No Longer Alone (Morality x Anxiety)
Warning: a lot of death and a funeral (don't worry this isn't a super sad oneshot I swear-)
I literally started this oneshot back when I was in Florida months ago, I'm so unmotivated rn oh my god-
Virgil watched the cars pulling in to the driveway, standing up and making his way over to the building to see what was going on. He watched a few people getting out, going around to the back of one of the cars and carrying something out. He frowned, realizing what was going on almost immediately.
Virgil waited for a while, finally seeing another person show up. He squinted, trying to get a better look at them from where he was. It was a man, and he was wearing a blue shirt, but that was all he could make out. He watched him talk to the other people there, going from one person to the next. Virgil knew they would just ignore him though. They couldn't hear or see him like he could.
He continued to watch from afar, even as everyone went inside. More cars had filled the driveway by then. It took a while before Virgil finally saw the man in the blue shirt again. This time, instead of talking to anyone, he simply followed them closer to where Virgil had been waiting for them.
Only when they began to lower the casket into the ground did Virgil finally step up. He saw the man look at him out of the corner of his eye, and turned to face him. The man seemed startled, opening his mouth to speak and then closing it again.
"I... can you see me?" He wondered, and Virgil nodded.
"I can. I'm guessing you've already figured out what's going on?" He asked, gesturing to the casket. The man stayed quiet for a moment, looking over at it and frowning. Virgil could tell he was fighting back tears, and felt bad for him. He should probably be used to this by now, but he wasn't.
"Yeah," the man choked out, squeezing his eyes shut to keep the tears from escaping. "I... I don't understand how you can see me though. No one else can. Who are you?"
"My name is Virgil." He answered, knowing that didn't answer any questions he had. He glanced at the headstone above the grave his casket had been lowered into. "And yours is Patton?"
"Yeah," he nodded, looking back over at the grave as well. This time he couldn't stop himself from letting a few tears fall. "So I'm... I'm dead... and you're the only one here who can see me. What's going on? How did this happen?"
"You don't remember?" Virgil frowned.
"No-I... I remember that, unfortunately. I meant... I'm kind of like a ghost now, right? Or what?" Patton looked at Virgil, hoping he would answer his questions.
"Yeah. You're a ghost." Virgil nodded.
"So... we're in a cemetery," Patton glanced around. "But I don't see any other ghosts here. Why?"
"They moved on. Y'know like... went to the afterlife. People don't just stay as ghosts forever."
"Oh. Then why are you here?" Patton wondered, and Virgil winced.
"Well, I..." he paused, sighing. "I sort of help new people cross over."
"So, sort of like the grim reaper or something?" Patton asked, and Virgil shook his head.
"Not exactly..." he mumbled. "I was just like you, actually. I died, then got buried here."
Patton frowned again. He looked around, wondering what grave might belong to Virgil. "Why are you still here?"
"I was the first." He answered, not looking at Patton while he talked. "The first person buried in a graveyard is supposed to help other spirits move on, and protect them from evil spirits. That's me."
There was silence for a while between the two of them, Virgil staying quiet. He had done this plenty of times before, and he knew he needed to be patient. It took some time for people to process everything.
"Isn't that... lonely?" Patton spoke at last. "I mean, you stay here for so long helping people... but this isn't a very big graveyard or anything. You don't have many people who come here. And you only see them to explain things and then they leave..." Patton trailed off, looking back up to Virgil. Virgil still wasn't meeting his eyes. "Doesn't it bother you?"
"I..." Virgil frowned. That certainly wasn't the answer he had been expecting. Not one of the people he had helped cross over before had ever thought of him before. They typically didn't care anything about him. He finally spoke in a quiet voice, looking up at Patton. "It is... a little lonely. But it's... it's my job."
"That sounds unfair to me." Patton said, and Virgil watched him curiously. "Does... does no one ever consider not crossing over?"
"Sometimes they don't." Virgil shrugged. "But they don't stay here. Normally they have some unfinished business or whatever. A person they don't want to leave behind, stuff like that. I don't really understand that personally... if I could leave this place, I'd do it in a heartbeat."
"Do you know where they go?" Patton asked. "When they do leave, I mean."
"Heaven, Hell." Virgil shrugged again. "I don't know what happens. It could be nothing."
"Oh." Patton frowned, looking at the ground. It was quiet for a while again. Eventually as the pair were silent the funeral ended, and people were leaving. Patton watched them all go, crying again and mumbling a few quiet goodbyes to people. Virgil put a hand on his shoulder comfortingly, and Patton smiled appreciatively at him as more tears slipped from his eyes.
"Patton... I know you need time, and you can have as much time as you'd like, but you do need to make a decision at some point." Virgil pointed out, and Patton nodded.
