"Look! Is this the not poisonous kind?" Patton asked, crouching on the moss covered ground by a bunch of brown mushrooms and Logan joined him, flipping through pages in his mushroom guide book. Virgil looked around, trying to see where his third husband had gone, spotting him soon by a lone maple tree, picking up fallen red and yellow and green leaves and putting them in the mushroom basket.
"These are edible, yes." Logan said and Patton began picking the mushrooms, holding his sweater up as a small bag for them.
"Ro, get over here." Virgil called, interrupting his leaf inspection and soon Roman was by their side, helping Patton pick all the mushrooms.
Virgil reached a hand out for Logan, helping him up from the ground and then leading him with him as they continued on, looking for more mushrooms, Logan stopping every few meters to find a mushroom in his book, more often than not just to find out what mushroom it was rather than because he thought it wasn't poisonous.
It didn't take long for Patton and Roman to catch up, picking up all the non-poisonous mushrooms that Logan and Virgil found, plus pretty leaves and big pinecones and twigs they found. Those would surely look nice on the shelves by the windows with all the pretty rocks they had found on their other walks.
It was how they decorated their vacation house, more often than not. Virgil would admit that at least glittering rocks were irresistible. How was he supposed to just throw those away? No, they always kept stuff they found and then left them lying around, even if they tried not to.
At this point they had just given up, all the shelves in their cabin might as well be full of clutter. It just made it feel home-y anyway.
They kept picking mushrooms, Roman and Patton being continuously distracted by pretty things they found and already pointing out small fir trees that were potential Christmas trees despite the fact that they would be too lazy to walk this far through the snow in December once it became relevant.
Their conversation made Virgil smile anyway, feeling so content and fortunate to be married to these three men, thinking back to all their previous years of celebrating Christmases and birthdays together, and all their walks in the forest by their vacation house and all their swims in the lake nearby and... he was just so happy that he was spending his life with them.
Best decision he had ever made, to say yes when Patton had proposed to them five years ago.
He was pulled from his thoughts from Patton's shriek and laughter and he saw him and Roman engaged in a leaf fight under a tree that had dropped almost all its leaves, covering the ground beneath it in yellow.
The mushroom basked was standing a bit away out of harm's way as Patton threw an armful of leaves above their heads that slowly rained down around the two of them. Virgil glanced to the side to see Logan sneakily taking pictures with his phone. When realizing he was caught he just shrugged slightly, smiling.
"I'm making a scrapbook of our married life together." Logan explained and Virgil felt an almost aching fondness in his chest at his husband's words. "You know, as Patton made one for our five years as boyfriends."
"I'll bet you three jars of crofters that Patton and Roman will both cry when they look through it." Virgil said.
"Make it five if you cry too and you've got a deal." Logan said, squeezing his hand gently.
"Deal." Virgil said, knowing very well that all four of them were probably going to be sniffling once Logan gifted them the scrapbook towards the end of the year and they sat together and reminisced while looking through it.
Virgil watched Patton jump onto Roman's back, whisper something in his ear that made Roman grin. Then he gathered up a bunch of leaves in his hand and walked up to Logan and Virgil, still with Patton on his back.
"Hi." He said innocently before reaching out for Logan and shoving his handful of leaves down his shirt and the both of them laughed loudly as Roman quickly ran ahead with Patton holding onto him tightly. Logan pouted as he shook the leaves out of his shirt.
"Children. I'm married to two adult children." Logan huffed, shaking his head and trying hard not to smile, following Virgil as he walked over to the forgotten mushroom basket before following Roman and Patton who had continued through the forest in the direction of their cabin.
It didn't take them long to catch up with them though, finding them sitting together by a small stream of crystal clear water. If they followed it they would reach the lake, but although the lake was probably very pretty this time of the year Virgil didn't think they had the energy to go there too.
No, they were going to get back to their cabin and remove the dirt from the mushrooms and make hot chocolate and light a fire in the fireplace, and Patton was surely going to make an autumn-y wreath with twigs and pinecones and the colorful leaves.
"Hi, sorry Lo. You should have seen your face though." Patton said, getting up from the ground and giving Logan a gentle kiss to spur on the forgiveness.
Patton leaned in and kissed Virgil too, chaste but soft, before taking Logan's book and putting it in the mushroom basket so he could hold his hand.
"Mhm, sorry. It was Patton's idea." Roman said, also getting up and kissing them both before taking the mushroom basket from VIrgil and then taking his hand.
"Aw, snitch." Patton complained, pulling them along to the path that went from the lake to their cabin, effectively showing them the quickest way back.
"Oh, apples! We can make apple pie." Patton said a moment later, forgetting all about the snitching as the apple tree near their vacation house came into view. While apple pie sounded wonderful Virgil didn't want to have to worry about any of his husbands falling out of any trees today.
"Maybe tomorrow, I don't want to have to find the ladder today, I just wanna get back inside and warm myself by the fireplace." Virgil said, effectively convincing them all that the apple picking could wait until another day.
They all had a whole week left off work, they had lots of time to do everything they planned to and really enjoy the sunny autumn weather together before it turned dark and rainy until winter came.
"Lovely idea, my love, the apples can wait." Roman said, Patton agreeing and already discussing what they could make for dinner after they had warmed themselves up and put away all their stuff.
Virgil really couldn't wait to spend the rest of his life with these three.
