tell me he had a brother," Elena said, then looked to me. "Or a sister."

"Well, Stefan's not one to brag," Damon said. He started to turn for the overly sized living room, and reached a hand towards Elena. "Please, come. I'm sure Stefan will be along in a second."

They walked into the living room, and I slowly followed, staying on the steps. "Wow," Elena said. "This is your living room?"

"Living room, parlor, '70s auction. It's a little guichy for my taste."

"Damon, can we talk?" I asked in a tough voice.

"Can it wait, Kaylin?" Damon asked. He nodded over to Elena once, smirking, taunting me. "We have company right at the moment."

"Now, Damon."

"I said in a minute." He turned back to Elena. "I see why our brother is so smitten." Elena turned to him. "It's about time. For awhile there, I thought he'd never get over the last one. Nearly destroyed him."

Oh, my God, I thought, looking away in annoyance. He's gonna use Katherine against Stefan, making it seem like it wasn't 145 years ago, but maybe just a weak before we moved back here.

"The last one?" she asked.

"Yeah, Katherine." I scoffed, shaking my head. "His girlfriend." Elena didn't saw anything, and I couldn't see her face, but she shook her head. "Ooohh," Damon said. "You two haven't had the awkward exes conversation yet."

"Nope," Elena admitted.

"Oops. Well, I'm sure it'll come up now. Or maybe he didn't want to tell you because he didn't want you to think he was on the rebound." I couldn't say anything or stick up for Stefan without giving up too much information to Elena, and Damon knew it. "We all know how those relationships end."

"You say it like every relationship is doom to end."

"I'm a fatalist."

I didn't even have to look over to my side to know that Stefan was there. "Hey," I said low enough so Elena didn't hear.

"Hello, Stefan," Damon said.

Elena turned to us, seeing Stefan stand next to me.

"Elena,' he said, then looked over to Damon as he turned. "I didn't know you were coming over."

Elena started to walk over, "I know, I should've called--"

"Oh, don't be silly," Damon cut her off. "You're welcome over here anytime." He looked over to us. "Isn't she, guys?" Neither of us said anything, Stefan out of worry, and a little anger, and me waiting to she what happened. Damon turned to Elena again. "You know, I should break out the family photo abulms. Or some home movies. "But . . " he looked over to Stefan. "I have to warn you. He wasn't always such a looker."

I took in a deep breath, but Stefan cut me off before I said anything. "Thank you for stopping by, Elena. It's nice to see you."

"Yeah," she said awkwardly. "I should probably go." She looked over to Damon. "It was nice to meet you, Damon. "

Damon grabbed her hand. "Great meeting you too, Elena." He took the hand he was holding and kissed it, and then Elena started to walk over.

She looked at me. "It was nice to meet you too, Kaylin."

"You too," I said.

Elena walked forward even more, stopping in front of Stefan. "Stefan?" she asked, then next time she lowered her voice. "Stefan."

Without a word, Stefan stepped out of her way, his eyes returning to Damon, and she walked forward and walked to the door, opening it and walking out.

Damon whistled, then Elena shut the door. "Great gal. She's got . . spunk." He looked at Stefan leveally, tauntingly. "You, on the other hand, look pooped." Stefan stepped forward, not answering. "Did you overexert yourself today? Ah. Let me guess." He turned in the direction Stefan was walking. "Hospital."

"Some one had to clean up your mess."

"Well, were you successful? Did the powers of persuasion work? Remember, if you don't feed properly, none of those little tricks work right."

Stefan looked away from Damon and to me. "How long was Elena here?"

"He didn't hurt her,"  I assured him. "Or compel her."

"Are you worried, Stefan?" Damon asked cockily. "Scared we may be doomed to repeat the past? Huh. Is that why you play your game, 'I'm a high school human'?"

"I'm not playing any game," Stefan said.

"Of course you are," Damon said. "We all know the closest you'll get to humanity," he stepped closer to Stefan, talking in his ear, "is when you rip it out and feed on it."

I sighed an annoyed sigh. "What kind of game are you playing, Damon?"

"Guess you'll just have to wait and see, won't you, Kaylin?" Damon asked, smirking at both of us and starting out of the living room.

"What do you think he's up to?" Stefan asked.

I shrugged, sighing. "Have no clue. But, we'll find out soon enough, right?"

Stefan was trying to convince me to go to school. "What?" I demanded.

"Come on," he said. "We both know how close you can get to the edge, and that'll be a little less likely to happen if you're with humanity daily."

"Do you know how stupid that sounds?"

"Look, if people realize you're living here, and you're not in school, then they'll ask questions and we can't afford that."

"That's what compulsion is for," I said in an exasperated tone. "It's not like they can take me away."

"Yeah, but Damon could end up killing someone."

I wasn't going to back down. "It's not like I'm going to let that happen."

"Kay . . . "

"Stef . . . "

He smiled a little, then went back to serious face. "Come on. You don't want any innocent lives lost, do you?"

"No, of course not--"

"And do you want to stay the way you are now, no risk of falling over the edge?"

