You Belong With Me (Prinxiety)

Song above if you want to listen to it
Yes, I'm going to completely ignore the pronouns used in the song because why not?!
WARNING: Mention of cheating, Daniel, crying

You're on the phone with your girlfriend, she's upset
She's going off about something that you said

"No, that's not what I'm saying." Virgil flopped onto his bed, staring up at his ceiling. "Dan, that's not what-" Virgil sighed. "Daniel, sorry. I know you don't like nicknames."

Virgil winced slightly at the stream of anger coming from the other end of the phone.

"Well I can't help it, Daniel. I give everyone I care about nicknames."

"What, like your 'friend' Roman?" Daniel snapped. Virgil closed his eyes.

"Daniel, I've already told you, I don't-"

"Liar."

'Cause she doesn't get your humor like I do

"Daniel, I was just joking around with Roman." Virgil explained for what felt like the 100th time.

"Yeah, sure."

"Look, I'm sorry for what I did. I really am! I didn't think you'd take it as such a big deal."

"Well maybe you should've thought twice." Daniel snapped. Virgil tried not to sigh audibly again.

"Me and Roman have been friends since we were kids. He's just my friend, that's all. I promise."

I'm in my room, it's a typical Tuesday night

Roman scrunched his face up as Virgil threw a piece of paper at him, giggling.

"Ha ha, very funny, Emo Nightmare." Roman said, rolling his eyes. "Now come on, we need to study."

Virgil rolled his eyes. "Studying's boring."

I'm listening to the kind of music she doesn't like

"Sorry you find studying to get a decent job in the future tiring, Hot Topic, but we've got a test on Thursday, remember?"

"It's a French test. Neither of us are going to move to France." Virgil protested.

"Which is why we're listening to Beauty And The Beast." Roman said, leaning over to turn the volume on his record player up.

"I still don't see how this is going to help." Virgil said, giving up on the book he was reading and putting it over his face instead.

"It's to engrain French-ness into our heads."

Virgil let out the little laugh that Roman could never get enough of. "You know, Dan would hate if he knew I was doing this." He muttered.

"Mhm, and which would he hate more?" Roman asked. "The hanging out with me part or the Disney music part?"

"It's a tough call..." Virgil said, trailing off into thought. "But I think he hates Disney more than you, Sir Sing-A-Lot."

"Well, I am very offended by that." Roman said, putting a hand over his heart and laughing a little.

And she'll never know your story like I do

"Hey, remember when we had that teacher in Year 5?" Virgil asked. "What was her name... Mrs Addy?"

"Mrs Adelaide." Roman said, smiling a little.

"Yeah. And you kept making Guys And Dolls references about her and I was just wondering 'what the shit has gotten into my best friend'?" Virgil laughed.

"Mhm. She had to teach us French, remember?" Roman supplied.

"Yeah. And her accent, oh my Lord." Virgil laughed at the memory.

"Oh yeah, Jesus it was bad." Roman snickered along with Virgil.

"I remember I tried telling Daniel that." Virgil's smile faded a bit. "He didn't really get it."

Roman bit the inside of his cheek, wanting to cheer his friend up. "It's one of those 'you had to be there' moments."

But she wears short skirts
I wear T-shirts
She's Cheer Captain, and I'm on the bleachers

"He cancel on you again?" Remus asked, swinging into his and Roman's room.

"Mhm. Daniel has cheer practice and he insisted that Virgil needed to be there."

Remus patted his brother's shoulder. "Ah, the troubles of being in love with a taken man." He said.

"This isn't funny, Re." Roman snapped.

"I never said it was."

Dreaming about the day when you wake up and find
That what you're looking for has been here the whole time

"All I'm saying," Remus said slowly, plopping down on a beanbag, "is that you need to stop holding onto that stupid dream that you have."

"What dream?"

"The one you write about in your diary." Remus said, picking at his nails.

"You've read my diary?!"

"I thought it was one of your shitty romance books at first." Remus protested. "But then I saw Virgil's name. You're a sad person, Ro."

Roman buried his hands in his hair. "Yeah, I know." He mumbled. Remus hesitated before patting his brother on the shoulder again, this time in sympathy.

"You know he's never going to wake up." He said.

"Yeah, I know. He loves Daniel." Roman sighed. "And that's what makes it so Goddamn annoying!"

If you could see that I'm the one
Who understands you

"Hey. Whatcha writing?" Roman asked. Virgil quickly hid his notebook to his chest.

"Uh- nothing." He said quickly. "Nothing of importance, um, you wouldn't get it."

Roman laughed a little. "I've understood you for the past 12 years. I think I can understand when you don't want to show me so I won't press."

