Prisoners (Prince x Anxiety)

Prompt. SUPERHERO AU, CAUSE I'VE BEEN WANTING TO WRITE ONE FOR FUCKING EVER it doesn't really focus on their powers a whole lot tho, so ahhh sorry. I still really like it tho

Virgil sighed, tapping his fingers anxiously on his knee that was drawn up close to his chest, head resting on them. He kept his eyes on the floor he sat on, thinking, and wondering if he would ever get out of this awful prison cell.

It was unlikely. Virgil had spent most of his life with the people who ran this place. They made it seem like he simply worked for them, but in reality he was simply another prisoner, just one that happened to be useful. How else were they supposed to keep other people with powers locked away? Without him, they would escape in no time.

Virgil sighed again, tapping faster as he once again wondered why he couldn't have been born with some other power. Of all the things he could have been born with that might have helped him out of this situation, Virgil had gotten one of the most useless powers in existence. What good was it to suppress other people's powers if it was the very people who were born without them that held him there?

Virgil stopped his tapping immediately as he heard faint shouts outside of his cell door. He sat up, watching the door and wondering who it was. The shouting got closer and closer, until he could just barely make out what was being said.

"Let... go! ...friends will... soon..." He barely made out parts of sentences, and as the voice drew closer still he could feel the other's power. He must have been very strong. Virgil wondered how they had captured him.

Virgil flinched, curling up even more in his corner as the door was flung open. Another man his age was shoved inside, falling to the floor. It only took a moment before he was up on his feet again, the door slamming shut just before he could get out. Virgil could tell he was trying to use his power, and wondered what his power was.

Virgil jumped again as the other man resorted to banging on the metal door, screaming as loud as possible to be let out. Virgil tried to hide a frightened whimper, only realizing he had failed when the other stopped banging on the door and whirled around to face him. He curled in on himself even more, making himself small as the other prisoner shot him a dark glare.

"You!" He hissed, taking a step closer to him and making Virgil flinch once again. "You're the reason I'm not able to use my powers!"

"Please don't hurt me..." The cornered prisoner begged, sniffling and keeping his head down to hide his tear-filled eyes. "I can't help it..."

"Sure you can't. You work with them!" The other argued, slamming his fist against the cell wall in anger. Virgil didn't say anything, trying to keep his terrified sobs as silent as possible. He knew this other prisoner had to be one of the good guys, but that didn't mean he wouldn't cause Virgil any harm. He was locked up, with no way to escape or use his powers, and he was angry. Virgil, the weak and tiny man in the corner with no real defense was the perfect thing to take that anger out on.

Hours passed before the other finally stopped shouting and banging against the walls. He had not caused Virgil any harm, despite very obviously being angry. Virgil was definitely surprised at this, especially because he was positive that a lot of the other prisoners anger was directed to him.

He watched out of the corner of his eye as the other paced around the small room, eventually huffing and sitting down in the corner as far away from Virgil as he could get. He glared in Virgil's direction, and Virgil turned away from him even more, not wanting to anger him any more.

****

Days passed by like this, exactly the same. The new prisoner would get angry, he would scream and bang against their cell door, and any time he had to look over at Virgil he was glaring. Eventually he would get tired, sit in the opposite corner, and mutter to himself. Virgil never said or did anything, he didn't want to make him even angrier and risk being beat up. He knew that if the other did try to do something to him, no one outside would stop him unless he got close to killing him.

Today, however, there was no angry screaming. There was no loud sound of fists hitting the door, no pacing around. The other prisoner stayed silent, and unmoving. He didn't glare at Virgil, which was another thing he often did when he wasn't screaming and hitting things. He stared at the ground, and he did nothing.

Virgil hated the silence. Sure, he also hated the screaming, but the silence just reminded him of how alone he always was. So, Virgil did something he never thought he would. He spoke to the other prisoner.

"What's your name?" He croaked, unsure of when the last time he had used his voice was. The other prisoner snapped his head up to look at Virgil, not expecting him to talk. He stared for a minute, examining him. Just as Virgil thought he wasn't going to answer, he heard a reply.

"Roman." He told Virgil, who was beginning to feel uncomfortable as Roman still stared at him. He supposed this was better than the constant glaring and screaming, though. "And you are?"

"Virgil.." He answered hesitantly, looking down at the floor in front of him. "Wh-why... why did they capture you?" He finally got out the question that he had been wondering about ever since Roman got placed in here. Roman frowned.

"Why do you think?" He snapped, not noticing as Virgil curled into himself even more at his anger. "What's the one reason these guys would capture and bring me here? They're horrible people. They're trying to stop us from doing what's right."

His voice kept getting louder as he went on, anger slowly coming back. It went away immediately as he heard a sniffle in the opposite corner of the cell. He stayed silent, finally taking notice of how much his anger affected Virgil. He took a breath, calming himself down before talking again.

"Why are you stuck in here...?" He asked, keeping his voice much softer than before. Virgil didn't look up at him again, but he seemed to relax the slightest bit.

"I've been here for a long time." He shrugged, voice so quiet Roman almost didn't hear him. "I'm useful to them. So they keep me here."

"You keep people from using their powers, right?" Roman asked, looking around the room carefully before moving to sit closer to Virgil. "Is... is there any way you can stop it? Can you let me use my powers?"

"I-I don't know," Virgil pressed himself into the wall, not liking how close Roman was even if there was still plenty of room between them. "I-I've never t-tried. I'm sorry."

