Math (P Moxiety)

This is a oneshot written not by me, but my wonderful, amazing, beautiful girlfriend Sammi Winchester_At_Heart She doesn't typically write SS but if you like her writing here you should take a look at her page for original works and Supernatural stuff! She's fantastic, I love her, and I'm sure you'll love seeing her writing here.

If someone could explain to Virgil why exactly he needed to know how to find the circumference of a circle, he'd appreciate it. Because here he sat trying to make up a month's worth of homework for four different classes in one week. The wonders of missing school.

He'd flown through the English and biology work in just a few hours on Monday and his egg for home economics was safely in the fridge, but suddenly, Thursday was there and he was lost.

He laid his head down in his arms on the dining room table and sighed, none of his work made sense. Virgil had been saying since grade school that letters do not belong in math and especially the ones that floated around on the paper when he looked too hard. As the minutes slowly ticked away, his dad, Patton, came home from work carrying a bag of take away.

"Virge? Where are you? I brought dinner. "

Virgil lifted his head off the table and reached for the bag, his movements mimicking a toddler who wanted to be picked up.

" Kiddo, what's wrong?"

" Just don't get it. None of this makes sense. "

" What is it? "

" Math. Makeup work from being out so long. Remind me why we had to let Roman stay here?"

" Because my sister is pregnant and if she got sick, the baby could get hurt. "

" But giving me Mono was okay?"

" Virgil, we didn't know he was that sick. I wouldn't have let you share a room if I'd known. "

" Whatever. Do you get any of this? "

" Nope. Let's be lost together. "

Soon enough the droning of Sal from Khan Academy was the loudest thing in the room.

A few more minutes passed and then-
" Dad? Didn't you say there was food?"

Patton laughed. " Yeah. Sesame chicken for you and coconut shrimp for me. I have an idea. How about for every question you get right you get a piece of chicken."

Virgil shook his head. " It'll get cold. Something else? "

Patton nodded. " Fair point, kiddo. Yeah, okay. You want to go out for lunch on Saturday? We have had father son bonding time in quite a while. How about if we can get all this done, and you understand it, you can pick the restaurant. "

"Okay. But first chicken. "

An hour or so, and a lot of take away, later,  the two had finished a good few worksheets.  Virgil understood none of what he's just learned, but it was done.

"Okay, Virgil, let's try number five. Find h of a if h of x equals three x to the seventh minus ten x to the fourth plus three x minus eleven."

Virgil took a few minutes but ended up coming up with the answer. He didn't know why it was what it was but he knew it would make Patton happy to see that Virgil was learning something, so he faked understanding. He faked the numbers staying put on the page and he ignored the headache he was slowly getting. His eyes hurt and he once again questioned if he needed glasses like his dad. His dad would be so proud of him if he just got to the end of this worksheet and got it right. If he stopped being a failure.

Plus, Virgil knew how excited Patton was about the father son time they would have and he would mess all of that up if he couldn't just get this done.

Patton set him on his own as he ran into the kitchen to finally unload. He'd immediately sat down with Virgil after getting home and hadn't had a chance to do anything for himself. He loved Virgil, yes, but sometimes just wished he could get a few minutes to himself. His job was stressful, he was a single dad, and on top of that, a failure. He knew Virgil was completely lost and probably wasn't learning a thing from Patton, but he couldn't help it. When Patton was in school, this wasn't taught in the basic classes.  And Patton never took trigonometry, so he never had to do these things. Plus, Virgil was, well, different. He couldn't tell you how he knew, nor what it was called, but something was wrong with Virgil.

A few seconds passed. " Hey, dad."

" Yeah?" Patton immediately snapped out of his own train of thought and regarded Virgil. He notices that the younger boy looked nervous but when Patton stepped out of the kitchen to help him, Virgil waved him away.

" Thanks. For the dinner. " Virgil ducked his head down, shoving his chin into the hoodie sleeve tucked over his paw. He really wanted to make his dad proud.

Patton and Virgil both knew he wasn't actually talking about chicken.

Patton smiled when he saw his son so happy. It was rare to see Virgil like that, especially when he was frustrated. Patton could remember when Virgil started kindergarten and couldn't read even though everyone else in his class could. How Patton helped him learn at his own pace. And then how Patton had to watch his only son struggle to understand basic arithmetic. One of the biggest things Patton could remember was playing Monopoly with Virgil when he was ten and Virgil having to count out each dot on the dice instead if just knowing how many spots to move by looking at the dice. And how frustrated Virgil got when Patton could just know without any of that effort.

After about thirty minutes, Virgil started packing his stuff back up, ready to leave. Patton stopped him, saying that they should review his work before he went to bed. That way, Patton knew that Virgil actually understood it and wasn't just peeking at the answers in the back of the book.

Virgil stopped in the middle of taking his book back out. " Dad, I think something is wrong with me. " He rushed the words out, barely breathing in between.

Patton nodded. He had a feeling he knew what Virgil was going to say. " I want to go to a doctor. Math shouldn't be this hard. I shouldn't have to spend five or six hours on a couple of worksheets that Logan could do in a few minutes. "

Patton smiled a bit at the mention of Virgil's boyfriend. He liked the kid, but not how dumb he sometimes made Virgil feel, just by existing.

Virgil kept going. " And I shouldn't be completely lost in the middle of a simple lesson. It shouldn't take me so much effort to know how much a cheeseburger at Wendy's would be if you added tax or a burger plus fries. I don't know why I feel so stupid." As he finished talking, Virgil shoved his head down, staring at his half open backpack. He went to say something else but closed his mouth before saying anything.

Patton put his hand on his son's back. " Virge, it's okay. I think it's time to see someone though. I'm sorry you feel like this. I'm sorry I can't teach you any more like I used to. "

Virgil stiffened under his dad's touch but slowly started to lean into it as he listened.

The rest of the night was even longer. There was some crying.

But there was even more crying two weeks later when Virgil had his IEP approved by the school. The one saying that he was mildly dyslexic and had severe dyscalculia. The same form that gave him a peer tutor in math and English and extra time to do his work.

But this time, they were happy tears.

You better comment nice things about my gf's wonderful writing guys I will physically fight you otherwise ('̀-'́)

Lmao anyways both me and Sammi had the idea to write things for each other's books and post them on our accounts. So she wrote this one for my oneshots book, and I'm going to be writing something soon for her account! We'll be posting her other two that she wrote and my own that I'm going to write in here and on her account around New Years so you should definitely be looking at her account and then you'll be able to see that along with her own amazing writing. So, basically just go read my girlfriends stuff she deserves so much more attention and followers and that's not just from my viewpoint of dating her, she's genuinely just a fantastic writer who's worked very hard and deserves more attention. You should also read both of our ramble/randomness books to see more of us talking about each other lmao.

Anyways, thanks for reading this! Say hi to Sammi, she'll be reading your comments too, and let her know if you want a second part to this!! She has an idea and would be happy to write it if you'd like her to. Definitely tell her what you think. *Sammi and I deliver you a ringpop* take care of yourselves!! Bye!-Bob
