Chapter 9
"Satsuki."
The two girls were sitting next to each other as Tsuki and the green haired boy were about to battle for their first time. It had been awkward silence for the first minutes, so Saiko decided to break it.
"What?"
Saiko was surprised from the hostility behind Satsuki's speech.
"Um, I was gonna say that-"
"So now you want to talk to me?" Satsuki snapped. "I'm sorry, I thought that you were busy ignoring me."
"Satsuki-"
"Well, what if I don't want to talk to you right now? Sorry."
The stubborn redhead turned her head away, leaving Saiko stunned.
What just happened? The bluenette was incredibly confused. She'd wanted to talk to Satsuki normally and apologize, but all of a sudden, Satsuki had turned hostile. What even?
Why was Satsuki suddenly so moody?
A scream was heard from the arena as the green haired boy had been disarmed. He activated his power, but it only seemed to make it worse. Lightening struck the ground, hitting nowhere near the large monster. It swung its hand, and the boy went flying.
Saiko looked next to her. Satsuki was clenching her fists, on the edge of her seat as her red hair flowed in the wind. Saiko still wasn't quite used to the length of her hair, to be honest.
The boy let out a horrified cry as the iron monster loomed over him. He tried to ward it off, but without his weapon, he couldn't do much.
Smash.
Satsuki's hands flew to her mouth as the boy was crushed. The monster then proceeded to eat the green haired boy, Saiko not flinching.
"N-no!" Satsuki couldn't stop herself from crying out. "He's fine! There's no way-"
She felt tears coming, and she choked them back. Despite the boy scrutinizing her and cutting her hair off, he didn't deserve death. Satsuki didn't want the boy to die- he didn't deserve it. No one deserved death. It was the first death she'd ever witnessed, and it certainly wouldn't be the last.
Saiko, on the other hand, remained perfectly composed. Death didn't bother her. She knew it should've... but it didn't. That boy deserved it. He'd been rude, making Satsuki cry, he deserved to die. At least in her book. The only thing she regretted was the fact that he suffered a much less painful death then he deserved.
Out of instinct, Satsuki's hand shot out and squeezed Saiko's, tears welling up in her eyes. Saiko stared at the redhead, surprised since she figured the girl was still angry with her, but it seemed to not matter anymore. Satsuki looked traumatized, and Saiko wrapped her arm around the redhead's shoulder and pulled her into her arms.
The normally cheerful girl burst into actual tears as she tried to keep her sobbing to a minimum. Saiko's hand covered the girl's eyes, preventing her from seeing the monster anymore.
"Why did he- why did he d-die," Satsuki choked out. "He didn't deserve that... he didn't..."
"Satsuki, he was a jerk," Saiko ran her hand through the girl's hair. "He cut your hair. He said such terrible things about you-"
"He didn't deserve to die," She bit her lip. "Everyone's mean sometimes. Maybe he just had a bad day. He said he didn't like children. Maybe he was nice to other people... he didn't deserve death!"
"Sure," Saiko agreed to calm Satsuki down. "You're right."
Saiko disagreed with that, but Satsuki was her first priority right now. Hopefully this incident would wash away the problems they'd had.
"S-Saiko," Satsuki hiccuped. "Why would Rosalina and Mario make this whole... arena battle?"
"Cause they're monsters," Saiko frowned. "Do you see now? This is what they'll do. They want us to suffer, to hurt, to die."
"But... they raised me. Rosalina read to me. Mario adopted me. They-"
"The worst monsters appear as friends," Saiko replied softly. "I know it's hard to understand, but-"
"Tsuki's going," Satsuki interrupted, obviously still having faith in her guardians. "I... I don't even want to watch..."
"Be hopeful. She's your friend, after all. She'll do well."
"I hope so..."
Tsuki walked out into the arena, swinging her silver axe confidently. Her blue hair blew wildly in the wind, as the next monster appeared.
It was a giant cross between a wolf and a bear. It was... well, huge. It blew a huge breath of fire, making Satsuki gasp in shock. Tsuki easily dodged it, her axe glinting in the light.
Her axe swung and cleanly hacked at its claws, chopping one off. It jumped and landed again, the ground shaking and Tsuki was enveloped in dust. She couldn't see anything.
Smack!
The claw of the monster punched Tsuki, and Saiko expected the girl to go flying across the arena. Instead, she saw a crystallized Tsuki, holding up against the creature as it shrieked in pain, it's claw breaking.
Her axe swung, its blade enveloped in the same crystal substance. It slammed into its chest, and she dug her blade down, slicing it in two.
"Satsuki, you can look now," Saiko told the redhead. "She's alive... and she won."
"S-she did?" Satsuki peeked her head up to see the smiling bluenette. "Thank goodness..."
"Yeah.."
The two were silent for a moment.
"I really am sorry about how I behaved," Saiko broke the silence. "You have no idea..."
"It's okay," Satsuki nodded. "I get it."
Silence.
"So," Scarlet popped her head in between the two, startling the children. "Everything good now?"
"Scarlet!"