Roman frowned again, watching Virgil's reaction. He very carefully inched closer, feeling bad when he let out a small whimper and backed even further away. He moved away again, muttering. "Hey... it's okay. I'm not... I'm not gonna hurt you or anything, if that's what you think. I wouldn't do that..."

"I don't know that..." Virgil whispered harshly, not looking at Roman. "Just stay away... please..."

"Okay." Roman agreed, going back to his corner without argument. Virgil didn't relax immediately, and Roman could hear him drawing in shaky breaths. After a few minutes of silence Virgil finally seemed to calm down a little bit more, still staying against the wall but not nearly as tense as before.

"Sorry," he mumbled again.

"I should be the one apologizing. I did not mean to scare you." Roman replied, shaking his head. Virgil just shrugged, and neither of them spoke very much for the rest of the day.

A few more days has passed by, making it a little over a week since Roman had been captured and kept in Virgil's prison cell, and the two had spoke a lot more since their first conversation. Virgil found out that Roman's power was telekinesis, and found out that his friends names were Patton and Logan. Both of them had powers of their own, and Roman had no doubt in his mind that the two of them would rescue him.

"Logan, the smart one, he'll figure out a way to get in here and get me out." Roman had told Virgil. "Anytime now. They'll be here. I just have to be patient..."

Guilt ate away at Virgil as he wished that they wouldn't get there any time soon.

****

Virgil was startled awake very suddenly by shouts coming from down the hall. For a moment he remembered the day that Roman had been brought in and wondered if there was a new prisoner, but there were too many people shouting for it to be one new prisoner.

He looked over to find Roman still sleeping through the noise, and frowned. "Roman." He hissed, trying to wake him up. "Roman, get up!"

Roman didn't move and Virgil looked around, wondering what to do. As the shouting got louder Virgil didn't see any other way to wake him up, so he got up from his spot in the corner for the first time since Roman had arrived, slowly inching over to him and shaking him awake. "Get up! There's people coming."

Roman jumped up immediately, looking to the door as he heard the sounds outside. "Virgil! What if it's them? They've come to get me out!"

Virgil really hoped that wasn't the case, and hated himself for thinking that way. "I don't know," he muttered, surprised that he wasn't feeling nervous any more, being this close to Roman. "I can't feel anyone else's power nearby. I don't know what's happening."

"It has to be them!" Roman insisted, standing up and making his way to the door. Virgil followed him, legs feeling like jelly. "Maybe they're just not close enough yet."

Virgil tapped his fingers against his side nervously, watching as Roman pressed his ear against the door to hear better. Virgil stepped up right behind him, listening in as well. The shouting that had previously been increasing in volume had now stopped completely. Just as he was wondering what had caused this his stomach dropped as he realized he could sense someone else nearby.

Roman's friends were really there to save him.

Virgil stayed quiet about this as he heard Roman's confused whispers, hoping that they might not find him and that he would stay there instead. He knew it was an awful thing to hope for, knew he should want Roman to be able to be free again, but he didn't. He couldn't be alone again. He couldn't.

There were footsteps getting closer and closer to the door that Roman and Virgil were listening out of, and Virgil already knew exactly who it was. He took a few steps away from the door, using the wall behind him to hold himself up as his legs wanted to give out on him. Roman glanced back at him worriedly, and was going to ask him if he was okay before he heard the door opening, and turned back to see what was happening.

In front of the open door stood two men Virgil had never seen before, still knowing exactly who they were. He watched as one of them smiled widely, throwing his arms around Roman immediately and exclaiming how happy he was that Roman was safe and that they had found him. Virgil wondered who he was to Roman, feeling jealousy eat away at him along with his guilt.

The man behind the one hugging Roman had a small hint of a smile on his face, but after looking over Roman to make sure he was okay began to examine the room he had been locked away in. His eyes landed on Virgil, who backed into the wall and made himself smaller, just as he had done before getting to know Roman. He wondered if this other man would say anything about Virgil, but he just looked back to Roman and the other more excited man.

"We need to leave quickly." He told them, Roman nodding as he pulled back from the hug. He started to walk ahead of them, the other man following behind him and Roman in last. Virgil stayed still, tears threatening to fall as he watched him go.

Then Roman paused, turning to look at Virgil and raising an eyebrow. "Aren't you coming?"

Virgil stared at him, obviously confused. "Wh-what..?" He stuttered out.

"You don't like it here either, right? Come with us. I know for a fact Logan and Patton wouldn't mind helping you get out. You can stay with us. Unless... you have somewhere else you want to go." Virgil couldn't help but think Roman sounded slightly disappointed at his last sentence.

"I don't... have anywhere else. You're the only person I know outside of this place." Virgil mumbled, looking away. Roman brightened up immediately.

"Then come with us!" He insisted, holding out his hand for Virgil to take. Patton and Logan showed up once again behind him as they had realized he stayed back. "We would love to have you as part of our team. If... if that's what you want, at least."

Virgil didn't say anything at first, glancing behind Roman at the other two. They both shared a look, then turned back to Virgil. The one that had hugged Roman was grinning over at him, and the man beside him nodded his head. Virgil felt a tiny smile grow on his face for the first time in a long time, and he slowly nodded.

"Okay," he agreed. Without saying another word he placed his hand in Roman's.

He was finally free.