"I know..." he muttered, closing his eyes. "I know I do. I... just a few more minutes, please."
"I can leave you alone for a while, if you want." Virgil offered.
"I.. yes, I would like to be alone for a while. I just... need to think." He mumbled, wiping at his eyes.
Virgil nodded, not saying anything else as he walked away from him. He wound his way through the headstones until he got to a specific grave, one that was old and broken, with vines covering up most of the name on it. He sat down in front of this one, leaning back against it and sighing. He stayed there for a while, left to his thoughts once again.
He should be used to being alone by now, and yet here he was. Wishing that for once, someone actually cared. That they wouldn't want to leave him. That was silly, wasn't it? They didn't know him. Why should they care about him? He was just doing his job. He had to do his job.
After some time Virgil heard someone clear their throat above him, looking up and finding Patton standing there. He saw Patton glance behind him, and pointed at the headstone. "Is... is this yours..?"
"Yeah," Virgil nodded, turning to glance back at it. "It's weird... After all this time I still don't know how I feel about it. I'm kind of stuck here with it... but it's also a constant reminder of... you know."
"What happened to you?" Patton asked, sitting down in front of Virgil. "I-if you don't mind me asking, at least."
"It... doesn't matter." Virgil mumbled, looking back at Patton. "Have you made a decision?"
"I think so, yeah." Patton smiled a little, confusing Virgil. No one was ever happy to make this decision. "But I should ask first... do you want someone to stay? With you, here."
"Do I... what?" Virgil asked, frowning. "I-I mean... yes, hell yes, who wants to be alone? But... why? Why does that matter? It... who's going to stay here for me? No one... no one knows me."
"I'd stay." Patton smiled, reaching out to put a hand over Virgil's. "If you'd want me to, anyways."
"I..." Virgil gaped at Patton, sitting in silence for a few moments. Slowly tears started to fall from his eyes, and he quickly pulled his hand from Patton's to swipe at them. Patton moved forward to hug him, wrapping his arms around him and holding him close. No one had held Virgil like that in... god, he didn't know how long, he forgot how nice it felt. He threw his arms back around Patton, sobbing into his shoulder. "Why... why would you that? Why would you do anything for me?"
"Why shouldn't I?" Patton asked, rubbing his back comfortingly. "I don't have anyone waiting for me if I leave, and I don't have a reason to stay anywhere else. You don't deserve to be left alone here forever. Why not stay?"
"You barely even know me!" Virgil cried, pulling back from the hug to look Patton in the eyes. "What if-what if you hate me! What if you get tired of being here too? It doesn't... this doesn't make any sense, I..."
"Virgil," Patton spoke firmly, hands on Virgil's shoulders. "I want to."
The two of them stared at each other in silence, Virgil silently searching Patton's eyes for any hesitance from him. He was even more confused and shocked to see that Patton wasn't even a little uncertain. He seemed determined to stay and be with Virgil. Virgil didn't think he would ever understand why, but he decided it was best not to question it anymore.
"Thank you..." Virgil gasped out, tears still trailing down his cheeks quickly. He threw his arms around Patton again, holding him close while he cried. "Thank you."
As time passed by, none of Virgil's worries ever came to pass. Patton got along with Virgil amazingly-he loved him, actually, and Virgil loved him as well. With each other the two never seemed to get bored, and Patton never once regretted his decision to stay. He never thought that death could be this happy, and yet with Virgil he could almost never be sad.
Virgil was the happiest he had ever been, knowing now that he no longer had to be alone.
This is kinda what this is based on lol except there really is a human buried instead of a dog.
I know I have unfinished drafts and also a request and a part two of the last oneshot to finish, but I also have an idea for a second part to this that I may write if people like it. I'd like to write one, and I was actually going to just make this one longer but also I needed to get something done tonight and this is months old so I figured it'd be easiest to just go with the shorter version of this and upload it now. But let me know if you're interested-I do wanna write it.
I'm gonna try and get this request I have done tonight, so I may upload again with that but I also don't know. It's late, I'm tired, and..... it's a long oneshot lol. I'll try my best though.
I also want to say that I'm going to take a break from Wattpad for a bit after Thursday. I'll try and keep updating till then, but after that we're going on a trip to Florida and going to my cousins wedding. Yay.
So yeah, I won't be uploading any of my books while I'm there and possibly longer. We're also in the process of moving, so that is difficult and stressful and I don't have a lot of time so sorry.
Anyways, I'm going to leave this here now. I hope you enjoyed it, thank you for reading. *
* that sounds amazing haha. Thanks for the suggestion. Take care of yourselves!!!! I love you guys. Bye!-Bob
