~~~~~
Thomas had been feeling horrible for most of the morning. He didn't understand why. He went to bed happy last night, had everything he needed, and was ahead of schedule, yet he was just so down in the dumps. He tried focusing on something happy like cute cat videos or his friends, but what should have cheered him up was just making him even sadder. He was so sad he couldn't even finish his breakfast.
He curled up on the couch, after discovering his efforts were fruitless and began to rock himself, much like his mother did when he was crying as a child. He felt useless in every which way and grabbed a hoodie, hoping it would help, but he still felt tears pricking at the corners of his eyes.
A presence materialized next to him, and a hand began to run through his hair comfortingly. Thomas's sniffles slowly subsided as he leaned into the touch and laid his head on the owner of the hand's lap. As his eyes fluttered open, the human was quite surprised to find black skinny jeans instead of cargo pants or jeans.
"Virgil...?" Thomas whispered quietly.
"Shhhh..." He shushed him gently and pulled him closer.
"I feel...I feel so bad...Virge." His voice broke a little, and the anxious aspect gave a sympathetic frown.
"I know Thomas."
"Why...?" Thomas choked back a sob, feeling a small wave of relief hit him as Virgil cuddled him closer.
"It's ok to be sad sometimes. Even if there's no reason. Logan told me that sometimes if one experiences too much happiness, there might be an imbalance of hormones. And the body would need to adjust the imbalance by..." Thomas nodded as Virgil's voice trailed off, indicating he understood.
"By...being sad..." Thomas finished. "I don't like it though. I don't like being sad for no reason."
"Neither does Patton." Virgil replied sadly.
"Oh no...oh no. Patton." Thomas whispered and quickly wiped his eyes. He summoned the moral aspect and his fears were confirmed as he appeared, curled up and bawling on the carpet of the living room.
"Oh, buddy..." Thomas crawled over to the saddened aspect and gathered him, leading him over to the couch where Virgil was sitting. The anxious aspect reached out to Patton.
"I can take it from here, Thomas." He was skeptical, but helped Patton secure himself in Virgil's arms. Thomas's fears quickly melted away as he watched the moral aspect desperately cuddle up next to the ex-dark-side.
"Awww..." Thomas felt the knot in his chest loosen ever so slightly at the cute scene in front of him. He took a deep breath and sat on the other side of the couch, giving his two aspect's whatever space they needed. Never before had he seen Virgil cuddle anyone like that and it was almost refreshing to see just how much the anxious aspect cared about Thomas's emotional well-being.
With each deep breath that escaped and refilled Thomas's lungs successively, he felt himself slowly come back into an emotionally stable environment. He stole a glance at the two cuddling aspects and was relieved to find that Patton had stopped crying and was only sniffling into the crook of Virgil's neck. Thomas smiled at the hooded aspect, who merely rolled his eyes as if to say "dont expect me to do this all the time." But Patton's arms tightening around Virgil's form told Thomas that cuddling was a recurring action between them.
Thomas couldn't help but stare dumbfounded, as Virgil rubbed Patton's back lovingly. He averted his eyes and looked off into the distance, wondering if Logan and Roman would ever take the chance to cuddle each other like the two aspects in front of him.
"We're the only ones who do this Thomas..." Virgil broke the silence, guiding Thomas's gaze back towards their side of the couch.
"What do you mean?"
"Logan and Roman don't understand what it truly means to hold your heart. Patton can do fine by himself sometimes, but other times he needs someone. Sometimes he talks to you, and that helps, but others he...just doesn't do well on his own." Virgil felt Patton shift in his grasp and his tear stained face raised from Virgil's shoulder. The darker aspect, took Patton's chin into one hand and wiped a few tears with his thumb. The exchange was almost too cute for Thomas.
"So...you've taken it upon yourself to hold my heart?" Virgil must have been truly selfless, if he wanted to do this for him and for Patton. Or maybe his love for Patton ran deeper than what he truly thought was possible.
"...yeah..." Virgil looked away in embarrassment. Patton cracked a small smile for the first time that day and pecked Virgil on the cheek, causing his blush to darken.
"Oh that's adorable." A warmth slowly began to spread from within Thomas and he felt equilibrium begin to establish in accordance with his personal feelings. He couldn't stop smiling at the adorable cuddling aspects across from him. "Thank you Virgil. That's really sweet."
"Yeah well...just don't tell anyone. Especially the dark sides..."
"Your secret is safe with me."
"Which is funny, because Thomas is all of us." Patton spoke for the first time, giving a small chuckle. Thomas could tell he wasn't completely 100% yet, but he was getting better.
"Are you ok, Pat?" Virgil looked at Patton with concern and Patton gave the cutest little smile in response.
"I...I'm doing better. Thanks to you." Virgil rolled his eyes.
"I thought we agreed to leave the mushy stuff out of it." There was no malice behind Virgil's voice as he said this, though.