"Yeah, but--"

"It'll win you a few hours away from here and Damon."

That sounded like the most tempting part about it. I looked up. "When do I start?"

Okay, the story was that I was Stefan's faternal twin. Nobody could deny it. We looked about the same age, and I didn't technically feel like being in a grade younger with absolutely no one to talk to.

We both had blonde hair, even though his was a lot darker than mine. He had green eyes, and I had blue, like Damon's, but faternal twins could be both boy and girl, and the whole meaning of faternal was that you didn't look exactly alike.

But, for now, it wasn't school time yet, thank God. It was the night of the comet, the same one that had passed 145 years ago, around the time everyone in my family other than our dad had been turned. Mom had died way before from an illness that I had been too young to remember.

"What is Damon doing here?" Zach asked Stefan as I walked up into his room. "What is he doing home?"

"Because I came home," Stefan asked. "Same reason Kaylin's here, except for different reasons. He likes to make my life miserable. That's how he enjoys his. Kaylin--"

"Isn't like that?" I cut in with a smile, letting them know I was there.

Zach went on. "Well, he's putting us all at risk. This girl in the hospital could talk."

"She won't," Stefan answered, walking closer. "I took care of her."

"You're sure?"

Stefan let out a frustrated sigh. "I'm not sure, Zach. I don't know how well it worked." He started to put on his jacket. "I'm not as strong as Damon."

"Or me," I said in a light voice. "I'm not as strong as he is, since he feeds from the living, but, I'm pretty close."

"So what happens if it doesn't work?" Zach asked.

"I don't know," Stefan said. "I'll deal with it."

"No," I said. "I will." Both Zach and Stefan looked at me in confusion. I shrugged. "I can take care of her easily. I drink human blood, just don't hurt anybody for it, so compulsion is easy for me. I can do it just fine."

Zach nodded. "Okay."

"That'll work fine," Stefan said, and then started to head for the door.

Zach stopped him with his words. "Is she worth it? Uncle Stefan, this girl you came back for?"

Stefan turned away, not answering him, walking out of the door.

I turned to Zach. "Nice one," I said sarcastically, but not in a mean way, patting him on the shoulder and walking out of Stefan's room and into my own, grabbing my brown leather jacket and walking down the stairs, out of the front door.

I wanted to see the comet.

I hadn't seen much of anything in this new version of Mystic Falls, and I'd figured that I'd take a little tour, but not tonight. Maybe tomorrow.

But everyone was gathering in the town square. At least that hadn't changed much. Still the same buildings--most of which, anyway--but there were a few new places. I walked around pretty much aimlessly.

When someone I didn't know handed me a candle, I took it with a small smile, but didn't do much else. They lit it, but when they walked away, I blew out with an annoyed sigh, and then I heard Stefan said from next to me. "The girl's missing."

"Who?" I asked.

"Vicki, the one Damon attacked. She's missing."

"And I guess it can't just be a coincidence . . ." I said in a joking tone, but when Stefan looked at me with a hard stare back, I sighed. "Fine. Where to go?"

I didn't want for his answer, I listened out of the girl and Damon.

I'd found them. The girl was crying, "Please, stop,"

"Shh," Damon told her. "I got you."

I grabbed Stefan's arm and pulled him away from the Square and on the side walk, looking up at the building where Damon had the girl by the arm, on the edge, pretending like he was going to drop her. "No!" she cried. "No!"

"I got you," he said, and then made her move just the tiniest bit, making her think she was going to fall. "Oh." She was crying constantly. "I'm not going to drop you."

Stefan moved before I did, speeding up to the building and then jumping all the way up to the rooftop.

"Not bad," Damon said. "Have you been eating bunnies?" I zoomed up, jumping and landing a few feet over from Stefan. "Now you," Damon said, "I know you haven't been. "

Damon's hand over the girl's--Vicki's--mouth was stopping her from screaming. "Let her go," Stefan said, stepping off the edge.

"Really?" Damon asked. "Okay."

He was seriously about to let her go. "No! No!" Vicki cried.

"No!" Stefan almost yelled.

"No, no, no," I said, stepping forward.

"Take one more step and I'll push her off right now."

"Because you know I can beat you," I said.

He sighed, pushing her over to Stefan. "Relax."

"What's happening to me?" Vicki cried from the ground.

"I don't need her head. But you might." He looked down to Vicki. "What attacked you the other night?"

"I don't know," she said. "An animal."

"Are you sure about that?" Damon asked. "Think." I took one more step. "Take another, I'll snap her neck right now." I sighed an annoyed, frustrated sigh, but stopped where I was. "Think about it," he told Vicki again. "Think really hard. What attacked you?"

Vicki took in a deep breath, and scooted one inch away from Damon. "Vampire."

"Who did this to you?" Damon demanded forcfully.

"You did!"

"Wrong."

"Don't," Stefan said.

"Damon--"

"Stefan," Damon cut me off.

"Don't," Stefan repeated.

