Chapter Seven
Bailey gazed out at the small city, the sun was almost completely set, but even with the little amount of daylight that was left the place was still bustling with energy. Men and women went about their business in the small area, which was set up like a market, while small children laughed, playing with each other out in the streets.
In the distance, she guessed no more than mile away, she could see a few enormous statues were being worked on.
Bailey's jaw dropped and she stepped back until she was stopped by one of the pillars. She leaned against it until her legs gave out. Her entire body shook. It shook from disbelief and fear.
Placing her face in her hands she began to silently cry. Everything that she had back home and everything that she had worked so hard for was ripped from her. She never wanted this. She wanted to go home.
That's all she wanted to do.
"How on earth did I get here in the first place?!" She cried out, feeling anger beginning to replace her shock and fear. But she knew that she wasn't going to get that answer anytime soon—if at all.
"The Gods have brought you to us."
Bailey's head snapped to the right, looking up at Bes with red eyes, tears continuing to stream down her face. Quickly, she rubbed at her eyes and face, trying to remove any traces that she had broken down because, all of a sudden, she felt vulnerable and weak and she did not want anyone, least of all Bes, to see her like that.
Clearing her throat, she spoke but her voice was barely above a whisper. "I do not believe in such things. Not anymore."
Bes contemplated his words for a moment. "Do people not believe in the afterlife where you come from?"
"Where I come from its called 'heaven'. And, no, no I don't." She began, "Both of my parents were taken away from me. I may have lost them in different ways, at different times, but they were still taken away from me. Explain to me why, if the Gods love all people then why allow for something like that happen to someone? Why make them suffer in such a way?"
Bes couldn't give an answer. But his silence was enough for Bailey.
"Exactly. And I better not hear that things happen for a reason. I don't believe in that either."
"You don't believe in very much, do you?" Bes asked. She gazed back up at him and saw that he wasn't looking at her, but rather, he was looking out at his Kingdom.
"If it can be explained." She nodded, replying with a shrug. "Then, yes, I believe in it."
"Does that include where you are now?" The Pharaoh asked, finally looking at her. His dark eyes piercing her and, given the tone of his voice, she suddenly felt as though she was being mocked.
She huffed, feeling defensive. "Well, I can't explain it, but as soon as I do, I'll let you know."
"I am most certain that you will." Bes made his way to the door. "Follow, it is time for everyone, except for the servants, to go retire for the evening."
"Now?" Bailey asked with confusion. It didn't even look like it was even eight o'clock yet. "It's still daylight and everyone is going to bed now?"
Bes turned, his form towering over her, and Bailey could practically feel the anger emanating off of him. "Does it inconvenience you, woman?"
"No, just find it weird is all." Bailey snapped. "Also, this 'woman' has a name. Perhaps you should use it sometime."
The Pharaoh smirked, taking a step back. "Ah, and there it is."
A look of confusion crossed Bailey's face. There what was?
"That fighting spirit I saw when we first met." He then began circling her, like an animal would their prey. "Now why were you bawling like a child?"
"I was upset!"
"Why?" He smirked, knowing full well that he was ruffling her feathers. She knew that he knew it. "Because you are starting to believe that you are, in fact, in another time?"
"Are you telling me that this is just some sort of messed up nightmare that I stumbled into?"
"Nightmare?" Bes replied, looking more than a bit miffed by her statement. "Not at all. However, I believe that you are subconsciously convincing yourself that you have come to these lands, not knowing how, but you think it is true that you are in a time long past."
His words held meaning, that much was clear, and she didn't like it at all. Reluctantly, she agreed to what he said and even though she was dubious with his claims.
"You will follow two paces behind me, woman."
The audacity of this man!
She didn't care if this man was one who not many would reckon with. She was going to beat his head into the wall soon if he didn't back off with calling her that.
Bailey had no qualms with telling him as much. He gave her a chilling look.
"Do you want to spend another night down in the dungeons?"
Her shoulders sagged and she growled. "No."
"Then do as I say."
Various scenarios on how she could make his life a miserable hell, as long as she was there, popped into her mind and she found herself smiling.
Okay, fine. If this was how it was going to be, she had no problem fighting back.
"Yes, your majesty."
As they rounded a corner they met with a woman and a male. Both of whom Bailey remembered seeing back in the throne room during that little voodoo spell they had pulled after she had woken up. Both of them bowed their head. "My Pharaoh."
"Rise." Bes commanded. "This is Mahina and Amun," he told Bailey. "Two of my royal court members." He then addressed the duo. "Is everyone retiring to their bed chambers?"
"Uh, yes sire." Amun gazed upon Bailey with a concerned look that soon turned to that of displeasure. "I see you have found her. You should know better than to turn away when someone is speaking to you. Especially to the Pharaoh."
Bailey snapped. "I've had one hell of a day, alright? Okay? So, the next person who starts complaining to me about something I have done, I'm going to shove something hard so far up their arse they'll walking like a duck!"
"She is quite bold, my liege." Mahina commented drily as she shot Bailey a disapproving look. "You should be terrified to even utter a single word towards our great King and here you are being an insolent little wench."
"That is enough." Bes put himself between both women, knowing that Bailey would indeed do as she'd described and attack Mahina. That he had no doubt.
Leaning in closer to Mahina and Amun Bes spoke quietly. "Do you realize that it has been a trying day for all of us? The woman has gone through enough turmoil and should not be put through anymore today. Both of you are dismissed. Go to your bed chambers. We will discuss this when we are all refreshed."
"My King, after the little episode that she had shown earlier would you like for me to call the guards and get them to escort her to the dungeons again?"
"That is not necessary, Mahina." Bes held his hand up, interrupting her as she began to argue. "Naoon will escort her. Fetch her."
Both bowed, their bare feet padding against the floor. He turned back to Bailey again who had stayed quiet throughout the exchange. "As you are from the future and are not accustomed to our way of life I will order two of my finest guards to be with you at all times. Especially since your strange clothing and the...paleness of your skin will cause unrest, possibly outrage, amongst the people and I do not think that you would want that, would you?"
Another bonus point for the 'King'. Bailey shook her head and sighed, not feeling up to arguing anymore as exhaustion once more took over.
Neither of them spoke as they slowly made their way along the corridors of the palace. Time seemed to pass by at a snail's pace before a servant, perhaps at the age of twelve came running down the hall, stopping a few feet away and kneeling down.
"My King." The girl greeted with a bowed head.
"Naoon. You will escort Bailey to one of the guest rooms and you will be her own personal servant."
"I don't need..."
Bailey's sentence faded on her tongue by the scowl she received from Bes. So much for being able to hold her own against him.
"Yes, My King."
"You may rise."
Naoon quickly got to her feet though kept her head slightly bowed out of respect to Bes.
"Both of you may retire for the night." Bes stated, turning to Bailey. "Our conversation will continue on the morrow."
"Looking forward to it." Bailey said with a hint of sarcasm. "Good night, Bes."
"Likewise."
After a final bow Naoon led Bailey down the corridor and once they were out of sight Bes went to the wall and leaned against it, looking up at the ceiling and wondered why he was feeling compassion. What was it about this woman that made him feel...different?