"Awww...but you love it." Patton wiggled into him cutely and Virgil scrunched up his face in order to hide the redness.
Thomas couldn't stop poking fun. He had never seen Virgil like this before. "Holy shmokes he can blush!"
"Stop it Patton! You're ruining my dark aesthetic." Everyone could tell he was trying not to smile.
"Oh, he can do a lot more than blush." Patton winked. "Have you heard him giggle?"
"Alright. You're clearly better. Now get off." Virgil began to push at Patton gently.
"Noooo!!!!" He whined and clung to Virgil, who despite himself was beginning to smile.
Thomas just smiled. "I gotta say, I can't imagine the dark brooding Virgil giggling."
"Its the cutest thing!" Patton suddenly exclaimed. "He's got this little tickle spot-"
"No stop! I have a reputation!" Virgil jumped up from the couch, but he was tackled back down by Patton again.
"-in between his shoulder blades and on his sides!" Patton walked the fingers that were hugging him around his back to just below his neck and began to scratch.
"Mmrphmff!" Virgil muffled his immediate giggles and began to wiggle, not exactly fighting Patton off. Patton gave a smile to Thomas and then dove his other hand hand in to squeeze Virgil's sides. "Aaaack! Nohoho! You traitor!" Virgil grabbed Patton's hands and the two giggling aspects, gently pushed back and forth on each other loosely trying to get out of the other's grasp.
Virgil winked in Thomas's direction and quickly let go of one of Patton's hands unexpectedly to attack his tummy.
"Ooooeeee!!! Wahahha!!! Virgil!!" Virgil knocked the other hand away seeming as Patton was now preoccupied with his own giggles.
"What? Dont act like you didnt start this." Virgil pushed Patton down gently onto the couch and slipped his hands under his shirt. Patton snorted and wiggled and Thomas had to hold his treacherous mouth closed because this was just too precious to process.
"VIHIHIRGIL Nohoho!!" Patton reached back up again with both hands and scittered on Virgil's sides causing him to gently snort and throw his head down, in an attempt to quell his laughter. It didn't take long until Patton had the upper hand again, and had pulled a giggly Virgil down with him, tickling his neck, back, and thumbing his sides in a sporadic motion.
"Thohohohomas hehehehelp!!!" Virgil comically reached out to the human on the other couch. Thomas could only giggle with him.
"Sorry Virgil. I think Patton is the biggest tickle monster here." Patton made a show of burying his nose in Virgil's neck, giving kisses and a bunch of raspberries. A series of higher pitched grunts and squeals escaped Virgil's mouth as he tried half-heartedly to get away. Thomas finally took pity on the purple clad aspect.
"Alright Patton. That's enough. Don't wear poor Virgil out." He reached over and hooked his arms around Patton's middle, pulling him towards Thomas's side of the couch. Virgil scrambled upright and brushed himself off, then rushed right at Patton again.
"Hold him down Thomas!" The human gave a small grin and gently grasped Patton's wrists giving Virgil access to his tummy and sides again. The darker aspect lifted up his shirt and skittered over his bare belly, and Patton began to snort and guffaw with actual laughter, contrasting to how sad the moral aspect was just minutes before.
In a moment of complete surprise to Thomas, Patton, and even Virgil himself, Anxiety took a teasing deep breath and blew a raspberry on Patton's tummy. Patton squealed, and lightly kicked out his legs. Virgil blew another one and made sure to plant a kiss on his belly button next. After an onslaught of kisses and raspberries, Virgil and Thomas let Patton go and the darker aspect scrambled to the other side of the couch. Patton visibly relaxed his body, small giggles still being produced ghostly tickles.
"I had no idea you two could be so cute. And you Virgil! Ive never seen you so soft!" Patton glommed onto Thomas, cuddling into him while Virgil curled up on the opposite side of the couch.
"Yeah well...don't get used to it." Virgil pouted gently, looking at Patton and Thomas with jealousy.
"Eheheheh! You should see him when we are alone. He's so soft he's squishy!"
Virgil lolled his head back. "Patton staaaahhhhp!"
Patton lifted his head and grinned at him. "C'mon Virgil. Come cuddle! You know you want to..." Patton coaxed him and Thomas wrapped his arms around the moral aspect.
Virgil looked away. "I'm fine..."
Thomas held his hand out, reaching out to the purple-clad man on the opposite side of the couch. "Please Virgil? It would mean a lot to both me and Patton." Virgil pursed his lips and reluctantly began scooching over, and rested his head on Thomas's shoulder. Patton gasped in excitement and reached out to Virgil, intertwining their fingers together. Thomas put both of his arms around the parts of himself that encompassed his deepest emotions. It was a soft moment between them. He had never felt this much love for himself that wasn't conceited. And he finally understood what it meant to hold your heart close to the chest.
