WARNINGS: MAJOR CHARACTER DEATH
Black. That's all Cross could see. Just black. When he tried to open his eyes, he discovered—much to his horror—that he was blind. However, whether or not it was temporary or permanent was the question, but right now, that was not his biggest concern. Cross tried to focus his hearing instead, seeing as his sight didn't work. He wanted to try and figure out where he was first before panicking.
Faint mumbles, beeping, and the sound of magic being prepared. 'I must be in Zoie's room... But why? I don't recall getting hurt... Hmm, well, I'll just ask later.' Cross felt himself grow tired again, but desperate shaking awoke him. Who was this person, and why were they shaking him awake?
Cross's question was quickly answered when they spoke.
"Don't go to sleep... Stay awake... Please..." Nightmares desperate voice cracked, most likely from crying.
But why?
Cross saw no reason for Nightmare to be crying over him. It's not like Cross was wounded... But, Nightmare's voice irked Cross nonetheless.
Cross shifted -or rather, tried to- in an attempt to get up and comfort the crying Nightmare. Hug him, or something like that. Nightmare seemed to enjoy Cross's hugs quite a bit, and they would always cheer up the dark being. But, when Cross tried to move, he found he could only just barely twitch. It was as if his whole being was being weighed down by an invisible force far stronger than gravity. It made Cross panic a bit.
It was at this point that Cross realized that he also couldn't speak properly. He could only mumble quietly, and that was an impressive feat on it's own.
Nightmare seemed to hear Cross's pitiful attempt at speech, for he leaned in and mumbled for Cross to repeat his words.
'Why... Crying...? -at's wr-ong...?" Nightmare noticed just how much energy it seemed to take for Cross to speak, and started to cry once again, confusing the smaller. However, Nightmare's warmth didn't last for much longer, as a sharp and professional female voice spoke—most likely Zoie—and told Nightmare that he needed to leave Cross alone. Cross went to object, but no words came out. He tried moving, but he couldn't even manage that. Nightmare, on the other hand, would not go down easily, and immediately objected for leaving.
However, before much more could be said, Cross's voice came back. It was nothing more than a hoarse whisper, but it was there.
"Sunshine..."
"Wh-what..?" Nightmare spoke, confused and worried.
"My world.. Surface... All back.. H-happy.. " Tears flowed down Cross's cheekbones, and a wide smile stretched across his features.
"Wha.. Wait-! No, NONONONO!" Nightmare had quickly realized what was happening, and wanted to do everything he could to prevent Cross's inevitable death. Yet, a part of him knew that it was entirely hopeless. Cross was going to die.
And it was all.
His.
Fault.
