Ch. 12: Unpleasantville

While he was in the library, Damon dug through books and threw them down as Stefan stood next to him. "What are you looking for, Damon?"

"Not your concern," Damon replied.

"No, but putting Elena in harm's way, that is my concern."

"Hm, what are you talking about?"

"I'm talking about Atlanta."

"Oh, yeah. Elena and I had a blast."

"I get it," I said from the door frame with a taunting smile, making them look back at me. "You're bitter because one of you gets to be with the person that you love and poor Katherine is just out of reach. Unless there's another way for you to get into that tomb. That what Bree said?"

"I know you're better than that when you're fishing," Damon told me.

"And I know you're transparent when you're deflecting," I replied.

Damon looked from me to Stefan. "Don't you two have school?"

"I'm actually thinking of giving up, ditching and dropping out," I answered as Stefan backed out. "What's the point of going?"

"I see your point."

I smirked, backing away and turning out of the door, knowing exactly what he was looking for.

*

I watched as Stefan walked into the library with Dad's journal and went to Damon, who was in front of a desk. He looked up at his 50's hair style. "You got the hair right." Stefan set the journal on the desk. "Why are you giving me Dad's journal?"

"Because Kaylin told me you were looking for it."

"And why would I want it?"

"Gee, I don't know, Damon," I said. "Maybe you wanna do a little bit of posthumous bonding."

"Go ahead," Stefan told him. "Enjoy it. Read it. I have. Nowhere in it does it say anything about Katherine or the tomb or how to open it."

"I'm not surprised," Damon said. "The man could barely spell his name."

I smirked tauntingly. "I'm really sorry that it couldn't be any help with your diabolical plan: the sequel."

Damon gave me a bitter smile.

"You know, I could help you," Stefan said.

"You help me?" Damon asked. "I don't know. It seems a little unnatural."

"I'll do anything to get you out of this town," Stefan replied, leaning against the desk. "Even release Katherine."

"What about the other 26 vampires?" Damon asked.

"No, no, they can't come. They have to stay put, but Katherine . . . I would consider that."

"What are you doing? Hmm? What's your angle?"

Stefan shook his head. "Think about it."

Damon scoffed, looking back down. "Why would I trust you?"

"See, that's your problem, Damon," I said as I backed away, pointing at him. "You apply all of your short comings to everybody else." I looked through the corner of my eye as I continued to back away. "If history is any indication, there's only one liar amount us.l.p.

I left the library with a small smile on my face.

*

Elena had been attacked by a vampire. Again.

Stefan and Elena were on the couch while I paced. "How did he get in?"

"He was invited in," Elena answered.

"He posed as a pizza delivery guy last night," Stefan explained.

I tilted my head. "Well, he gets points for that."

"Did he say what he wanted?" Damon asked.

"No," Elena said. "He was too busy trying to kill me."

"And you have no idea who this is?" Stefan asked Damon.

"No," Damon answered his unconvinced face. "Don't look at me like that. I told you we had company."

"You think there's more than one?" Elena asked.

"We don't know," I said, sitting on the arm of the couch.

"Guys, he was invited in," Stefan told us.

Damon and I nodded, knowing what he meant.

"Then we go get him tonight," Damon said. He looked at Elena. "You up for it?"

"What do I have to do?" Elena asked.

"Let your boyfriend take you to the dance," I said. "We'll see who shows up."

"That's a bad idea, Kaylin," Stefan disagreed.

"Till we get him, this house isn't safe," I told him. "For anyone who lives in it." Jenna and Jeremy too. "It's worth a shot."

"I'll do it," Elena said, grabbing his hand. "I'll be with the three of you. I'll be safe."

Stefan nodded, looking up to me and Damon, Damon shrugging one shoulder while I nodded.

*

Damon, Stefan and Elena walked together into the gym while I went to get punch. I was thirsty.

I stopped when I thought I saw someone from my past--as in 1864 past.

Anna.

But the next time I blinked, she was gone.

Was it even her?

One way to find out.

I started to follow after her, out into the hall, but I saw no one.

No one was there.

*

I heard Elena scream, and I immediately followed to the sound, ripping a vampire away from her, and he stood as I sensed Damon and Stefan behind me. Damon had a stake.

"Hey, dickhead," Damon said. "Nobody wants to kill you. We just wanna talk."

The vampire smiled, rushing back toward Elena.

Damon threw me the stake, and I caught it and forced the stake in the vampire's stomach. He fell to his knees.

"Now you feel like talking?" I asked as Damon and Stefan walked closer.

"Screw you."

I smiled, taking the stake and digging it deeper and he groaned in pain. "Wrong answer."

"Why are you doing this?" Stefan asked.

"Because it's fun," the vampire said.

I dug it in further.

"What do you want with Elena?" Stefan asked.

"She looks like Katherine."

I looked toward Stefan and Damon in slight shock.

"You knew Katherine?" Damon asked.

"Oh. You thought you were the only ones." The laughed, and I dug the stake in further, making him gasp. "You don't even remember me."

"Tell me how to get in the tomb," Damon said. "Hmm?"

"No."

I pushed the stake in further.

"The grimoire."

"Where is it?" Damon asked.

The vampire didn't answer, and I drove it in further, making him gasp and answer, "Check the journal. The journal. Jonathan's journal. Jonathan Gilbert's."

"Who else is working with you?" Stefan asked.

"Who else is there?" I repeated when he didn't answer.

"No," the vampire said. "You're gonna have to kill me."

I looked at Stefan and Damon, Damon rolling his eyes and Stefan nodding. I tilted my head, taking out the stake, looking down at it. "Your funeral."

Then I staked the vampire in his heart, killing him for good, his skin already desiccating.

Elena gasped as he fell to the floor. "What do we--how are you gonna find the others now?"

"He had to die," Damon said.

"But . . ."

"Elena, he's been invited in," Stefan told her.

Hearing a door open, we saw a teacher coming through one of the door's windows.

I looked at Damon. "Go. I got this." Damon walked out, and I nodded to Stefan. "Get her out of here."

Stefan listened, and as they walked out, I looked down at the vampire.

I had a good idea of where to put him.

*

Stefan and Damon were leaning against a door frame, and me against a wall next to them as Damon said, "There's no way that idiot was working alone."

"You are," I said, earning a sarcastic, bitter smile.

"So the grimoire . . ." Stefan trailed off. "That was Emily's, right? That's what you need to reverse the spell."

"When the Founding Families burned her, they took her things, and you were hoping that Dad's journal would tell you where it is," I said.

"Look at you putting the pieces together," Damon said. "Good for you. I was half right. Well, it's out there now. Let the games begin."

"My offer still stands," Stefan said.

"Yeah, with hidden caveats, no doubt."

"No. Nothing hidden about it. No lies. No deception. I'm there when you open up that tomb, you and Katherine go, and the other 26 vampires die."

"If I agree?"

"I'll help you."

"Why should I trust you?"

"Because he's your brother," I told him.

"No, that's not gonna cut it," Damon said.

"Because I want you gone," Stefan said.

Damon hesitated, thinking. Then he nodded. "Okay."

I wasn't helping because I hated Katherine, and couldn't care less if she burned in hell.
