Review by Faye: A World of Broken Thoughts

Title: A World of Broken Thoughts

Author: Rowena_Chase

Reviewer: Fayesther

Title/Cover: 4.5/5

The title fits the collection of poems incredibly well. What you see is what you get! Perfect!

I adore the font you used on the cover and the layout is pleasing to the eye. However, I am not too sure that the picture illustrates the overall concept of the poetry collection you are showcasing. I love the lightbulb - that's a simple yet effective symbol. But I was thinking it would be really cool if it was cracked, blown out or something similar- to display the "broken" part of your title.

Description: 4/5

I love the poem in the description, it is powerful and the words are typed out beautifully on the page. However, I think it is wasted being used as the description of the book. I think it should have a chapter of its own as an introductory poem to start the collection off. I would keep the description simple, giving a little taste of what's to come.

Grammar: 4/5

These poems are written with great care, each word was obviously thoroughly thought out. They are mostly perfectly punctuated. I had no trouble following the rhythm and the punctuation was definitely a helping factor in accordance to that.

I do have a couple of nit picks that I would like to mention regarding a couple of the poems:

In "Full Stop", I believe the poem would flow better if you separated the lines with commas rather than full stops, keeping just one full stop at the end. Using just the one full stop at the end would help drive home the concept of this poem.

In "Pretend" - putting emphasis on certain pronouns would help put across the emotion of the piece.

-"I know I would."

-"... if I was her."

-"... all I ever see is you."

Writing Style: 4.5/5

This collection of poems, at first glance, look like they are not following a logical pattern - this works perfectly for what I think you are trying to accomplish (broken thoughts). Our thoughts don't follow a logical pattern, they are fleeting, erratic and seemingly come from nowhere at times. Fab work!

The titles of each poem are well thought out and it was refreshing to see that you did not go for the obvious choice. For example, you didn't call "The End"- "Final" ("The End" was definitely the more powerful choice). Some titles made more sense once I had read the whole poem and I like that! I don't think poetry should be spoon fed to the reader. Poetry should make the reader stop to think!

The only title I wasn't sure about was "White Flag" I don't think it is the best fit for the poem you wrote. White flags are waved in surrender and I read this piece more as someone squaring up to their adversary. I would suggest calling it "Red Flag" instead- a flag of warning!

Originality: 5/5

A great variety of thoughts expressed in beautifully worded poetry showing deep complex thoughts of betrayal and insecurities. You also included a sense of humour to break up the tension. I found this very impressive as nothing felt out of place. You brought a good balance of originality and cliché to this collection which worked brilliant for the original concept of your book. Well done!

OVERALL SCORE: 22/25

I adored this poetry collection. I read through it a number of times (I'm not sure how many now, lol) and I would not hesitate to read through them over and over again!

My favourite ones are:

- "Mostly Complete"

- "Timeless Beauty" -- just brilliant!

This book is incredible and I am certainly willing to read more of your writing soon!
