Whiskey Lullaby
TRIGGER WARNING: Alcohol, suicide, death, cheating, lemme know if I missed any
This one is shorter but i love it. The song is Whiskey Lullaby by Brad Paisley and Allison Krauss
Whiskey Lullaby
She put him out. Like the burning end of a midnight cigarette.
Virgil and Roman had been happy...until Roman cheated. Virgil couldn't take it, couldn't trust him.
He broke it off the next day, unable to take it.
She broke his heart. He spent his whole life trying to forget.
We watched him drink his pain away a little at a time
But he never could get drunk enough to get her off his mind.
Roman took to drinking. He knew he'd messed up. Virgil never would give him another chance. He never forgave himself, never forgot Virgil either. He kept a picture of the other in his wallet, no matter who he dated.
Until the night.
He put that bottle to his head and pulled the trigger
And finally drank away her memory
Life is short, but this time it was bigger
Than the strength he had to get up off his knees
Roman had enough. One night, he just drank pretty much everything in his house. Whiskey, tequilla, beer. It didn't matter. Nothing was enough and he passed out on his couch.
We found him with his face down in the pillow
With a note that said, 'I'll love her till I die.'
Patton had gone to check on his friend. He knew he was in bad shape, but not answering for two days? That wasn't like Roman, no matter what. Not ever. He knocked. "Kiddo? You in there?" He knew where the spare key was so he grabbed it, opening the door.
He stepped in, nose burning at the smell of alcohol. He took a couple steps. "Roman?" Patton looked in the living room, eyes going wide as he teared up. Roman was on the couch, clutching a note. He resd it, sobbing as he did.
And when we buried him beneath the willow
The angels sang a whiskey lullaby
Everyone attended. Well, Roman's close friends. Logan, Patton, Thomas, Damien, his brother Remus. And finally, Virgil was there.
The rumors flew but nobody knew how much she blamed herself
For years and years she tried to hide the whiskey on her breath
He was in horrible shape. The younger boy had never gotten over Roman, constantly thinking of him. Every morning, every night.
She finally drank her pain away a little at a time
But she never could get drunk enough to get him off her mind
Virgil decided to do as Roman did. He told himself he deserved it for making Roman go that way. He tried getting help...but drinking and forgetting just...he couldn't describe it. It hurt when he remembered, so Virgil drank until he couldn't even remember his own name.
Until the night
She put that bottle to her head and pulled the trigger
And finally drank away his memory
Life is short, but this time it was bigger
Than the strength she had to get up off her knees
Logan made his way to Virgil's house. He was going to confront him about his obvious drinking problem. He hadn't when Roman had one, something he immensely regretted.
"Virgil?" Logan opened the door slowly, frowning. Strange that it was unlocked. He looked around, heart clenching at the sight before him as a hand flew to his mouth.
We found her with her face down in the pillow
Clinging to his picture for dear life
Virgil was on his back on the couch, one arm hanging off. There was a broken bottle on the floor. His other hand was clutching a photo. It was him and Roman, when they first got together. Both were smiling, Virgil in Roman's lap.
Logan immediately called Patton, unable to contain the sobs that racked his figure.
We laid her next to him beneath the willow
While the angels sang a whiskey lullaby
Everyone that was at Roman's funeral was at Virgil's. They placed him in the ground next to Roman, something both of them had planned who they were together. One last goodbye, one last lullaby. One last Whiskey Lullaby.