A little smile quirked Virgil's lips up slightly. "Thanks."

Been here all along
So, why can't you see?
You belong with me
You belong with me

"Mkay, bye Daniel." Virgil said, smiling a little even though Daniel wasn't there to see it. "I-" His smile faded slightly as Daniel hung up on him. He slipped his phone into his pocket and looked down.

"You okay?"

"Yeah, I'm fine." Virgil said. "Daniel just hung up little too quickly, that's all. Just wanted to say something."

Roman elbowed him in an attempt to cheer him. "Hey, you'll be able to say it next time, right?"

Virgil nodded. "Yeah. Yeah, next time."

Walk in the streets with you in your worn-out jeans

Virgil tapped a little tune on his headphones as he and Roman walked through the park.

"You can put your headphones on if you want to." Roman said. "I won't mind."

"Nah, it's fine." Virgil shook his fringe out of his eyes. "Daniel said I needed to be less anti-social anyway."

Roman shrugged and shoved his hands in his pockets. "Okay. But just remember that I don't mind."

I can't help thinking this is how it ought to be
Laughing on a park bench thinking to myself
Hey, isn't this easy?

Virgil laughed at the ridiculous joke Roman had made, sweeping his fringe out of his eyes.

"I'm not joking, they actually said that!" Roman said, barely keeping a straight face.

"Yeah, sure." Virgil said in between giggles.

Roman grinned. He was glad that he could make Virgil happy.

"Hey, isn't this easy?" He thought.

And you've got a smile
That can light up this whole town

Virgil looked up as rain began to patter the ground.

"Oh shit, my headphones'll get wet!"

Roman looked around the park before grabbing Virgil's hand and pulling him over to the band stand which shielded them both from the rain.

"We and your headphones are safe!" Roman declared, letting go of Virgil's hand. Virgil laughed, grinning.

"Thanks Princey."

Somehow, Virgil's smile made the rain seem less dark than before.

I haven't seen it in a while
Since she brought you down
You say you're fine, I know you better than that
Hey, what you doing with a girl like that?

Virgil checked his phone as it buzzed, signalling he'd got a new message. His smile faded a little.

"You good Emo?" Virgil looked up at Roman and forced the small smile back onto his face.

"Yeah, yeah. I'm fine. Just, um, sorry but I need to go."

Roman looked at the rain, which had started to come down in buckets. "In this weather?"

"Yeah, sorry. Um, Daniel needs me for something, uh, yeah. Look, I'm sorry Princey but I gotta go."

"Hey, it's fine." Roman reassured. "Your partner's more important than I am. I'll see you soon, mkay?"

"Yeah, yeah. Sorry." Virgil said again before pulling his hood up over his head and running out into the rain.

She wears high heels
I wear sneakers
She's Cheer Captain, and I'm on the bleachers

"Roman, hey! Hey!" Virgil yelled, running up to his friend. "Sorry I'm late."

"Pretty late." Roman reiterated. "What happened?"

"Daniel had a thing. Short notice. Needed to support. Sorry, again." Virgil gasped out in between breaths.

Dreaming about the day when you wake up and find
That what you're looking for has been here the whole time

"It's fine." Roman said, forcing down any ill feelings towards Daniel. "Like I said, partner's are more important than me. Anyway, um, we kinda completely missed the film so what d'you wanna do?"

"Um..." Virgil ran a hand through his hair, trying to think. "I'm blank, sorry. Up to you, I guess."

Roman shrugged. "We could just go to the park again."

Virgil nodded in agreement. "Park it is. Again, I'm really sorry."

"It's fine, Emo Nightmare. I get it."

If you could see that I'm the one
Who understands you

Virgil tapped on his headphones again as they walked.

"I really am sorry." He mumbled.

"Virgil, I've said it's fine. I understand, Daniel's your boyfriend," those words caused Roman more pain than they should, "and I'm just your friend." Nevermind, those words caused Roman more pain than they should. "You needed to support him, it's fine."

"Yeah, right." Virgil shook his head to get rid of any unwanted thoughts and sighed. "Sorry."

"You have sorry-itis, my friend." Roman diagnosed, making Virgil snicker.

Been here all along
So, why can't you see?
You belong with me

"Listening to anything new?" Roman asked after a while of just sitting next to Virgil in silence, for him anyway.

"Found a new band." Virgil said, pausing his music and pulling his headphones down around his neck. "Sarah And The Safe Words. You'd like 'em."

"Can I have a listen?"

"Sure." Virgil plonked his headphones down on Roman's head pretty hard.

"Ow. I didn't realise we were nine-year-olds again, Virge." Roman said, rubbing his head a little. Virgil giggled.

"Sorry. Force of habit."

