Roman was a romantic, that had always been clear for everyone to see, he enjoyed showering his partner with love and affection, using pet names, kissing, hugging, everything to show his boyfriend he loved him, and he'd never cared if he was being affectionate in public where people could see. He loved cheesy romantic movies full with grand gestures and cliches, and he adored the ideas of dates that was probably a little bit too extra.
Roman's vision of proposing had always been grand, him of course having bought an expensive and gorgeous ring, fancy dinner, moonlit walk outside, long speech about everything he adored about his partner, dropping on one knee to ask the question somewhere surrounded with flowers and lit candles.
Those had been some of his ideas and if he'd been asked a few years ago how he was going to propose his answer would have been something along those lines.
But as it turned out, that was not at all how him proposing was going to happen. Okay, nothing could keep him from giving a sappy and romantic speech, but he'd deduced that his proposal would have to be a lot more subdued than what he had always envisioned.
After all, a proposal wasn't all about him living out some romantic fantasy he'd had in mind since he was a teen, it was about asking his boyfriend of four years to spend the rest of his life with him, and therefore it was crucial to make it the proposal his boyfriend would be the most happy with.
Some might find it strange, but Roman had realized he actually didn't care at all that he was missing out on making the proposal extra and grand, because all he wanted was his partner, the love of his life, or otherwise known as Virgil Storm. No incredible proposal excited him as much as the thought of marrying Virgil, and his boyfriend was pretty different from Roman and he had definitely had to take that into account while planning the perfect proposal.
(It had taken a while of dating Virgil before Roman realized that perfect didn't have to mean grand gestures and public displays of love, which were both things that made Virgil the most uncomfortable.)
A public proposal, such as in a restaurant or any other crowded area, was a big no, it'd make Virgil feel anxious and slightly scared for their safety in case any homophobes were looking, and possibly like he was forced to say yes to not make an awkward scene in front of other people.
Roman really didn't want any of that.
A grand gesture was still possible, he could cover their shared apartment in lit candles like in Friends when Monica and Chandler got engaged (although, something told him Virgil would be nervous about the fire hazard, and when would he have the time to do all that when Virgil worked from home), he could stick small glow-in-the-dark stars all over the walls or cover the room with Virgil's favorite flower (purple Gerbera), cook or order a fancy meal that he knew Virgil loved and bake his favorite cookies (or, probably, ask their friend Patton to bake them, Roman was a disaster when it came to baking).
But he ended up not doing something like that either (although he did get a bouquet of purple Gerbera for Virgil, having sprinkled some silvery glitter on them too, because he simply had to).
Today was the day, he'd decided. He'd been planning it for a really long time even if the plan was really simple.
It was Saturday and they'd slept in late, taking a long while to sleepily cuddle and watch youtube in bed before getting up and making waffles for breakfast at twelve.
The flowers had been waiting in a vase on their living room table, Roman had gotten off work late last night and Virgil had already been in bed, which was lucky since it made the flowers a surprise. If Roman was lucky he would get to spend the rest of his life making Virgil smile as softly as he had at the sight of the flowers.
Roman had managed to coax Virgil into dancing along to their favorite music in the living room, which involved a whole lot of laughing and teasing the other as neither of them knew how to dance at all. Actually, there was more stumbling than actual dancing, Roman would say.
They'd made tea and watched a movie, and he had let Virgil choose the movie despite the fact that it was actually his turn. Roman did really hope that he wasn't being too obvious about today being special, but he couldn't help feeling like he should take every possible chance to spoil Virgil, make today as special as he could without it making Virgil uncomfortable.
Then they'd gone out to Virgil's favourite fast food place for dinner, got home and ate some ice cream while watching a show they were halfway through. It hadn't exactly been an extraordinary day, but it'd been lovely and Virgil had been smiling a lot and been more energetic than usual which meant that he was having a great day and that had been the whole point.
Virgil was singing along to a song playing in the show. Virgil loved telling him Roman's voice was lovely, but Roman strongly believed that there was nothing lovelier than hearing Virgil sing. He wished Virgil would sing more often.
Virgil glanced at Roman, quieting when seeing that he was being watched, a pretty blush making his cheeks pink. "What?"
"You know how much I love you, right?" Roman said and Virgil smiled in that way that seemed to be only for Roman. He leaned in and pressed a gentle and lingering kiss to Roman's lips.
"Yeah. Love you too, Ro." He said and in this moment Roman was sure that it couldn't be true that Virgil really fathomed his love for him, because Roman barely understood himself how he could love someone as much as he loved Virgil. It was overwhelming in all possible ways and he'd never been more sure that proposing was the absolute right thing to do. And right now was as perfect as any other moment, right?
He pulled Virgil in for another kiss, trying to somehow convey all he was feeling in it, and maybe he succeeded somewhat.
"What is making you so sappy today?" Virgil asked once they parted again, his face and tip of his ears slightly pink. It was adorable how he still became flustered sometimes despite them having been boyfriends for three entire years. Roman shrugged and smiled as an answer to Virgil's question, because saying that it was nothing would be a lie and any other response would require an explanation and Roman couldn't very well just say that it was because of how he would be proposing as soon as he gathered the courage.
"I'm getting something to drink, you want a glass too?" Roman asked and Virgil nodded, pausing the episode playing before letting go of Roman's hand and burrowing himself into the pillows on their couch.
Roman went into the kitchen, looking through a cabinet for the two best wine glasses they had (which didn't take long, they didn't have many) and then poured Virgil's favorite soda in them since neither he nor Virgil was a fan of alcoholic drinks. He lingered in the kitchen for as long as possible without being suspicious, trying to gather up his courage to actually get to the proposal.
