For the first time in a long while, Egypt was blessed with a bout of rain and coupled with the slight breeze that accompanied it the temperature not only in the kingdom had lowered, but also inside the palace.
Bailey had always felt solace whenever it rained back home, listening to the pitter-patter sound of the rain as it hit the pavement as both her and her mother sat on the front porch of her grandparents home.
Even though it had been so long since she had been back in her own time that Bailey couldn't help but wonder how her grandparents, uncles, aunts, cousins, friends, and colleagues were doing; wondering how much things have changed since she's been there.
If any changes at all.
She missed doing things that she used to do and with whom she did those things with, and as of late, with her ninth month of pregnancy fast approaching she was missing it even more.
Hopefully as soon as she birthed their little one and be able to hold him or her that those feelings and thoughts would disappear for the time being.
At least she hoped.
Sighing, she leaned against the balcony railing of hers and Bes' bedchamber and glanced out at the dark skies, rain continuing its assault on the land.
She winced as she felt pain in her abdomen, wrapping around to her back and it increased in intensity as Bailey leaned against the railings of the balcony, focusing on keeping herself calm as it finally dissipated.
That was the fifth one? No. More like around ten in the last hour.
Bailey knew what those cramps mean.
She was in labor.
Straightening back up, Bailey retreated back into the room, sitting on the bed and called for one of the guards to bring her the midwife and palace physician. Explaining to him, in small detail, what she was experiencing.
He nodded, "Do you wish for the Pharaoh to be summoned as well, my Queen?"
"No. No need to worry him for the moment." Bailey said, "If the need arises, I'll let you know."
The guard wanted to argue, she could see it in his eyes and he opened his mouth to speak but decided against it, and bowed, exiting the room swiftly.
She smirked, the poor guy didn't know how to approach a pregnant woman, but with his own wife beginning to show in her pregnancy that Bailey was certain he would manage just fine, after all, he was dealing with her as much as Bes was.
It was sort of entertaining in a way.
She rubbed her swollen belly and smiled, "Anytime soon, eh kiddo?"
She was greeted with a kick to the ribs.
"Ugh, thanks kid."
Bailey paced the room, her mind going a mile a minute, her heart thumping madly in her chest.
If the midwife and doctor say that she wasn't in labor Bailey could already feel the sting of disappointment.
She honestly just wanted to get this pregnancy done and over with.
It had felt like an eternity since that had found out she was expecting, and everyone was just as excited as both her and Bes.
A knock on the door came before her midwife and the physician came in, supplies in hand.
Her midwife, Meremut, smiled and took Bailey's hand and guided her over to the bed.
"How are you feeling, my lady?"
"Nervous. Excited." Bailey replied after a moment. "Just to name a couple. Could this possibly be it?"
Meremut let out a giggle, "Hopefully it is. With what the guard has informed us, it would not be surprising if we will greet the newest prince or princess of Egypt last this evening, my lady."
And it was true what she said, she had progressed surprisingly well and even though the pain was becoming even more of a nuisance, she was happy that soon she'd be able to meet her little man or lady.
Bailey groaned through the latest contraction, rubbing the underside of her belly as she gulped for air.
"Ugh, that stung."
Meremut sat up from putting pressure on Bailey's back and nodded, grabbing onto a goblet on the stand beside the bed she held it to Bailey's lips, encouraging her to drink.
Bailey shook her head. "I'm... I'm good for right now. Where's Bes?"
"He is pacing about in the corridor--"
"The hell is he doing out there?" She snapped, "Tell him to get his ass in here."
"Yes, my lady."
Another contraction was beginning and Bailey leaned forward, feeling Meremut's hands on her lower back, massaging the area and as the pain reached it's peak she let out a strangled cry.
God! When was this torture going to be over?
"My queen, we must have you on your back so we can check you."
Bailey nodded and slowly, but surely, did she do as instructed.
A thin sheet was placed over her and the midwife reached underneath and checked.
A smile graced her lips. "You are nearly there!"
"Thank God." Bailey whimpered, closing her eyes and allowing the grip she had on the sheets to lessen a bit before opening her eyes back up again and when she did she was met by her husband's concerned gaze.