Damon picked up Vicki while she looked at all of us in complete confusion. When he looked into her eyes, both hands on either side of her head, I knew he was compelling her.

And I couldn't do a damn thing. Why? Because another vampire couldn't undo another vampire's compulsion.

"Stefan Salvatore did this to you," Damon compelled Vicki.

"Stefan Salvatore did this to me," she repeated.

"He's a vampire. He's a ficious, murderous monster."

"Damon!" I almost yelled in an almost complaining voice.

"Please, Damon. Please don't do this," Stefan said.

Damon let go of Vicki. "You couldn't fix her before. I don't know what you can do now." He smirked, and then pushed Vicki's hair back off of her shoulder and neck, revealing the bandage underneath. Before I could even think about making a move, Damon tore off the bandage on her neck, make her cry out and ripping her stitches open, making the wounds on her neck bleed.

Okay, I was better at controlling blood hunger and urges than Stefan, but I still had some problems when I smelt blood from a warm, living body.

Damon pushed Vicki towards Stefan, her landing in his arms, and I took a deep breath. "Stef--"

"Your choice of lifestyle has made you weak," Damon cut me off. "Couple of vampire parlor tricks? It's nothing compared to the power that you could have. That you now need." Stefan's face started to vamp out, the red veins sprawling out underneath his, red eyes. "But you can change that. Human blood . . . " he looked to me "from the vein gives you that."

"No," Vicki cried.

Stefan through her to the ground and to the side. He grunted, and leaned down. "You have two choices," Damon said. "You can feed, and make her forget, or you can let her go screaming vampire through the Town Square."

"That's what this is about?" Stefan asked in a semi-calm voice. "You want to expose me?"

"No! I want you to remember who you are!" He looked at me. "You're not that far off, just need a little push."

I scoffed, shaking my head, and I said, "Why? So, what? So he'll feed? So we'll kill?" Stefan leaned up and faced him levelly as I finished. "So we'll remember to be siblings again?"

"You know what?" Stefan asked. "Let her go. Let her tell everyone that vampires have returned to Mystic Falls. Let them chain me up and let them drive a stake through my heart. Because at least I'll be free of you."

Damon scoffed, shocked my his words. "Wow."

"Oh, my God," I said, sighing. "This is taking too damn long." I walked over to Vicki on the ground and squatted down next to her, grabbing her arm and pulling her up

"No," she cried.

"It's okay," I told her, and I was having only to look into her eyes once for her to be under my compulsion, then whispered to her indistinctly, to them at least. "Forget what just happened. You were wandering around and Stefan found you. None of this ever happened."

I looked away from her as Damon gestured over to me as if saying as easy as that. "Ugh," Vicki whined as I got up, backing away. At least she wasn't crying anymore. "What happened?" She looked over each of us, completely calm. "Where am I?" Her hand went to brush her hair away from her neck. "Ah, I ripped my stitches open. Ugh." She dropped her arm, but didn't seem to be in pain.

"You okay?" Stefan asked her.

"I took some pills, man," she answered with a sly smile. "I'm good."

She got up and started to walk away, down the door that led down to the building we were on top of.

Once she shut the door, Damon called out, "It's good to be home. I think I might stay awhile. This town could use a bit of a wake up call, don't you think?"

"What are you up to, Damon?" Stefan asked cautiously.

"That's for me to know and for you two to  . . . dot, dot, dot." He used his finger to illustrate three periods, and then smirked, looking at Stefan. "Give Elena my best."

He turned and jumped right off the roof, and then disappeared into the night.

Stefan showed me the "Mystic Grill", which most called the Grill, and we walked inside.

Vicki was sitting at the first table we saw, and the blonde, nicely built boy about our "age" turned to look at Stefan. "She said you found her wandering around."

Stefan didn't make any facial changes. "Yeah," he said.

"So, um . . .thanks." He turned to me as Stefan walked away. "Hi. I'm Matt."

He held out his hand, and I smiled a polite smile. "I'm Kaylin."

"How you know Stefan?"

"He's my brother," I answered.

Matt's eyebrows rose. "Really? Wow."

Time to play off the story for school, so I didn't have to be around Damon for weekdays for about 8 hours per day. "We're, uh, actually, twins."

"Nuh-uh."

"Fraternal," I explained.

He nodded. "Makes more sense. So . .I'll see you around school, then?"

I nodded. "Yeah."

I walked away from Matt so he could return to his sister, and I found a girl in a blue shirt with a black over thing, brown, long hair with eyes and skin to match.

"Yeah, she kinda wigs out," her blonde friend said from the table. She shrugged. "It's like her thing."

Stefan nodded once, then said, "Good night, Caroline," and turned back to me.

"What was that about?" I asked.

He shook his head. "I don't know."

I heard the front door bell ringing from down stairs, but I didn't bother answering it. Stefan would. Tomorrow was my first day of school. Yippee! I thought sarcastically. But at least I would get away from Damon. Maybe be not such a loner in this town.

Didn't know how I would live in this town, pretending to be a human girl while going to school.

This should be interesting.
