Chapter 17: First Dates and Fails
The twenty-second time I saw him, he was embarrassed and beautiful and adorable.
Allie's P.O.V.
I threw another shirt behind me before collapsing on the bed and groaning loudly.I had nothing to wear.
Jasmine poked her head around the door. "Why are you complaining?"
"I have a date," I answered.
Her expression contorted into one of surprise. "You? You have a date? With who?"
"Whom," I corrected.
Rolling her eyes, Jasmine said, "Well? Who is your date?"
"Luke," I said.
Jasmine wrinkled her nose in disgust. "That's the one who you almost fucked on the couch, right?"
I nodded. "So you do know him."
Jasmine looked thoughtful. "Good abs, broad shoulders, dark hair, dark eyes, he's not bad."
"Well, if I had asked for your opinion on my date, I would have asked," I said. "But thanks anyway."
"Well, I was going to help you with your date, but now since you've been rude, I won't," she flounced away, tossing her hair.
"Wouldn't want your help anyway!" I shouted after her. "I don't want to look like a barbie!"
I barely heard Jasmine's response, although it sounded similar to fuck you.
I turned back to closet and felt like punching myself. Luke told me to dress nice, and as a girl, that had multiple different meanings. Sweatpants were out of the question. I could wear a dress and heels, but if we were walking somewhere, I didn't want to have to walk. I could just wear jeans and a sweater, but it was late September and still warm out.
I decided on a casual dress with a sweater and some boots. I left my hair alone, knowing that if I tried to tame it, it would only end up bad.
I emerged from my room and Jasmine, sitting on the couch, looked me over.
"You're wearing that on your date?" She wrinkled her nose.
"We've already fucked several times so I really don't need to dress to impress," I said cheerfully.
"You're disgusting, Allie," she said.
I shrugged. "I never said I wasn't."
Just then, the doorbell rang. I opened it almost immediately and Luke smiled shyly at me. He looked good in jeans and a button up shirt. His hair was styled in a quiff and his dark eyes sprakled at me.
"Hi," I said breathlessly.
"Hi," Luke replied. "Are you ready?"
I nodded, quickly grabbing a little brown bag with my phone and makeup in it, plus extra room in case, you know, I needed to shove breadsticks in it or something.
I closed the door behind me and turned to face Luke.
He grinned at me. "You ready for the best night of your life?" He said cockily.
"Don't get too excited," I said. "The night where I almost got arrested for throwing water balloons at moving cars tops the list."
"You almost got arrested for throwing water balloons at cars?" Luke asked.
I nodded. "Yeah. And the cop said I hit some lady right in the side of her head, but the windows of the cars were very clearly closed."
Luke laughed. "You're something else, Allie."
I didn't really know how to respond to that, so I just smiled awkwardly.
We were out of my building by now and Luke cleared his throat. "Um, I don't have a car so, I hope you don't mind walking? I mean, we could get a bus if you wanted, but I figured its nice out so-"
"Luke," I interrupted his rambling, smiling. "It's fine. I don't mind walking."
Luke audibly sighed in relief. "Okay," he said.
We walked in silence for a couple moments, and the city was nice, but it was also crowded. Luke started to separate from me a little bit and he glanced back, all tall and silhoutted in the lights of the city and I privately thought he looked rather like a god, and I took his outstretched hand.
He pulled me up to him and made like he was going to let my hand go, but I tightened my grip, not wanting to get separated again. Our hands fit together nicely.
(Luke's hands were a bit sweaty but let's not mention that.)
Luke kept glancing down at me, and I kept smiling up at him. He was a solid foot taller than me and I came up to his shoulder. I wondered what people thought of us as we walked past them.
We reached our destination and when I saw what it as, I smiled.
Luke took me to a Red Robin restaurant.
He saw my expression and quickly tried to explain himself. "I dunno, just thought that you wouldn't want to go to a really expensive restaurant because they're full of snobs, and I like Red Robin and they have good burgers and I thought you would like it."
I patiently waited for him to finish talking before I said, "It's perfect. I love their endless fries. "
Luke blinked, then a small smile spread across his face. "Same."
He took my hand again, leading me into the restaurant. The girl on the front looked really bored, chewing gum rather loudly. Her hair hung in her face and her Red Robin T-shirt was rumpled, like she had just thrown it on after a late night.
College student, I thought.
I was proven right when she looked up, saw Luke and positively blanched. "Luke," she said. "What are you doing here?"
I snuck a look at the man in question, who looked like someone just told him that he was about to get hit in the face with a fish. "Stacey," he said finally. "What are you doing here?"
"Oh, you know, just searching for dolphins," she said sarcastically, which I appreciated. "I work here, dumbass. Now, what are you doing here?"
"I, um, I have a date," Luke gestured to me with his free hand.
Stacey's eyes fell on our interlocked hands and scowled.
Oh shit, I thought.
"How come you're taking her on a date?" She looked indignant, and about ready to puff up to twice her size like an irritated cat. "You never took me on a date," she accused.
Luke looked uncomfortable; his ears were red again. "That's because we never dated," he mumbled.
"That's rich, consdering you always told me I was perfect and I was really cool," Stacey snapped.
I decided to intervene before Luke embarrased himself further. "Look, Stacey, you seem really nice, but Luke is the kind of guy that doesn't really do dates. I'm just a girl he met. Let's not fight, and we'll be all good."
Stacey looked down her nose at me, which granted, wasn't very hard to do because I'm short as hell, but it irritated me. "Bitch, no one asked your opinion."
I was taken aback. "Excuse me?"
"No one asked you, you slut," she snapped. "Luke only likes one thing, and that's a girl who will spread her legs easily."
"Look who's talking," I snapped back. "What, did he fuck you then leave right after? Cause let me tell you, he actually stayed with me and fucked me more than once. Jealous, bitch?"
Stacey looked furious. She opened her mouth but Luke hastily intervened.
"Look, Allie, let's just go," he grabbed my hand and pulled me out of the restaurant.
"Wait!" I said, steuggling. "I want to go punch that bitch in the face. Calling me a slut,I should have broken her leg-"
Luke cut me off by wrapping me up in a tight hug. I stopped talking, slightly confused on why he was hugging me.
"I'm sorry," he said into my hair. "I wanted this to be a really nice date, and it'stotlly ruined. I'm sorry I can't just keep my dick in my pants."
"That's okay," I said, patting his back awkwardly. "She was a bitch."
Luke pulled away. "I can take you home, if you want," he said ruefully."
"Who said the date was over?" I asked. "We can just walk around the city and talk."
Luke smiled down at me. "Really?"
I nodded and Luke's grin seemed to light up the city. He picked me up and twirled me around, cuaing me to laugh in surprise.
He set me down and both of us were a little breathless.
"You two are so cute," an elderly lady told us. "Are you two engaged?"
Luke turned right red and spluttered in response, so I answered smoothly, "No, this is our first date, actually."
"Oh," the lady paused and surveyed us over her glasses. "Well, you two should date."
And I thought, I agree.