"Mhm."

Standing by and waiting at your backdoor
All this time how could you not know, baby?
You belong with me
You belong with me

Roman rocked back and forth on the balls of his feet, waiting for Virgil. His ringtone started blaring loudly and he quickly checked his phone to shut it up. In hind-sight, Part Of Your World wasn't the best idea for a ringtone.

'hey, can we cancel?' It was a text from Virgil.

'Sure. Why?'

There was a pause as Virgil typed his answer.

'Just not feeling up to it right now'

Oh, I remember you driving to my house
In the middle of the night

Roman's ringtone nearly made Remus fall out of the top bunk in surprise.

"Ro, it's fucking midnight!" He groaned, shoving his head into his pillow. "Shut your Goddamn phone off."

"I thought I had!" Roman protested, scrambling out of bed to turn his phone off before it woke up his parents.

"What is it anyway?"

'hey, can we talk? i know it's late but i just need someone to talk to' It was Virgil.

"Nothing important." Roman said quickly.

'Sure. Where are you?'

'end of the road'

Roman grabbed a jumper from off the floor.

"Where are you going?" Remus asked, already half asleep again.

'Come up to my house. I'll be out in a sec'

"Just out to the garden."

I'm the one who makes you laugh
When you know you're 'bout to cry

"Hey, what's wrong?" Roman asked, his breath fogging in front of him in the night air. The street lamps were behind Virgil so Roman couldn't see his face but he knew Virgil well enough to know something was wrong.

Virgil fumbled with his phone, the screen lighting up tear tracks in his face. Without saying a word, he handed it to Roman.

Daniel was cheating on Virgil.

"Oh my God." Roman whispered. "Virgil, I'm so sorry."

Virgil didn't say anything. He just sat down on the grass and put his head on his knees.

"Are you okay with me touching you?" Roman asked. Virgil nodded slightly and Roman sat down next to Virgil, putting an arm around him.

"I'm so, so sorry." He whispered.

"Sorry won't do anything about him." Virgil mumbled.

"Remember... remember what Mr Green said?" Roman asked, racking his brains for any anecdote that might cheer Virgil up even slightly. " 'Sorry is the answer to every problem' or something like that?"

"Sorry isn't the reason but it's the answer." Virgil mumbled, looking up at the stars. He let out a weak, broken laugh. "It was a silly saying."

"Mr Green was a silly man."

Virgil let out the same weak, broken laugh.

"Yeah."

And I know your favorite songs

"You're gonna start hearing music soon, according to MCR." Roman muttered. Virgil laughed his weak, broken laugh again.

"And you only hear the music when your heart begins to break." He sang quietly.

"Now we are the kids from yesterday." Roman sang with him. Virgil leaned his head on Roman's shoulder.

"Thanks Princey."

And you tell me 'bout your dreams
Think I know where you belong
Think I know it's with me

"You know, I've always wondered how long it would take." Virgil whispered.

"How long what would take?"

"How long it would take for Daniel to do something relationship-ending." Virgil said. "Cause he's been giving off signs for ages. I just never thought it'd be in this way."

Roman wrapped his arm around Virgil's shoulders

"It'll be alright." He muttered. Virgil nodded slightly.

"I know."

Can't you see that I'm the one
Who understands you?

"I know you're right, Roman." Virgil continued. "Cause you're always right."

Roman shook his head. "No. No I'm not."

Been here all along
So, why can't you see?

"Yeah you are." Virgil protested. "Well, most of the time. And that's what I love so much about you."

All the air in Roman's chest seemed to disappear.

You belong with me

"What?" He whispered.

"It's what I love so much about-" Virgil's sentence stopped short when he realised what he'd said. "I, uh, I didn't mean-" Virgil lifted his head off Roman's shoulder at looked up at Roman. "Shit, you heard what I said."

"You mean that?" Roman asked. Virgil looked down at his hands and nodded slightly. Barely enough for it to be called a nod.

Standing by and waiting at your backdoor
All this time how could you not know, baby?

"I know it's a weird time to bring it up." Virgil said. "It's a completely stupid time to bring it up. But I do. I do care about you a lot, Roman."

"I- me too. About you." Roman said quickly. "I care a lot about you."

You belong with me
You belong with me

Virgil smiled shyly and leaned his head back on Roman's shoulder. This all felt like one crazy dream.

Roman pinched himself to make sure it wasn't just that, a crazy dream. It wasn't. This was actually happening.

"You belong with me." He thought, hugging Virgil tightly. "And I belong with you, Virge."

Do I know what this was? Fucking long!
And I kinda hate it. But not a lot. It just didn't turn out the way I thought it would.
Bye,
Blaize