He hesitantly made his way over to her, and carefully sat down beside her, grabbing her right hand and holding it within his, giving it a gentle and reassuring squeeze. "Anything the matter?"
Bes received a blank stare for a moment. "No. Can I not have my husband here? After all you are the one who put me in this position. If I'm going to suffer, then you will too."
Bes' brows shot up in surprise at her words. "I am not the one ready to give birth to our child."
"Perhaps not but you are going to hold my hand and help me through the rest of this damn shit."
Surprisingly, instead of Bes saying anything he wisely kept his mouth shut, knowing how Bailey's temper worked, and where she was at the very end stages of her pregnancy, he didn't want to end his life just yet.
Besides, before he could even think of saying anything his attention immediately went to Bailey as she squeezed his hand in a tight grip, almost making him wince, but he did nothing of the sort and rather than pull his hand away he brought his other one and placed it over top of hers, rubbing his thumb over the back of it, leaning in he whispered words of encouragement.
Neither of them noticed the smile that played out on Meremut's and the Physician's faces as they looked to their Pharaoh and Queen as he comforted and supported her throughout the rest of her intense labour.
Bailey had, multiple times, continually insisted that she was unable to continue on that she was giving up, but each time Pharaoh was there to ensure that she took it one step at a time.
It was nearing nightfall and Bailey's latest contraction left her shrieking, making the entire palace feel as nervous and as anxious as Bes felt, even if he didn't show it. As the pain died down Bes took a cloth from the basin on the bedside table and dabbed Bailey's brow.
She was panting, sweat poured down her face and panic was evident on her face as she shook from her efforts.
"H-how much longer?" Bailey gasped, falling back onto the pillows her eyes sweeping over the ceiling, trying every thing under the sun that she could think of to keep her mind at ease and to not think about the pain.
Meremut looked up from her position, "We will need you to bear down twice more, my Queen. Soon enough your babe will be in your arms."
"I-I don't want to do this anymore."
"You must!"
"I can't."
"My Queen, you can." Meremut urged, "Now, we need you to push. Help us to help you."
And so Bailey did, she held onto Bes for dear life as the next couple of pushes felt like an eternity and she never missed how dangerously dark around the edges her vision got from her over-exerting herself, and up until that point she was wondering if she'd be able to make it out of this alive.
However, as soon as she heard the cries of her and Bes' child, those thoughts completely diminished as she peered up at Bes through half-lidded eyes and saw his expression softening as he took the bundle from the Physcian and Bailey smiled, seeing unshed tears forming in his eyes.
"Bes?" She whispered, catching his attention, and he looked to her quickly as he turned his body fully until he was situated directly beside her, his face towards her. He held their child out to her and with shaky arms immediately brought the child to her chest and cried.
And as she held out her pointer finger to the babe, the little one grabbed hold with a surprisingly tight grip for an infant.
"We have a son, my queen." He choked out in a whisper, and Bailey lowered her arms slightly so she could lean forward a bit without fear of crushing their son and kissed Bes on the lips and knew as soon as their son was laid in his own arms that he would be a loving and caring father.
Bailey could feel it in the way he kissed her back and when they pulled away he laid his forehead against hers.
"Well done."
She smiled.
The palace physician and Meremut stood at the edge of the bed and it was the physician that spoke. "Congratulations to both of you."
Bes regarded them both with a nod and with a wave of his hand they bowed and left the room quietly.
As Bes and Bailey stared at their newborn Bes cocked his head to the side, looking to be deep in thought.
"Everything alright?"
"Quite." He assured her, "I was merely contemplating something."
"Oh? And what would that be?"
"What the child's name shall be." He replied, "What do you think of the name Rameses?"
Rameses DuMont was the first thing that popped into her head and Bailey had to admit that it sounded quite nice, and as she tested it out for her own humour a smile grazed her lips as her gaze shifted back to Bes and saw that he was watching her, waiting patiently for her respond.
"I think it is a wonderful name."
Bes nodded, placing a large gentle hand on the child's head and smiled, "Rameses, Prince of Egypt."