He wanted nothing more than to ask Virgil to marry him and he didn't particularly think Virgil would say no, but he still found himself nervous. Of course he did. This was the next big step in their relationship.
He couldn't even count the times he had imagined this. Ever since they just began dating Roman had been daydreaming what it would be like to share his entire life with this man, what proposing would be like, what getting married would be like.
Just the thought of his and Virgil's wedding and to be able to call Virgil his husband, it made him smile brightly to himself and he went back to the living room, setting his glass down on the coffee table and handing the other to Virgil.
"Here's your drink, my love." He said, and Virgil took a small sip as Roman sat down next to him again.
He remembered how thrilling it had been when he had finally been able to call Virgil his boyfriend, he already knew he'd feel the same way about referring to Virgil as his fiance and later his husband, just the thought made him feel all giddy and far too happy.
"Should I start the episode again?" Virgil asked but Roman was quick to shake his head. He should really get going with the whole proposal, he was too nervous to really focus on what was happening on the tv anyway, too busy playing it out in his head.
"I just want to say some things first." He said, his heart beating about twice as fast already even before starting. He had no pre-prepared speech, he hadn't rehearsed what to say, although he'd been imagining what to say many, many times so he somewhat knew what he wanted to have said.
"First of all, you're gorgeous and pretty and always so handsome, it puts all other men to shame," Roman started and Virgil scoffed loudly at him, "no, shush, it's illegal for you to disagree right now. You're incredible and I want you to know that meeting you was one of the best things to happen to me because you make my life so much more interesting and fun."
Virgil was smiling softly, clearly trying not to and Roman always loved it when Virgil just couldn't help smiling, loved that he was the reason why.
"You're such a sap, Roman." Virgil said, swatting at Roman's chest. He caught Virgil's hand, entwining their fingers. He leaned in and gave Virgil a small kiss.
"Don't interrupt me, I'm not done. I haven't had a chance to tell you how you light up my life with your very presence no matter what kind of day either of us is having, how your smile is the most beautiful thing and that I adore that one smile that always seems to be reserved just for me when I make you smile on a bad day, and how I love how grumpy and cute you are in the mornings before coffee and a shower, and I want to wake up next to you and your sleepy pout every day for forever."
He pressed another kiss to Virgil's lips before he had the time to disagree and scoff but Virgil did roll his eyes rather fondly.
"What's the point of all this?" He said, swatting at Roman again, all flustered and cute, kind of looking like he wanted to pull his hood down over his face and hide. Roman knew Virgil wasn't the best at handling compliments, but asking him not to be sappy while proposing was more than Roman could promise. Grand he could live without, but a sappy speech Virgil could not escape.
"There's no point, or, well, maybe, yeah there's a point, but I'll get to that eventually if you just let me tell you how much I adore you and everything about you. This is important, you need to know." He said.
"Roman, you're going to kill me." Virgil whined, Roman ignoring him and continuing.
"I know sappy things aren't really your thing, but, really, this is important. I need you to know, to really know, that when I tell you I love you I mean it. You will probably never understand how much I really love you, but I will be spending the rest of my life trying to show you, if you would let me."
"Virgil, will you marry me?" He said, voice maybe not entirely as steady as he'd liked and Virgil gaped slightly at him with a priceless expression, looking incredibly cute, and before he had the time to respond Roman spoke again.
"I'm sorry for interrupting at a time like this but before you answer I just want to make sure that you're aware that if this is too soon or marriage isn't something you're all that excited about, a no won't change our relationship in any way, we'll just keep being boyfriends, which I won't mind in the least because all I want is you and it doesn't matter if we're married or not. And I also want to say that if you need time to think that's fine too, I really don't want to pressure you into making a decision if you're not ready to." He said, speaking quickly to get all that out because Virgil being comfortable was his number one priority.
"You're perfect." Virgil said quietly, eyes a bit watery, and Roman almost laughed a little because he definitely was not but he did try his best to be no less than what Virgil deserved.
"And yes, Roman, yes." He said and it took Roman's brain a second or two to realize what he was saying yes to.
"Wait, really? You're sure?" He said, maybe sounding more surprised and amazed than he should, and Virgil nodded, a small laugh escaping him.
"Of course I am, who could say no to marrying you?" He said and at that moment Roman felt so happy and excited that he really didn't know what to do with himself and he leant in and kissed Virgil in an attempt to show his awe, kissing him again and again, Virgil's arms tightly around him as neither of them wanted to let go of the other.
"Oh, wait, I have a ring too, do you want to see?" Roman said after a while, wiping his eyes on Virgil's hoodie, pulling the ring box out of one of his pockets as Virgil nodded.
"At first I'd decided we'd go together and you could choose a ring you wanted the most but then I went into a shop that had engagement rings because I just couldn't help it and this one just felt like it was perfect." He handed it to Virgil who opened it and carefully picked the ring up, placing it in his hand to look closer at it.
"It can of course be changed though." He added and Virgil looked up at him.
"You're stupid, I love it, I love you." He said and wiped his eyes with the sleeve of his hoodie. Virgil held his left hand out at him and Roman took his hand, then the ring and carefully slid the ring on his ring finger and they looked up at each other with wide smiles. Roman pulled Virgil into a long, tight hug.
There were no words to describe how he was feeling, it just wasn't possible, wasn't enough, Roman held Virgil close for many minutes, blinking away a few tears during that time. Then they carefully untangled themselves, Roman taking Virgil's left hand in his hands, them both looking down at the ring which fit perfectly on Virgil's finger. He kissed the back of Virgil's hand.
"Hello, fiance." He said, still smiling stupidly much at the thought of what the future held for them.
