[3] - Moxiety - Kiss

Prompt 6: Gift

Human au, high school au

--

"Vergy, wait!" A voice yelled just as Virgil was about to head towards the exit of the school, ready to get the hell out of the hell hole he had spent his day in and enjoy the Christmas break that had began as soon as their teacher had told them class was over.

He turned around, spotting his best friend running towards him from a bench a bit down the hall, smiling widely and making Virgil's stomach whirl with butterflies.

"Hey, Pat. Didn't your last class end an hour ago?" Virgil said, wondering what he was still doing at school and why he hadn't already ran home to celebrate with his dog that they had a break from school.

Patton pulled him to the side of the corridor, away from the steady stream of tired high schoolers on their way home to play video games until they forgot the horrors of the school year.

"I got you a Christmas present, and I wanted to give it to you before you leave." Patton said, beaming as he held his hand out at Virgil, holding a small present wrapped in shiny purple paper, a glittery and brightly blue bow on top of it.

Virgil blinked, hesitantly reaching out to take the small gift, looking up at Patton to make sure that he had not somehow misunderstood and that it was actually for him. (Which he knew exactly how stupid it was, but having anxiety was just like that.)

"I- I didn't know you were getting me something, I don't have anything for you yet." Virgil said, feeling that it wasn't quite fair that Patton got him something when he hadn't.

"I know that, I didn't expect you to since we haven't talked about getting each other gifts but... I saw it and I thought you'd like it and I wanted to give it to you. Kind of as a thank you for being such a great friend! I know we've only known each other a few months but I really didn't think I would get any friends when I moved here, and I'm just really happy you're in my life." Patton rambled, shuffling his feet slightly.

"No opening it before Christmas, though." He added with a small laugh and Virgil could feel himself practically melt at how cute Patton was.

"Thank you, Pat. Really wish I'd gotten you something though." Virgil said, feeling too guilty about not thinking to get his best friend a gift to really appreciate that his friend had gotten him something. He felt like a bad friend, even if he knew Patton would have none of that.

"Oh, I really don't need anything, or I would have asked for something. And if you really want to get me something you can always do it once I get back home from celebrating Christmas with my relatives, but you really, really don't. I'm happy just having you in my life." Patton reassured and Virgil smiled, pocketing the little gift.

What he had ever done to deserve someone as sweet as Patton in his life he didn't know.

"Yeah, it's too bad you're going away for all of Christmas break." Virgil said, trying to not show how disappointed he actually was. He'd been hoping he could spend more time with him after school ever since a few weeks ago when they had had a sleepover and practically spent all of it cuddling.

"Mhm, but when I get back there's still gonna be a few days of break left, so you can come over to my place again!" Patton suggested, as if he could tell what Virgil was thinking about.

"I'd like that." Virgil said, giving his friend a little smile.

"Me too. I gotta run now, though, my dad's waiting for me by the parking lot." Patton said, opening his arms and pulling Virgil into a wonderfully warm and tight hug. He didn't want to get go, but he knew he had to since he didn't want to get Patton in trouble with his dads for being late.

He wanted to thank Patton for the gift, though, and he didn't really know how. So he made a quick decision and, right before letting go of him he kissed Patton's cheek. Then he hastily stepped back.

Patton blinked, face flushing brightly and Virgil worried for a mere moment that he had fucked things up and that Patton would think that was gross of him to do, but then Patton smiled and it was really impossible to be nervous when Patton smiled like that.

"That's probably better than any gift you could get me." He said, looking just a little bit starstruck.

"Really, you can't think of anything better than that?" Virgil wondered with a chuckle, avoiding mentioning how a kiss on the cheek from him could hardly have any value in fear of making Patton have to threaten to physically fight him again.

"Well... maybe a kiss on the lips?" He said, and Virgil might have stared at him for a little too long but, really, how else was he supposed to react when his best friend had just asked him for a kiss? If that was some kind of joke then Virgil wasn't sure how he would be able to hide his disappointment.

"Um, you don't have to, of course," Patton said, sounding far more nervous than Virgil wanted to be the reason for, "didn't wanna make things weird, sorry."

Virgil grabbed Patton's arm despite the fact that he hadn't made any attempt to run away before Virgil found his voice again.

"You didn't make anything weird." He said, and then leaned in and pressed their mouths together in a somewhat awkward but very gentle first kiss that he was pretty sure he was never going to forget.

Then they parted and Virgil was pretty sure he was blushing worse than Patton was. Before either of them had the time to decide what to do next (say something? Kiss more?) Patton's phone rang, making him startle and quickly dig through his pockets.

Virgil didn't really concentrate on the phone call, too distracted by the fact that he and Patton had just kissed to focus on hearing whatever the other person said, but he was pretty sure it was Patton's dad.

"Yeah. Mhm. In a minute. Yeah. Okay, bye." Patton said then hanging up the call.

"Okay, sorry, I really have to go, but I will text you as soon as I can." Patton said, hugging him again and smiling widely before hurrying towards the exit.

Virgil stared after him, then shaking his head a little to bring himself back to reality, remembering that he had been on his way home to enjoy Christmas break.

He continued out of the school building, towards the bus stop. He might have found himself worrying about the text conversation that would apparently take place as soon as Patton was able to, but he was far too busy thinking about how soft Patton's lips were.
