The sound of his son's voice was definitely more effective than any alarm clock Virgil had ever owned. It was as if the sound just made every internal overprotective you-are-needed alarm clock ring despite how deeply asleep he might have been.
So, his son quietly calling for him? He woke up immediately, blinking to see in the dark, almost flinching at the realization that someone, his son of course, was standing right next to where he was sleeping, almost right in front of his face.
"Stardust, what's wrong?" He wondered and turned his nightlight on, immediately noting that the five year old's cheeks were wet with tears. He sat up, reaching for Logan and lifting him up into his lap with barely any effort. He wrapped his arms around him, kissing the top of his head and trying not to worry too much that Logan had managed to hurt himself or was sick or-
"Promise you will not be mad?" Logan wondered, which wasn't what Virgil had thought he would hear since generally Logan never did anything worthy of making them angry.
They were actually very careful not to show anger towards Logan, both Virgil and Roman having experienced unnecessarily angry parents and knowing that it was the least productive way to raise a child that they wanted to trust them and always feel safe and listened to.
"I won't get angry, I promise." He said, offering Logan his pinkie finger as his son has recently learnt about pinky promises from a friend at daycare. Logan linked his little pinky finger with Virgil, who tried not to get choked up at how adorable Logan was sometimes.
"Um, yesterday when you and dad were outside in the garden I found the movie you were watching before and it was really scary and I had a bad dream." Logan confessed, not looking at him and holding onto Virgil's hand.
"Oh." Virgil said, understanding why Logan was a little worried. Logan had been curious about the dvd case for a horror movie Virgil had been watching the day before, but when Roman got home with Logan from the daycare Virgil had paused the movie and told him that it wasn't something a five year old should watch.
In hindsight maybe he should have given Logan more of an explanation than that, especially as he knew how insanely curious the kid was. Maybe he could have at least put the movie away since he knew Logan had learnt how to use the dvd player ages ago. At least Logan couldn't have seen much of the movie, they hadn't left Logan inside alone for more than ten minutes.
"Well, I'm not mad, and I'm sorry you had a nightmare, they really suck and they're really scary even if they aren't real or make sense." Virgil said, rubbing Logan's back and carefully wiping Logan's face with the bottom of his purple sleep t-shirt.
"However, next time you want to find something out, instead of doing something we have told you not to, you can just ask one of us to explain why. And if you think we are wrong we will hear you out and if you make a good argument we will change our minds." Virgil said.
"Okay. I don't think I want to watch any of your or dads movies again, though. Only the Disney ones." Logan said, wiping his eyes, his glasses almost falling off. Virgil carefully plucked the small glasses from Logan's face, setting them aside on the nightstand.
"That's alright, you don't have to do anything you don't want to." He planted another kiss to the top of Logan's head, his son sighing and leaning against Virgil's chest.
"You wanna try to get some more sleep? You can stay here with me and dad, if you want to." Virgil said, remembering back when he had been little enough to wake his parents up when he had had a nightmare. He wondered when he had grown out of that, hoping that Logan never would feel that he was too old to come to him or Roman for comfort.
"Um, I'd like to stay." Logan decided, yawning, not making any effort to move away from his spot on Virgil's lap. Not that there was much space for him with how Roman was sprawled over more than half the bed.
"Move over, Ro." Virgil said and repeatedly nudged his husband until he seemed to wake up, grumbling something that was impossible to make out, swatting slightly at Virgil, ending up patting at Logan instead.
"C'mon gorgeous, move over a bit." Virgil tried again, this time attracting Roman's attention, and he squinted up at them, groaning slightly.
"What time is it?" He wondered, blinking several times before seeming to really realize Logan was there. Logan twisted in Virgil's lap, turning towards Roman and reaching for him.
"Dunno, night time. Logan had a nightmare though, so he's staying here." Virgil said, words that made Roman immediately wake up more properly and pull Logan into a hug.
"Oh, do not worry, my little prince, I'll protect you from any monster or foe that frightens you!" Roman promised, pressing kisses to Logan's cheeks until it made him giggle and try to squirm away. One day Virgil might just drop dead from seeing how cute his little family was because how was he supposed to survive under these conditions?
Roman brushed Logan's hair away from his face and Logan yawned, cuddling closer to Roman who pulled his covers up to cover them both, looking at their son in the absolutely softest way possible and Virgil was sure that they were both feeling equally fortunate to be where they were at that precise moment.
"Sleep well." Roman said and kissed Logan's forehead, receiving a very sleepy and mumble-y response. Virgil laid back down, reaching to turn the nightlight off before scooting closer to his husband and his son, throwing his arm around them both.
It didn't take long before the three of them were asleep.
